I’m jealous….

1. Phil doesn't bleed.
2. Phil hates the color red.
3. Phil hates windows more than he does the color red.
4. Phil likes dungeons, you can keep the sex part though.
5. Phil realizes he is an old fart, as his room in HS was literally a dungeon with no windows and he loved it. It was his happy place....
6. Phil is weird.
7. Be like Phil.
1. Lemon doesn’t bleed, either. Coincidence?

When a billionaire tells you it's not about money and the playing field has been leveled, it's been leveled. The problem hasn't been money for a long time. As @vhsalum has been saying, and I have been if you read my posting history, it's about everything but money.

Which billionaire is that? Iowa wrestling doesn't have any billionaire donors. The donor who landed DT at OKST is a billionaire.

All I’m saying is I love it. That’s my opinion. I would have loved to train in a place like this. Seriously. That’s just my opinion. Some will like it. Some won’t. Once it’s open people will decide on their own. It’s different. But I’ve always said, “dare to be different and you will succeed”.

I am with you 100%. It looks great and I don’t understand the window nonsense. to me it’s just such a weird thing to complain about.

OSU didn't have a billionaire wrestling donor either until April. Maybe Iowa should form an executive search committee for a willing billionaire donor. I'm not kidding. Plenty of rich people with huge egos.

I’ll take this one……. IOWA. That’s why he’s here.
I think that if Iowa tried to sell themselves more, they would land top recruits. It just seems that it is not what TnT spend their time doing.

You have more experience with the recruiting process. How much time did they spend recruiting your son as compared to other schools?

i liked it better when Iowa was The team you LOVED to HATE !!! Those plain black singlets and those Iconic Warm ups were all it took to piss people off whenever the Iowa Wrestling team came to a competitors gym for a match. I've been at Hawkeye matches all over the place...anywhere East of the Mississippi and I have traveled to see them and the reaction when the team took the mat was pure excitement. I admit it has more subdued as of late and the arrogance that went with mat superiority has slipped but If we could make the right portal moves and grab some of the elite recruits I dont really think we are that far off from really starting to dominate most teams and be competitive with PState. We just need to land a few key guys to add into the mix and I think we can get the ball rolling again. I still believe an ELITE FULL- TIME recruiting coordinator is a much needed addition to the program.

None of those things are ever going to happen with Tom at the helm. He has made that abundantly clear.

Also stoked by trolls and TnT haters. Not saying criticism of the facility or TnT isn't warranted, but there's a lot of energy spent on defaming Iowa wrestling right now. When you can put 15,000 butts in seats for college wrestling meets, someone's going to want to mess with that.

yeah. i don't think you understand the meaning of the word "defaming"

It's been a pretty reasonable discussion around here. Not much of the "Tom makes guys hate wrestling" and the ilk. Just facts. 2 champs since 2010. Finishing below ISU at NCAAs, no improvement in offensive output, in scrambling and very little in the way of top shelf recruitS coming in.

Abundantly clear??
We can't pick up a couple elite recruits and hit some and a few key guys in the portal??
Has it happened? Class of 2024 and 2025 and we've got a total of 2.

2026 - (hey @smalls103 we need an update bro)

We should get Ross and Mocco if they end up in different weights. Not getting the Raneys, Bassett or Forrest.

You said it is abundantly clear that none of that can happen.
Not that it hasn't happened. Abundantly clear it never will.

Correct. Tom has made it clear he won't make any of the changes we think he should.

He said to insiders that he's not changing the way he recruits (won't chase)

He said that they're going to get better at "finishing clean" - NOT get better at scrambling

He said there will be no changes to the staff.

So yeah. I'd say that's pretty abundantly clear. All of these things were said to insiders (who reported as much) on this board. Plus it confirms what I've heard as well. It's nauseating.

Oh, I think that I do., but I'm not sure that you know what "reasonable" means. Opinions differ. Let's leave it at that.

What "insider" said he's not changing the way he recruits? That has and is still changing.
Finishing clean is always something to work on and should always be a priority, but scrambling is being worked on.

Great, so we can expect to see some significant improvements next season in regards to wrestling through tough positions?

Any idea why it took Tom the better part of a decade to figure out that scrambling was a part of wrestling?

Yes, I do believe we will see improvements in those positions.

I'm fairly confident I could arrange a meet up with Tom to ask him that after he gets back from the Olympic Qaulifer with Spencer, if you are interested.

Are you inviting me? I would love that but I live in Colorado. Maybe this fall when I'm back for a football game?

In the meantime, you should ask him why Iowa has been so slow in adapting to scrambling and wrestling through tough positions. I'm genuinely curious to hear his reasoning, as there likely exists some rationale behind it, right?

not even PSU was sold out this year... We are not Nebby and will brag about fake ticket sales. People are buying the tickets incase Iowa gets good again but not one time was the place actually full

I'll be as transparent as I can. Honestly, I appreciated Tom and Terry's approach more than any other "top" programs that were after my kid. What meant the most were the simple hand written notes that Terry sent via snail mail. Gabe received so much, from so many, it was overwhelming. But here are two story's that stick out the most with these two:

When Terry came to our home for Gabe's visit, it was literally the FIRST day where he could visit. He made it a point to make sure he was the first coach that crossed the door's threshold, and was there early in the morning. When he came in, it literally never felt like a coach visiting, he made himself right at home, ate breakfast with us, played with the dog, and took the required pics with the snake. When he left, my wife asked who he was. I told her to look him up. When she did, she was amazed at his accolades, but more so that he didn't spend any time bragging about them. He set the standard for visits, and I knew why he wanted to be first after all of them were done.

Tom and Morningstar came to Who's number one that year to watch Gabe. I remember it was a nut house after he beat Rocco, with a bunch of coaches trying to get to Gabe and I. When Tom finally got to us, I'll never forget what he said, it was simple and didn't blow smoke or anything like that. His message was clear and to the point, "we want Gabe, like what we saw, he needs to be a Hawkeye"

Those two are the reason Gabe is a Hawkeye. I could tell you all the stories from this year alone that have confirmed over and over again this is the right place for my kid. But they won't matter to most of you. I appreciated all the coaches who took the time to recruit my kid, that came to our home, that called, every last one of them, but NONE impressed us the way this team did or has. Look, I get it, you fans want to be NUMBER 1 and be the best, but as a parent, let me be VERY clear: That is not the priority for my kid. That's a goal for sure, but I want him to be a good person, a better man, and a grateful individual. I know that all those things, and then some, he gets here.

I'm not some homer that dotes on coaches just because. I don't believe in that crap. What I do believe in is trusting the process that was laid out for MY wrestler, and to that extent, I've not been let down in the slightest. OH and unlike a lot of you dim-witted, fair weather fans, I have EVERY confidence that we will get back to the top of the mountain.

And yes, I know some of you are going to rip this apart, but you should know enough about me by now to know that I really don't give a rat's ass....

Just speaking my heart.

But we still sell a lot more than the other teams, whose fans might like seeing our support drop.

Authenticity is one of those things that's really hard to fake. TnT are always authentic.
Thanks Phil!

We appreciate the insight. Can you tell us if there was any negative recruiting about Iowa and if so what those were. I ask because I think a narrative is starting to form about Iowa wrestling that is holding us back from gaining interest over some top recruits. I understand if you don’t feel comfortable. Again, appreciate the insight.

But we still sell a lot more than the other teams, whose fans might like seeing our support drop.
iowa will be middle of the pack attendance by 2029 without changes to the staff. I can't think of one exciting coach we have that people want to work with.... TnT have burned so many bridges and refuse to recruit. I'm Glad Gabes family liked them but they are not the norm now a days. I know it doesn't matter and as long as the inner circle is a bunch of bootlickers but at least we will be able to see what DT does at Okiest with no coaching experience and just think what could of been for the hawks.... Maybe we will get real lucky and M* or Telford will get the Head job when TnT retire.

I think that type of reruiting appeals to some people- it definitely did for you guys. I am kind of the same way. Do not keep bothering me. I can figure things out without getting a lot of reminders and calls etc.

I respect the heck out of a person who holds to their beliefs and TnT have a style and system they are comfortable with and they aren't breaking any rules and are living with integrity. Good for them! The world needs more people like that.

The question still remains - why aren't they landing more top level recruits?

Another question that can be asked is what is more important - living with integrity and developing young boys into fine men or winning NCAA Championships? Only 1 team can win the championship each year. A lot of boys can be developed into fine young men each year. It seems TnT do their part to develop boys into men and that is noble and should not be overlooked.
