Illinois is better. But the big ten refs come on

I will say that Iowa isn't the only team to get screwed by the B1G officials.

Would be nice to see some kind of effort to improve things in the B1G.

It's not a good thing to be known as a physical conference.... Because it CLEARLY doesn't result in championships.

"Best conference in the country".

No title in 20 years.

Sorry I didn't see this thread first....I posted pretty much the same thing in another thread.

Everybody has their own perspective but from and Illinois fan I think the amount of hooks Garza gets away with (it's a lot) is fairly annoying.

But as biased fans we are all looking at what the other team gets away with (including me) and not what our team gets away with.

Another hot take that won't gain any likes is that Damonte Williams plays too edgy and loses his cool too often but the contact that was made was not above the shoulders on that flagrant.

That's how 99.9% of Illinois fans will see it and 99.9% of Iowa fans will say it was clear cut.
Well the 0.1% of Illinois fans are right to think he got him too high and that it was a good call.

They had a shot from the baseline after the call was announced that showed it clear as day why it was a flagrant 1.

People can hate the rule, but the call was correct.

Deal with it.

agreed... we hung tough, but they just had their way with the #5 team in the country...
We need to find a way to limit them from playing with the frenetic dog-humping energy their grabby guards play with.

Maybe pay their opponents in each round to throw some bench guys out there and just land some elbow shots to wipe the smirks off their faces and wear them down little by little each game.

Especially with Curbelo, him taking a few elbows to his face would actually make an improvement.......

Da'Monte's arm wasn't close to the head region on the replay. The announcer said it was the extension of the arm that was bad. I don't know the rule and don't care either way.

Why are you arguing it if you don't care?.........

And like I said, the replay on the monitor showed the angle facing the hoop. The baseline shot showed McCaffrey getting hit in the face, clear as day.

I'm not lying to you, either. Again, deal with it.

You guys seriously think you just routinely get screwed by refs letting the other team be “thugs” or “play rugby”?? Might need to adjust your own defensive intensity. You can choose to believe Illinois is “in trouble,” for the NCAA Tournament, but you’ll be in the small minority for a reason.

Good game, and good luck.

Maybe I’m wrong but if Curbelo was a Hawkeye I think you’d think he was the best guard in the country and the Hawks were destined to win it all, which they might or might not. Jbo is a better long range marksman so you lose that but you get a terrific ball handler distributor and dare I say it a much faster guard. Regardless I love all Bohannan has brought to the Hawks

I see it as clear cut bias 11 free throws to 3 in first half. No way a grabby team only sends an opponent with a high level offense to the line 3 times.

We were dumping the ball down to Kofi nonstop while you guys were jacking 3s.

You guys shot nearly 33% more from 3 and had 3 less offensive rebounds and we shot a whole 6 more free throws and you act like those numbers are daunting.

This post shows what a dumb homer you are.

They review hook and holds if Garza gets away A LOT as you say. Why is not reviewed as they review way too much nowadays? Since your are dumb I will answer it for you. It is because he doesn’t do it.

Now on the flagrant one. All three announcers plus the retired ref they went to ALL called it a flagrant.

Also re watch the game ans see how manny times the announcers who are neutral parties say Illinois got away with steps or a travel or a push off or a foul. Then count how many times they say Iowa got away with something.

But congrats to Illinois you finally have a good team and you did not have to pay recruits and cheat.

I have morals.

Curbelo is the kind of player that would be clapping, and frantically guarding his guy with his feet moving 100 mph, and trying to be two inches away from him wherever he goes while always having his hands all over him, and banging his chest, and bouncing up and down and waving his hands in the air and constantly yelling LETS GO after someone on his team makes a shot to trim their deficit to 108-52...................

I don't want that on my team, even if f***ing Illinois wins a f***ing national championship.

Ok I’m wrong, no problem

1. Oh man so much insight here

2. I'm sorry it's chicken wings I meant to say Garza gets away with not hook and holds.

3. Gee golly because officials and announcers have never collectively been guilty of agreeing and moving on.

I don't know what to tell you on that. Damonte slapped his shoulder then your player flailed his arms up (like they apparently are taught to do all the time) which resulted in Damonte's arm sliding closer towards his neck/face while he fell backwards.

4. Lol at thinking this is a remotely good attempt at a point. These guys weren't even talking about the game half the time. I'm not remotely interested in their hot takes in between their story times.

You guys blame every loss on the officials it's utterly exhausting.

In the first half, we tried to counteract physical defense and continual holding by attacking the basket, and we just didn't get calls when we drew contact. When the other team gets away with hacking the crap out of you and you're not a physical team, you're probably going to struggle to score.

Second half officiating still allowed a bit too much for my taste, but I thought it was more or less fine.

Not so sure about that. Doesn’t Underwood have a sketchy past?

I could be wrong but I thought something went down with Okla St or Stephen F Austin (?) that made him get out of town at one of those schools.

Yeah, you've got morals alright. Shi**y, sore-loser, resort-to-violence morals.

Not only was the other team hacking and not getting called but Iowa was literally not touching Illinois and getting called. That call on jbo right before the half was a travesty. And don't get me started on the travels... apparently if you have Illinois on your jersey dribbling is optional.

They could, but Baylor put them away pretty easily. Illini have improved, but they only have one Kofi. Any game. the refs can put Kofi on bench they are beatable.

I don't think it is guaranteed B1G gets 1 or 2 teams to Final4. If Livers is out, then Michigan is beatable.
Baylor got put away by Oklahoma State pretty easily. Illinois can beat Baylor.
Any given day just about any team in the tourney can go down.
Gonzaga would not be unbeaten in the big, probably have 3-4 losses.

I don't know the rule, but it looked like a foul. The rules expert said they would be looking for contact with the head. I didn't see any. The announcer said it was the extension of the arm that got him.
i Believe the rule is contact to the head or neck area. Maybe I am wrong on that. Either way he ended up hitting Connor in the head at the end of the play

Cockburn manhandled Iowa.. I thought he committed about 32 offensive fouls but they weren’t calling those that way so we saw him dunk at will.. and all i could do was dream Iowa had anyone that could match his physicality.. with the way that game was officiated Iowa didn’t stand a chance. Bigger, Stronger, faster vs Iowa’s starting 5.. was also thinking Fran was gonna go to that line up he used to get Iowa back in the game he used in the previous Illinois game that brought Iowa back into the game BUT NOPE! stuck with his core mostly and it turned out just like the last 3 games!

He did need to stick with Perkins, Toussaint and Murray more in the 2nd half and even get Ulis in there.

But this is also the reason why losing Nunge for the year hurts so much.

Dumb take

I think Garza could have been just as effective as Jack making outside shots against Cock Burn but I also think Cockstain could have snapped JN in half too on one mistimed switch or rotation trying to defend one of those damn near rim breakers he was throwing down.. mighta have been nice to have him chasing Jack around thou..all this just makes me think Iowa need some, what is this thread calling them?? “thugs” too.. Or maybe just some really hard nosed, gritty, physical minded, ball players..

We were within 5 late even with the bs refs.
Our boyz played their hearts out but if you did not think IL was in control much of that game then we definitely have different viewpoints...yeah, I get the (lack of) foul calling on them was ridiculous. I would imagine most neutral observers would say that IL team would probably beat Iowa 8 out 10 times. No shame in that, they are loaded to the tilt this season...Having said that, The Dance/NC is there for the taking, I am definitely not going to rule Iowa out.

Iowa should have been shooting free throws 10 minutes in of each half. Get bent

I think the biggest problem with officiating is that they are making calls based on what they assume happened because they are not in position to make the correct call. A prime example was the call on jbo before half. The ref was way behind the play and couldn’t see it at all and called a foul on a clean strip. I think this really hurts us a lot because we aren’t as athletic of a team so we aren’t getting a lot of calls other teams are getting. I hope the officiating is better in the tournament and I wish they would add a few more refs for the games to try and make it better.

Think a lot of fans on here need to re-evaluate referring to opposing players as "thugs". Not a great look for our fan base.
I’m with you but since that was the noun being tossed around here all willy nilly I used it as well in my post to say those kids that are being called “thugs” took it to Iowa because we lacked the players that could match that style of play.. Then started to cry about officiating..
