Spare me the excuses of why that’s not true. ****ing Payton Sandfort played with everything broken. Dude is basically the last of old school mentality in the weak new age of college athletics. I wasn’t always a fan of his hero ball but he will ALWAYS BE A HAWK. Unlike some others.

Disagree. Money was always part of the game. But, 15 years ago, players had to sit out a year if they transferred.

That REALLY disincentivized players from quitting and shopping better deals halfway though the season. Players still transferred, but not nearly to this extent.

NIL is here to stay. BUT BRING BACK THE TRANSFER RULES.

Owen isn’t a NBA player so this is his chance to get as much cash as possible. Iowa with Fran was a feeder system for kids like Owen in this day and age. Until they can have post season success and money coming in then this is what we are.

Beth needs to make a home run hire

He may not be a NBA player as you say, but he'll make lots of money overseas or in other professional basketball leagues. Aaron White has done very good for himself over the years as has Olaseni, Cook, and others.

Bruans should have been starting at power forward and directed to rebound, block shots and put down vicious dunks & not worry about fouls. Body up and be physical, hurt someone if necessary. Old school style.

I agree---I would have liked to see a two Big look with Freeman and Brauns. Freeman had the ability to to dribble drive and had good offensive game. He didn't try to play defense too hard because he's would end up on the bench with fouls. The small ball that Fran played with both Thelwell and Harding with Dix at 3 and Sandy at PF couldn't rebound or get stops. Small ball stopped when Freeman went down.

That said, the Illini game was eye opening. The Illini rebounding almost all their misses made Iowa's roster look like little boys. Braun had the strength and hops and toughness to compete, there wasn't anyone else. Dimbele is below the rim guy. Traore has hops, but lacks height to play inside. The Next coach won't construct a roster like what Fran came up with.

This is why Payton will be remembered and in the historic records for Iowa basketball. Owen will be a footnote and forgotten.

Yeah I’m not denying that. I’m just saying he can get paid quite a bit the next 2 years here to get his young adult life started before moving to play overseas. The amount he can get these next 2 years is life changing money for a lot of people.

That's exactly what happened too. You knew he was transferring a week or two before his pinky problem by his attitude.

If college sports are going to be pay for play, fine, but I think there needs to be some structure to it and resemble more what is done in pro sports.

Couple things I'd like to see are some sort of a salary cap system, and contracts. Whether it's 1 year, 2 years, or whatever. Some sort of commitment from the player that they are going to stick around for an agreed upon amount of time.

Right now it just feels like a total free for all, where anything goes. Take cash, shut it down mid season, then bolt.

Someone mentioned bringing back the old transfer rules.

I don't know, just some thoughts off the top of my head.

They should have longevity bonuses or some similar factor that discourages all the moving around.

There does need to be a salary cap. Not sure how they enforce it.

Yep, he doesn't have the ball handling and post moves Freeman has, but he is bigger, better jumper, better free throw shooter, better dunker. I honestly question if our record would have been better without Freeman, Brauns plays all 40 and Dembele only playing if Brauns fouls out. Dembele had to have been promised minutes in recruiting, or Fran doesn't have eyes in practice.

Transfer rules could be adjusted, sure, but there's zero reason a kid shouldn't be able to leave a program if his coach is fired, if he's not playing, if he's being recruited over, etc. etc. The players are the reason everybody watches, it's absurd they were essentially powerless until now.

NCAA and colleges made their own bed, now they can pull back the sheets and sleep in it. If you're not watching the games today, you're missing out.

Couldn't agree more. I don't see how iowa mens bb is ever relevant again under the current landscape. Freeman isn't even a stud and we can't afford him.
