How to Do It is Slate’s sex advice column. Have a question? Send it to Stoya and Rich here. It’s anonymous!

Dear How to Do It,
I am a straight, queer curious, cis female in my mid-40s. In 2010, a male partner realized he could make me squirt with his fingers. At first, it was terrifying since liquid was pouring out. Years later, I’ve found that it is pleasurable and I can do it on my own or with partners if I am really turned on. The problem that I have is that it is messy. Former partners didn’t want to have sex in their bed because of the mess, and I’ve had TWO partners (one of 8 months, the other only two dates and FaceTime calls) who actually cleaned up the mess with a pet spray for dogs who pee in the house. It’s humiliating, to say the least.

It makes me uncomfortable because while I want a long-lasting partnership (which I haven’t had since my mid-20s), I fear that men find this “skill” hot until they don’t. I will also add that while these men can make me squirt, I haven’t had a clitoral orgasm with them. I’m looking to date and in the back of my head am embarrassed as I feel like men associate this with porn, and porn is fleeting. Or at least it can be video to video… Help!

Dear Unfortunate Mermaid,
I’m going to put you in the hands-slash-directly under the stream of Lola Jean, a sex educator and “squirting superhero,” who claims the world record for volume squirted within a one-minute period. Jean has written extensively about squirting and personally related to your letter. Here’s her full response:

Oh reader, I feel this so much. As someone who squirts pretty much every time I have sex, I went through this same thing with dating. Either they fetishized it, they thought it was gross, or they wanted to debate me about my own body…it was a minefield. Ultimately, I chose to let people know this casually before we would have sex. I wouldn’t make a big deal out of telling them about it and would see if they would match that energy or make it entirely about them. I chose not to continue seeing anyone who shamed me, fetishized me, or asked me not to squirt—but that was my decision. It is up to you where you want to draw the line, what you can tolerate, and how much you are willing to educate your partners.
This is the double-edged sword that comes with squirting and it is the wet spot we have to bear. This is now an active part of your sex life and you should treat it as such. Given the responses many of these individuals have, you may want to start alerting them sooner, gauging their reaction and offering what they can do to be helpful: “It really helps me feel relaxed when I’m not the only person prepping for messy sex/squirting.” Or: “Can we keep one of those reusable sex blankets at your place so neither of us has to worry about the sheets?”
In general, it’s not a great sign if the other person immediately makes it about them or projects their feelings about squirting onto you. It is not your job to educate them on squirting, but you can explain what it means for your body (i.e. when is it an orgasm for you, does it feel good?) and make it a team effort in collaborating on how to react and prepare for it instead of hoping they’ll have the right response.
Of course, regardless of your sex partners, it sounds like messy sex from squirting is a burden on your shoulders as well. For your own personal well-being in messy sex land, I highly recommend investing in a few sex blankets made for squirting like Liberator’s, Squirtopia’s, or the Splash Blanket as well as a disposable option like puppy pads. These are good things to have on the go if you’re at someone else’s space but you can also encourage your sexual partners to have these on hand as well. Just like it is not only on you to provide and prepare barrier methods or lube, both parties should invest in sexual cleanup as well.

I’ve had one woman who squirted. And it happened during 80-90% of her orgasms. First time there was no warning and it was during oral. Damn near choked from the stream going into my mouth. But I manned up and took it like a champ. After that it was game on. We just laid down towels and getting her to squirt was my goal, and hers. She loved it as much as I did. She had orgasms multiple orgasms very easily. She was also the most adventurous I’ve ever had in the sack. Totally in touch with her body and I had a great time keeping up with her sex drive.

After we were no longer together I was always hopeful I’d find another. They are pretty rare.

I call bullshit. If it's viscous it's one thing. Most it I've seen is piss
Wife created a schism in her Facebook expectant mothers group, as many of them hadn’t experienced it and didn’t believe it was real.
We had a trip to labor and delivery and they tested to confirm it wasn’t amniotic fluid.
“You’re a squirter, hon,” is what the nurse told my wife.
I don’t know if they put that in your chart. Maybe @Urohawk knows.

I did not care for it. It felt like I was being pissed on. The mood killer getting towels from the bathroom to lay on. It just wasn't for me.

It's my calling card. It's all about the tongue, finger placement and pressure. They love it. They also won't stop telling everyone about it so it's free advertisement as well.

where does it squirt from? I don't understand vaginas
Web MD: Female ejaculation is a release of both urine and a substance from the Skene's glands.

If you are so inclined to search for videos, there’s a whole genre of squirting. However I’m pretty sure most of them are just chicks pissing. It sure seems better if it really comes from a true orgasm.

Dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge.
