Showing ID can prevent a possible problem, why do you think you have to provide ID when asked in other situations in life. Would you tell the police or the TSA "no" and tell them there is no problem just let me by?
Depending on the state, you have to establish your ID somehow before you vote. They all seem to work fine.
I ask again: please provide an example of actual voter fraud that would have been prevented by voter ID.

Whether or not we have 100% voter id this time around the "The Truth Squads" that will be positioned at polling places and drop off boxes in the major cities will be ensuring people aren't dropping off multiple ballots and those voting in person check out as being citizens.

If you vote illegally, you leave a paper trail pretty much in perpetuity; yet, despite this permanent record, finding examples of voter fraud has been incredibly difficult, with actual instances incredibly rare.
The things you like to list as "requiring ID" do not require pre-registration nor require permanent "records" for any of those transactions. Exactly why voter ID is unnecessary, aside from handwritten signatures which are required everywhere when you vote, to compare to your signature on-record that you provided when you registered.
I'd rather do background checks on those who remove eligible voters from the registration lists.
