HBOT posters over age 50: Is this the craziest time period you’ve lived through?

Regarding the 3rd, people keep saying this but I'm not sure how true it is. Breaking Bad, Stranger Things, a few others seem to be shows that are at least as popular as the most popular shows when I was a kid.
.
When Art and I grew up, there were only 3 choices abc, nbc, and cbs. No one had cable. It's true we all had the same cultural experience and watched basically the same news casts. Today it's too easy to only consume information based on your bias.

Yeah, when I was a kid there might be 40 million people all watching Bewitched at the same time. The biggest hit in the last decade maybe had 10 million watching.

50 million Americans all watched Billie Jean King vs Bobby Riggs. 85 millions watched the 68 Democratic Convention. Tens of millions of American all experiencing the same cultural events together, night after night, week after week.

Having a President without a brain for past 4 years was crazy.

What's even worse is Jill and the interns were running the White House. Some of the interns even tried to forgive some of their own student debt.
Please stop logging in to your russian computer.

It might be the craziest time in my lifetime, but anyone that thinks the political climate and political violence are worse than the 60s/early 70s era is off their rocker.

I think maybe it was fairly easy to be removed from it in that era... simply don't turn on the news at 6 and don't read the paper. But it's insane to compare the two eras in terms of political conflict, and you sound stupid if you do.

Let's try on for size, 1960-1975:

- 71 Airplane Hiijackings, 26 involving American flights. The majority (but not all) of those where political.
- 13 politically motivated assassinations in the US alone
- 2000 political bombings in the United States with hundreds dead or injured
- 300+ Race riots in American cities
- Multiple murderous domestic terror organizations operating, including the Symbionese Liberation Army (8 murders), Ku Klux Klan (at LEAST 10 murders), Jewish Defense League (probably several murders).

Which is to say nothing of the US literally being at war, as well as in the Cold War.

January 6 was a disgrace. George Floyd riots were bad. But the level of crazy conflict news that was happening on literally a daily basis in the 1960s and 1970s is insane, and not remotely comparable to today.

The question is, which era was crazier. The 60's and 70's were more profound. Today is more crazy.

Really? I don't know about that at all.

I was talking to my Mom (no pics) who is 75 years old and my Aunt (no pics) this weekend and they both said the last 5 years with covid/Trump/Ukraine/Israel wars are unlike anything they have lived through.

My Mom said the Vietnam era wasn't close to as crazy as the times we live in today.

What's been your experience?
It has been crazy lately. But I would say Vietnam and the Iraq/Afghan wars after the first couple years where they got bad were really bad as far as US direct involvement, death and maiming of US soldiers, etc.

But #1, none of us ever thought we would see a Prez lie and try to overturn an election and push for Jan 6 insurrection. That is the most definite outlier to me. We have had very tough times with tuberculosis and polio taking and maiming people so a Covid thing is similar.

But the rule of law has just been erased when trump can do it and so many crappy people have come out of the woodwork. I lived during other Israeli wars against middle east countries so that is like a decade type thing

Underrated point here. We're tearing ourselves apart over mostly low meaning items.

It's been hilarious to see people take the attitude that everything is going to change now that Trump is back in power.

We're completely overvaluing the effect that federal politics has on our day to day lives. (including the economy)

And we're doing so on the basis of hating the other team on what are mostly culture war issues. It's really silly.
Those culture objectives definitely changed under biden. And they changed very quickly. Biden ushered in dei and trans. So it did matter that he was president.

Trump has already made an effort to eradicate these 2 items and I have no doubt it will continue under his leadership.

Dei affected nearly everyone in the working world. Did you have to do diversity training in your job? That was from biden. Don't underestimate how much of a negative impact biden had on all of us.

I think Covid and everything around it broke a lot of people mentally. Some of the manifestations take longer to play out than others. But a lot of people are permanently altered.

The federal government didn't have much to do with the spread of "DEI"

Liberal institutions, like certain progressive Universities, were the biggest sources. It then started migrating to the business world. Although it's been fading for a while before Trump came onto the scene.

No, going to "diversity training" was not some Biden inspired thing.

Some of this sort of training existed before "DEI".

And most of it didn't matter much one way or another. Moreso just a waste of time.

Keep whining...
Case in point. Art offers multiple thoughtful posts on what he views as the negative direction the country is heading, and instead of having a discussion about how you might disagree, you taunt him for 'whining." Not that I'd expect you to have a cogent response, but this is the behavior of an unserious person and a terrible citizen of our shared country.

Old enough to remember sort of the oil crisis and recession of 73/74 with the close of Vietnam. US and Soviets on the brink. Mayaguez. Early 80s in Iowa on a farm. Major economic crisis in early 80s. Soviets and Cubans seemed to be rolling. SLA. Turmoil in Europe. Swine flu scar.

That seemed worse. I think the 60s were pretty bad in a lot of ways.

I have long blamed Rush Limbaugh for a lot of this. He created the Sean Hannity's and others, and he created the culture of hate on the Right. He opened the door for outlets like FOX; because while many complain that MSM is "biased" FOX decided to be full-blown agenda driven, and there is a big difference.

And, btw, the death of newspapers has contributed greatly to this.

I believe you are spot on with Limbaugh IMO, He brought divisiveness mainstream and he was on the radio everywhere. He was a driving force in making hating your enemies popular.

The death of newspapers may big the biggest contributor. Minimal sensationalization.

I would just change this a little bit. Before Limbaugh, political parties were rivals not enemies. We've gone from disagreeing on policy and visions for the future to viewing the other side as evil.

True. It's brutal.

I'm trying to not debate politics with people...it just divides and accomplishes nothing.

You are talking about ARGUING.

For starters, the DRAFT.

Your 18 year old is living at home and next thing you know he's in a jungle across the world fighting in a war.

2.2m MILLION were drafted. MILLION.

58k or so didn't make it back home. Many missing. Many wounded. Many with severe PTSD. Haven't had a war this bad since.

You had way more protests during the time.

Kent State?

Jackson State?

I could keep going but I'm too busy at work. LOL
58 and somewhat remember the nam era. I'm going to say your right, shit was tense then. Lots of pissed off.

Not even close. Get some perspective for real. Early 70s there we thousands of bombings a year around the country.

Well that part is unfair. I think many were like me in 2017; we viewed Trump as an unserious clown, but were optimistic that when he actually won he would comprehend the gravity of the position and rise to the occasion. Certainly we didn't expect him to be the President we wanted, but we expected he would listen to the experts and treat the Presidency seriously. Unfortunately, he did not.

But when he lost in 2020 he went to a completely different level. People try to downplay it, but he absolutely tried to overturn the results of our election - and convinced millions of otherwise good Americans that it should happen. He caused the assault on our Capitol, and now he has pardoned those who tried to violently upend our government. He now is completely consumed with vengeance, and it colors his every move.

There comes a point where there can be no forgiveness. He didn't just cross that line; he sprinted past it while flipping it off. It no longer matters what stances he may take or what policy he may try to enact - it all pales to the vulgarity and the threat to Democracy. He does not deserve to be treated with an open-mind.
Wow…I don’t know how to respond to someone that far left? 😳

Good point. With fewer TV channel options & news outlets…everyone (regardless of politics) could discuss similar topics around the “water cooler” at work. I recall when the last episode of M.A.S.H. was run…it was a huge deal. 😉

Don't remember that. A bombing sure, but wide scale no.

I’m 50.
Craziest times ever:
1- 2020 COVID
2- 9/11 and aftermath
3- Trump winning in 2016 and the few months after.

I am not quite as old as your mother, but I do not think this is the craziest time in the last 70 years.

I do think the ability to communicate everyone's personal craziness makes it seem that way though.

I've had corporate diversity training going back to the late 90s.

How did Biden "usher in trans"? They existed prior to Biden and will always exist.

Correct, but you forgot PBS.

I'm sure I will get pasted for this but:
2 Timothy 3:1-5-"But know this, that in the last days critical times hard to deal with will be here. 2  For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, haughty, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, disloyal, 3  having no natural affection, not open to any agreement, slanderers, without self-control, fierce, without love of goodness, 4  betrayers, headstrong, puffed up with pride, lovers of pleasures rather than lovers of God, 5  having an appearance of godliness but proving false to its power;

2 Timothy 3:13-"But wicked men and impostors will advance from bad to worse, misleading and being misled.

You may argue but it's hard to disagree with alot of those personality traits we see in the world today.

I don't think the traits listed above are unique to today's world. That type of behavior has been going on for thousands of years.

Kudos to you on the use of scripture!
