Dear How to Do It,
I am a straight, queer curious, cis female in my mid-40s. In 2010, a male partner realized he could make me squirt with his fingers. At first, it was terrifying since liquid was pouring out. Years later, I’ve found that it is pleasurable and I can do it on my own or with partners if I am really turned on. The problem that I have is that it is messy. Former partners didn’t want to have sex in their bed because of the mess, and I’ve had TWO partners (one of 8 months, the other only two dates and FaceTime calls) who actually cleaned up the mess with a pet spray for dogs who pee in the house. Oh reader, I feel this so much. As someone who squirts pretty much every time I have sex, I went through this same thing with dating. Either they fetishized it, they thought it was gross, or they wanted to debate me about my own body…it was a minefield. Ultimately, I chose to let people know this casually before we would have sex. I wouldn’t make a big deal out of telling them about it and would see if they would match that energy or make it entirely about them. I chose not to continue seeing anyone who shamed me, fetishized me, or asked me not to squirt—but that was my decision. It is up to you where you want to draw the line, what you can tolerate, and how much you are willing to educate your partners.
This is the double-edged sword that comes with squirting and it is the wet spot we have to bear. This is now an active part of your sex life and you should treat it as such. Given the responses many of these individuals have, you may want to start alerting them sooner, gauging their reaction and offering what they can do to be helpful: “It really helps me feel relaxed when I’m not the only person prepping for messy sex/squirting.” Or: “Can we keep one of those reusable sex blankets at your place so neither of us has to worry about the sheets?”
In general, it’s not a great sign if the other person immediately makes it about them or projects their feelings about squirting onto you. It is not your job to educate them on squirting, but you can explain what it means for your body (i.e. when is it an orgasm for you, does it feel good?) and make it a team effort in collaborating on how to react and prepare for it instead of hoping they’ll have the right response.
Of course, regardless of your sex partners, it sounds like messy sex from squirting is a burden on your shoulders as well. For your own personal well-being in messy sex land, I highly recommend investing in a few sex blankets made for squirting like Liberator’s, Squirtopia’s, or the Splash Blanket as well as a disposable option like puppy pads. These are good things to have on the go if you’re at someone else’s space but you can also encourage your sexual partners to have these on hand as well.
