How old were you when you realized the tigerhawk logo…

For you youngsters, the tiger hawk was extremely controversial it's first couple years. Hayden arranged for it to be designed, and there was quite the hubbub over whether he owned it and was making money off of Iowa using it. Don't think he was, but not sure.

It's so obvious

And many publications, from Sports Illustrated to Barstool, now consider it one of the top ten logos in college football. Most recently Yahoo Sports named ours in the Top Ten best college football helmets (check out #1, ‘Nole fans):

Bill Snyder did the same thing when he left Iowa for KSU. He had the logo redesigned to the current Powercat. The same guy that created the Tiger Hawk also drew the Powercat. Not sure if there are any hidden messages in that logo.

Look at the figure…with a little imagination (not much really) it’s pretty obvious….today when I see it, the first thing I see is “fry”..Hayden didn’t do nothing without a purpose. Sublineal messaging included.. ;)
So Hayden told the artist (Bill Colbert) that he wanted a subliminal "F-R-Y" embedded in the logo? I dunno about that.

Why do you believe that was intentional?
For the same reason Fry had the visitor’s locker room painted pink…The guy was a psych major…There was always much more to him than what met the eye. Remember how he would “go off” on (certain) reporters at pressers “over nothing”?
Don’t know for sure if it was “intentional” but those who worked with him clued me in to this idea 40 some years ago…They told me Hayden really liked the looks of the logo and he liked what it said. If nothing else, it plays well into the legend of Fry at UIowa.

Wazoo’s logo is the same type… and didn’t southern Mississippi do the same… and didn’t UIowa complain about them infringing?

Yes, and Southern Mississippi changed their logo under pressure from the U of I. The Hamilton HS Hawkeyes in Michigan (AJ Ediger’s old school) had to change away from the Tigerhawk as well. They made it more cartoon like and worked a hidden “H” into the crest atop the head to avoid a cease and desist:

Remember a couple of years ago UWisconsin threatened Waukee (Ia.) HS with a lawsuit for infringing on their “rolling W” (copyrighted) without their permission. I believe Waukee acquiesced.

Pella had to change their logo a few years ago as well as it was the same font as Purdue.

For the "Fry" I could see the top being a lowercase f, the bottom left being a backward r, and the beak being a y. But it is a bit of a stretch. Not as much of a stretch as the lowercase i, but still a stretch.
I see the beak as the “r”… and understanding it’s a subliminal message it is never supposed to be obvious at all. Of course, it is a stretch…it’s good conversation abd it has to do with the Hawks….the logo does exactly what Hayden hopes it would do! And that is the genius of John Hayden Fry.

If the beak is the r, where is the y?

The two parts of the beak is the y. Cover up the other pieces with your hand and rotate so the beak is pointing down.
