Rep. Tom Emmer (R-Minn.), the House majority whip, was elected as the GOP speaker nominee on a fifth ballot in an internal race that drew nine Republican candidates. Emmer, who has been in Congress since 2015, previously chaired the National Republican Congressional Committee — the House GOP campaign arm — for four years. He is the third Republican speaker nominee since the ouster of Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.). It is not clear whether he has enough support to be elected on the House floor.

That's pretty great that those idiots actually nominated somebody that certified the election. Exhibiting minimal common sense is a good look.

Rep. Tom Emmer (R-Minn.), the House majority whip, was among the first to make clear his intention to run for speaker in the latest round.
Emmer has been in Congress since 2015 and has served as whip since the beginning of this Congress. Before that, he chaired the National Republican Congressional Committee — the Republicans’ House campaign arm — for four years. He is the highest-ranking Republican among the list of official candidates and is a member of the conservative Republican Study Committee.
Emmer, 62, has already received the support of former speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.). Speaking to “Meet the Press” on Sunday, McCarthy said Emmer is “head and shoulders above all those others who want to run.”
“We need to get him elected this week and move on,” McCarthy said.
And, as The Washington Post previously reported, some members of the group who plotted to oust McCarthy have also floated the idea of nominating Emmer for the job.
In a statement shared Saturday, Emmer — who supported both Reps. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and Steve Scalise (R-La.) in their failed efforts to become speaker — announced his intention to seek the gavel. He highlighted his work as chairman of the NRCC and the connections he has formed with Republican members as majority whip.
“If given the opportunity to be your Speaker, we will use that same culture of teamwork, communication, and respect to build on the movements that brought us success, learn from our mistakes, and keep fighting for each and every one of you and our Republican majority,” he said.
But right-wing outlets and allies of former president Donald Trump are urging Republicans not to elect Emmer, who voted to certify the results of the 2020 presidential election for Joe Biden.

The House going to vote today. Or should they take the rest of the week of to recuperate.

I don’t understand how anyone could find McCarthy unacceptable ideologically but would vote for this guy. I hope is is elected speaker, but whatever.
Kevin is more well known and demonized in the performance artist sphere. Thus opposing him was good for your brand. When u are anti establishment even the leaders of your own party are the enemy.

He's not a much better alternative to the other garbage humans who already have failed as nominees.

And he still doesn't have the votes. This is pointless. Rs keep picking new candidates. And the Rs keep rejecting them. The only real option I see is for five Rs to support Jeffries. He's certainly closer than anyone the Rs have put up.

So do the Democrats let him fail the first time? And then cut a deal and swoop in and get him elected on a second vote?
Dem support only if he stipulates and agrees to open the floor to certain Dem legislative priorities.

Emmer can’t get there with Republican votes alone because Trump is directing more than a handful of extremist MAGA Republican reps.

An irreconcilable impasse lies ahead. Hakeem Jeffries is right - the only path forward for the House is for a faction of responsible moderates to cross over and work with Democrats to move needed legislation.

I don't see how many deal can be made with Emmer. He reportedly has 26 Rs against him. If he cant manage his own party how would he be able to fulfill promises made to the Dems?

Utterly deplorable, but then so are the majority of House Republicans.

House Republicans have adjourned their all-members meeting so that speaker designate Rep. Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) can talk to the roughly two dozen holdouts in a smaller group setting, according to lawmakers leaving the room. They have been told to reconvene in the same room at 4 p.m. Eastern.
“It’s a dumpster fire, frankly,” Rep. Bill Huizenga (R-Mich.) told reporters as he left the room.

It seems crystal clear at this point that no ”moderate” Republican will get support from MAGA and no MAGA candidate will get support from the moderates. So impasse.

The only solution I can see is a quorum of purple district Republicans extract significant concessions to vote for Jeffries. I suppose they would be worried about getting killed in the primary, but such a show of bipartisanship would help them in the general Election.

So do the Democrats let him fail the first time? And then cut a deal and swoop in and get him elected on a second vote?

They should do it now and demonstrate they are the adults in the room. Trump hates him, which is a very good start. Enter than a MAGA idiot.

Trump = GOP GOP = Trump

Emmer Drops Out Of Speaker Race After Trump Attack

I mean, this isn't overly shocking. Anyone with half a brain knows Trump still OWNS that entire party. It's his until he either dies, or decides he no longer wants part in politics. But there's zero doubt that he is the Republican party leader. The man that attempted to overthrow the 2020 election and with over 90 pending felonies is the leader of the Republican Party in the United States of America.
