Hawks v Wichita State

With their 4-year starting All American PG out, we have little excuse for not winning this one. In terms of strength of schedule, you have to win games for it to have its biggest impact & we have whiffed on all of that. Not playing anyone at all away from home (not on a neutral) before playing these tourney games is a detriment to these tourney games as well as our road B10 games. I absolutely hate Fran's non-conference philosophy.

Woody playing well on both ends of the court. Hopefully the carryover from the 2nd half of ND will continue moving forward! Iowa up 21-9..

This team is gong to make me tear my hair out. Up 12 and feels like they could be up more! Some really smart defensive plays but offense feels stalted. Or hot / cold. Or something. Doesn't look pretty but it's working this game!

23-11 at under 8 timeout. Iowa defensively has been very active. You can tell Wichita State really misses both VanVleet and Grady today...

Glad to see short memory from the Hawks, these early season tourneys can test a teams maturity. Iowa seems ready to play each night following close losses so far. That's a great sign for later in the year. Hard to get maximum in season improvement if each loss takes a whole 2nd game of focus away from you.

Wow... great time to get Wichita State... forgot that Connor Frankamp transferred there, as well. Once they get their pieces back, they will be a force in the MVC.

of course the half court shot falls for them after our last 2 good looks go in and out.

Gotta give som3 credit to our defense. Especially what we've done to Baker. (Is that allowed? To point out something good? :))

Also, Woody has had a good tourney.

I agree - was worried about the intensity level for an early morning 7th place game, but the defense has been very active. They showed a stat that Baker has basically doubled his production in the 2nd half of each game in Orlando so need to stay dialed in. This is a win that will look much, much better in March because with VanVleet, Frankamp and Grady back, WSU is going to be tough to beat in conference.

I will be surprised if Woody averages over 10pts per game this season given his tendency to miss layups. He certainly has played well recently. Has the light gone on? I'm not a believer yet in Woody as scorer, but if he does, wouldn't be the 1st time a Big man puts together a good senior year and make a big difference for his team.

If one looks at his stats, those missed bunnies are more memorable than frequent.

1-2 obviously wasn't the goal, but knowing we played Dayton, ND and Wichita State; makes it much more understandable. There have definitely been some positives and negatives, but given Fran's history, I'm sticking to the positive side. Going into this tournament, those were the teams I really wanted to play (I would have taken either Wichita State or Xavier in our 3rd game). I think this is the type of non-conference Hawk fans should want to see. Let's challenge ourselves every year (like Michigan State, Kansas, Kentucky tend to do). We shouldn't fear playing anyone and should look to learn from these games to better prepare ourselves for a tough B1G schedule. The only risk is really over-extending your team and burning out prior to the end of the season. I don't think we'll ever get to that level of scheduling in the near future, so I'm not at all worried about it (plus, half our team is underclassmen, and they are too young to get tired or so the saying goes...)

Does one player make that big a difference for Wichita State or are they a bit overrated?

I thought they were highly overrated coming into the season, but to a mid major, 1 player can be everything. They also have another guy who went down. I think they would have taken 2 with him, but God they look awful.

If Woody doesn't average 10 points than it is 90% the fault of Gesell & Sapp. Most games he does not get the ball enough to score 10 points. Gesell misses way more layups that Woody has layup opportunities.
