Don’t get me wrong….he’s a good coach and I believe he can do well at Iowa. But there is one thing that concerns me:

Do his teams have a tendency to wilt under pressure? Didn’t Drake lose a late lead in the tournament last year against Washington St.? They definitely had an epic choke against Miami the year before. And West Virginia struggled down the stretch this season, going 6-9 and not beating anyone of real significance.

Would this continue at Iowa? I sure hope not. We had enough of that with Fran.

I am liking McCollum more and more. His teams are tough, and they are always well prepared for the big games. While I think DeVries is a done deal, I’m really hoping it’s McCollum.

Do not talk that way about golden boy with a brother who played football at Iowa and the NFL
He's the safe bet by Beth, but there's nothing in his coaching record that makes you go wow. He'll be ok until the fan base gets tired of Iowa not making the 2 week of the tournament. Just looking at his coaching record is reason for my prediction of his time at Iowa if he is hired. Nothing special, just like Fran....

I will gladly take the chance. He took Drake further than the fella we just left go after 15 years of squandering away some good teams. Happen to remember the classic flop with Brunner and co.?

Could be, but my slight preference for DeVries over McCollum is that DeVries has recruited for a high D1 program, whereas McCollum has only recruited at the D2 and mid-major level.

Have to ask this but will it be harder to win in a tougher conference than it is to win in the MVC? I just remember Keno Davis having success at Drake and then floundering at Providence. Im not doubting that DeVries can coach but sometimes moving up in competition may be a little more difficult? The Lickliter experiment proved that!

Where are you hearing this? I’m honestly not obsessively following this, I hadn’t heard it was a done deal. If that’s true, I’m disappointed in Beth for not doing her due diligence.

Fran has taken multiple teams further into the NCAA tournament than DeVries has… in fact I don’t think DeVries has a win on his NCAA tournament resume. Is Beth sure she wants to burn $10mm just to get DeVries in the door? Idk

Flipped WVU from 9 wins to 19 wins and won at Phog Allen so he can definitely do something

Just a guess on my part, based on what others have said.

Iowa > your opinion of Iowa

I am solely playing devils advocate here (I am very hopeful DeVries will improve the program) but I don't know what metric you're using to justify the bolded statement.

Conference tournament championships? Both won them.

Conference regular season championships? Fran never did it at Iowa, but he won multiple at Siena and one at UNC Greensboro.

NCAA games? DeVries has never been to the round of 32. Meanwhile, Fran went to the round of 32 multiple times at both Iowa and Sienna.

What DeVries did at Drake is very impressive. But he has done nothing yet that guarantees he can break through to a sweet 16.

I think there is some luck in turning a program around to find players that break out beyond their rating and build momentum. Hoiberg for instance had pretty good run at ISU, been kind of Meh at Nebraska. McDermott was great at UNI, meh at ISU, then reborn at Creighton.

As far as choking, Lute Olson after getting to Final-4, had some teams with Gannon/Hansen/carfino that were called the Chokeyes because they kept losing close games. He went to AZ and won a National Title because he got better players.

I want a coach that values defense because I think when we get into NCAA tourney, even if we are overmatched athletically, we can possibly play a better team tough and win some upsets. Getting blown out in first few minutes in NCAA tourney is a bummer as a fan.

What do you think of the 4star players McCollum has recruited?
