How have we, as a society, allowed this?

H11.

If you look up what kid of low beam headlight bulb your vehicle requires, it’s most likely an H11. Since 2005 or so, I haven’t pinged down the exact year, almost every single manufacturer has their low beam bulbs as the H11.

The cheapest, longest lasting option is rated for, per the listing, 250 hours. The brightest option is rate for 150-200 hours. I don’t need to tell you that’s not a lot

In comparison, a 9003 headlight bulb is rated for about 1000 hours. Every single other bulb on my shelf has a higher hour rating than the H11.

So my question is this. And it’s not solely regarding headlight bulbs.

Why do we continue to be okay with paying more for less quality?

For reference these are Silvania bulbs.

Get you one of those JC Whitney light bars. Work wonders with the hi beam fanbois, and gives your ride a Mad Max vibe.

Are you working in an auto parts store? I used to do it part time. I always had good luck with Sylvania silver stars, or whatever those are called... but seems like the brightest bulbs burn out the fastest.

We don’t.
We do. We’ve voted for it. We made our statements with our own money.

We absolutely do. Our car batteries right now are absolute junk compared to 20 years ago.

20 years ago our car batteries were $100 with a solid 8 year warranty. Now, they are $200+ with a 3 year warranty. And the amount of batteries I’ve seen on my return cart in the last two weeks is a solid anecdotal testimony towards the quality.

I guess you don’t want to believe it. Because you seem base a lot of your statements on belief.

But I’m telling you. Most of our car batteries are junk right now. If you don’t buy the $350 option, your not going to get what you paid for.

I buy Interstate batteries at Costco. They typically cost around $125 and last about 5 years. The AGM batteries are $180 but I’m not sure how long they last because I’ve never bought one.

I’m pretty okay with paying $25/year for car batteries.

If you’re driving the right car sure.

Had a customer who had been through 5 of our gold batteries in 18 months. She was driving a recent Volkswagen.

Lots of newer cars don’t like having a battery that can’t withstand the higher electronic loads. The higher end models are obvious, BMW, Audi, Lexus. But now Jeeps, newer Chevys.

Newer everything. Had a 2012 Kia completely stop because it didn’t like our battery. She had to go get her Sorrento reprogrammed. Soon as I connected the post her alarms went off and the car wouldn’t start.

2015 and newer BMW’s need to be programmed to let the car accept the battery.

So what point are you trying to make?

capitalism, baby

I guess the point I’m trying to make is that I’ve never spent over $125 for a car battery and most of the batteries I’ve owned lasted for about 5 years.

Where do you work and what brand of batteries do you sell that cars are rejecting them left and right?

Ok. So. I work at AutoZone. And according to our metrics I’m told we have roughly 20% of the market. You should look at our stock prices, it’s kind of insane.

Have you bought a battery in the last few years? We are told by people making a whole lot more than me that our batteries only last 4-5 years.

Understand. Now. That 15 years ago we had 8 year warranties on batteries costing only $100. Now? Those same batteries are $200 with only a 3 year warranty.

Why might that be?

lol. Yeah. That’s uhhhh. Kind of how it works.

Not surprised you don’t understand that.

Have you ever actually read the back of the packaging on those bulbs?

Honestly, this explains a lot given your post history over the years.

Maybe the problem is that Duralast batteries are shit. That doesn’t mean the entire industry is corrupt.

I’m not sure how old my current battery is. Probably about 2 years. I think I paid about $115 for it at the time. Right now on Costco’s website they are listed for $125 and AGMs are $180.

The only battery I’ve owned in the past 20 years that didn’t last at least 4 years was an Everstart from Walmart. It died after about 2 years. I’ll never buy one of those pieces of shit again.

You lack perspective. There are only about 3 actual battery manufacturers. (Thanks capitalism!).

AutoZobe, Advanced Auto, and I’m pretty sure Napa batteries are made by the same manufacturer.

Everstart sounds like a Walmart.

I think you misunderstand me. I’m not advocating AutoZone. Given that our AGM batteries are about $245.

I’m trying to tell you all that you are constantly paying more for less quality. With less warranty.

You lack perspective.
My perspective, for whatever it’s worth, is that of someone who has owned about 20 different vehicles over the past 40 years, driven nearly 2 million miles, and replaced more batteries than I can remember.

I appreciate you sounding the alarm that Duralast batteries from AutoZone are overpriced and unreliable. I kind of already suspected that was the case, based on conversations with friends who have purchased Duralast batteries. And that’s why I’ve never purchased one.

I for one will continue buying Interstate batteries from Costco until they give me a reason not to, because so far I have zero complaints about the price or the reliability.

One thing I'll say about this is the electrical demands placed on today's vehicles has massively increased while automakers seem to be stuck using the same old same old for most applications.

My complaint with headlights is how bright they are now. And the recent auto dimming crap means every oncoming car blinds you.
And then those that already have the brightest lights have their lower lights on also and you can't see a dam thing 3 seconds after you go by them. Lights have gotten out of hand.

Bro are you new to America? If you make something of quality it lasts to long. Can’t sell a bunch of stuff if it doesn’t break.

that's funny because the only shit battery I have ever owned was an Interstate. Caused so many problems with my truck. and they wouldn't take it back. Will never shop there again.

The only batteries I've never had problems with are from WalMart.

The conditions matter as well. I used to have 5 vehicles, with 2 being parked in a garage daily. The cars sitting outside, would deteriorate much faster.

Why do you hate America?

Pick one.

A month ago the Hawk Tia gurl was the 2nd most popular podcast, and then she ran a pump and dump scheme and ran off with millions.

A health care insurance provider whose decisions, involving implementing an AI to automatically reject claims, lead to him getting offed in the streets of NY.

Nazis walking around in broad daylight in various states and not getting knocked the **** out.

The complete war on public education. Including one state to give vouchers that resulted in every single private school to increase their tuition to match that money.

Schools being shot up on the regular. A problem so complicated that every other nation on this planet has figured it out.

My home state having almost the highest cancer rates in the nation.

Let’s not forget who we voted for to turn this all around, a guy now getting cucked by the richest guy in the world, who now apparently has dominating influence over our House of Representatives.

Do you want to know more?
