home fire pits

I love the smell of wood smoke. We have a metal "fire pit" we bought years ago that is still in the box. Sounds like it is time to finally put it together.

I've been trying to figure out the best place to put a stone fire pit in my backyard for the past five or so years. Id like to put it right off the patio as our yard isnt large and the kids still play ball games in the back. I cant figure out how to make a round pit look decent next to a square concrete patio.

Just make it a half circle and connect it to the edge of your patio as long as it's far enough away from your house. There are some cool designs out there.

We fired ours up. Put it on the front patio. Had some friends stop by. They sat in lawn chairs in the front yard, we stayed on the patio. The smoke kept the mosquitoes at bay.

My son has a round stone one in his back yard but it's getting past the time of year in Florida to use it. They love to fire it up come November and it's in the 50's at night.

why don’t you just make the fire pit square?

We had a little cool front come through last Thursday so did a bonfire Friday night. It's quite likely to be the last time until mid-late fall. Summers in central FL are not bonfire season.

I live in the country. Dug a small depression in the back yard and circled it with rock. Looks great and works like a charm.

I think they might be illegal here in Urbandale...not that folks don’t have them. But, I think fire pits are the “ leaf burning” of summertime...and IF you have breathing issues, asthma, COPD or the like...there is a good reason these pits are banned.
I know..I am just another liberal troublemaker.

pea gravel. I usually buy a bag each spring and sweep it in. Keeps it level for our chairs.
We have a fire table on our deck but I would love to add a fire pit. The problem is the place I would like to put it has a huge tree with branches too low... I'll probably just get a big metal one raised on legs and use it elsewhere...

I don't have one at home here in Atlanta, but I do have one at my place in south carolina. I've got a big iron grate and use it mostly for oyster roasts. Looks a little like this.

I have a fire pit about 15 feet from my hot tub.. I can drink in tub while watching a fire.. Easy way to relax.

Our fire pit looks a lot like this one. I just slap it on the cement pad out back, and when we're finished, just scoop it out and back into the garage until next time. I don't want to build a structure just to enjoy an outdoor fire now and then.

Trad, you are an ass.Smoke can kill folks with respiratory conditions. It has been proven to do so.,that’s why most places in civilization, you can’t burn leaves any more...or only under very restrictive conditions.

Next you'll be coming after my fireplace, my grill and my smoker. Piss off.

I understand the leaves as they put out all the smoke. I don't see the difference between a wood burning fireplace ( I have both ) and a fire pit, I guess. I'd prefer a neighbor with the occasional fire over the neighbor with a non stop yapping dog. That's why I live on an acreage, I guess...

Got some very nice dry elm from a buddy of mine on LeClaire. Slow burner and lots of BTUs. It’s amazing the difference quality firewood makes.
Had a friend who had some hickory trees cut down. He let me haul off a ton. Shit was hell to split but burns slow and hot. We can throw 2-3 logs in the fireplace and it'll burn for hours.
