Wrong. A system in which a single vote in each of 12 states can determine the election over potentially 10s of millions of voters is not one that encourages unity. How is it that a candidate potentially receiving ~23% of the popular vote, yet still winning, is a good idea?
The electoral college actually discourages participation as voters are considered differently simply based on the state in which they live. It's just as likely that more conservative voters in California and New York would participate if each and every vote was counted equally.
Explain to me why a vote in Wyoming should be considered 3.6x a vote in California (assuming 100% voter participation). Explain to me how this promotes national unity in selecting the president.
The electoral college served a purpose at one time. However, it's no longer relevant and only encourages campaigning in a few key states. Eliminating the electoral college would increase voter participation and encourage candidates to visit more states.
