I don’t know about you guys...

key is they have to rebound so they get stops, not just giving up 2nd shots. Kris is upgrade over PMAC in
rebounding. CMAC is a plus rebounder, but you give up scoring.
Rebounding and defense are one and the same. It's as much about effort as it is about talent. It doesn't matter if you play really good defense during a possession and then give up the offensive rebound. Penn St only hung around the first half because of poor rebounding.

I have read comments in other threads bashing the Hawks for pretty much everything. One of the many is that as long as Fran is the coach we will NEVER be good at defense….wow. The Hawks have been tremendous defensively for two games in a row now.
I'm right there with ya Perry

No argument the defense the last 2 games has been very good. Even with level of opponent. Iowa has played 2 of the worst 3 offenses in the conference on an efficiency basis the last 2 games. And has dominated them on D, which is encouraging.

Now can they be average on D against an elite offense like Purdue? That is the next question.

Well let's not go crazy here. They've played excellent defense the last 2 games. We all hope it continues going forward, but it's been just 2 games and they were against lesser offensive teams. In the previous 16 or 17 games I think they ranked about 130 in defensive efficiency. Theyre at 91 now. We've seen this before where the Hawks put together a couple of good defensive efforts only to slide right back into old habits. Let's see how the rest of the season plays out before praising Fran as a defensive guru.

The key word was NEVER…..someone spouted during a pout/tantrum. I clearly understand that they’ve come no where close to doing it consistently but they have in fact played good defense for two games in a row. If a fan can’t be at least slightly enthusiastic about that, then I guess they never will be…..I don’t care where those teams rank offensively, they have guys who can go off on any team and our defense has been good.

Our opponents may have something to do with it, but yeah, it has been better.

yeah, neither team had a low post they run offense thru, like we'll face in Purdue.

For team that screens and cuts, we've been terrible in ball screens in past but last 2 games we've done very good at hedging (Rebraca is good at this) and recovering and the help defenders have done really good at playing the gaps to make it look the the lane is closing and yet being able to recover to shooters... less over help and poor rotations which have plagued us so much in the past.

Iowa has done a better job of switching on ball screens and identifying shooters. Defense will never be perfect as guys are going to make shots, but the last two games have been encouraging.

Is Sandfort hurt?

But Iowa's defense has looked pretty salty to me the last couple of games.
Would agree but they still need to focus on rebounding. It was like 20-5 at one point in the first half. That’s ridiculous. It’s about effort on the boards and too many times I just don’t see it .

I wondered that too about Sandfort....

In the Lounge we know him. He doesn’t use the free board.
@hawkgasser will like this post. Gassman I didn’t make it down to learn the leanback clap like initially planned, but if you look at the PMac clip in this thread, the guy with glasses on taking a sip of beer is me, watching intently to learn your moves.

Both are true.
They have played better D AND they've played a couple of offensively challenged opponents.
If they hold pu to 60 or less that would be impressive.

When a guy misses an open shot, it's hard to give the defense too much credit. RU and PSU missed a lot of open shots.
