Illinois is better. But the big ten refs come on

Everybody has their own perspective but from and Illinois fan I think the amount of hooks Garza gets away with (it's a lot) is fairly annoying.

But as biased fans we are all looking at what the other team gets away with (including me) and not what our team gets away with.

Another hot take that won't gain any likes is that Damonte Williams plays too edgy and loses his cool too often but the contact that was made was not above the shoulders on that flagrant.

That's how 99.9% of Illinois fans will see it and 99.9% of Iowa fans will say it was clear cut.

I agree. Fans only see one side of it.

Iowas guards are slow and they think every time an Iowa player can't turn the corner or loses the ball its a foul.

The reffs could call a foul every play if they wanted too but thats just not the way the game is called.

There is some truth to this but Illinois was aggressively grabbing around screens today. I don’t know why we don’t do it back. Fran refuses to get dirty in the BIG when refs call games this way. It’s time to stop bitching about it and play to the style being played.

That said the Big Ten season is over. First couple rounds going to feel like we are skating with freedom of movement back in the game. I’ll be curious how ILL fairs. They are talented enough to win in both styles of games.

A few thoughts:

Illinois has a good basketball team, so does Iowa.

When the wrong set of officials is assigned to Illinois we’ll see if they can adjust to it. I know Iowa can, so I’m not too concerned about us.

I see the classy Illinois fans upgraded their favorite cheer from “Poo!” (what Illinois usually throws out on to the court) to “Boo!”. Stay classy you Illiniweks!

This is Illinois chance because next year’s team will be strikingly different and not nearly as good. Their fanbase is desperate this year for good reason.

I think the biggest problem with officiating is that they are making calls based on what they assume happened because they are not in position to make the correct call. A prime example was the call on jbo before half. The ref was way behind the play and couldn’t see it at all and called a foul on a clean strip. I think this really hurts us a lot because we aren’t as athletic of a team so we aren’t getting a lot of calls other teams are getting. I hope the officiating is better in the tournament and I wish they would add a few more refs for the games to try and make it better.

You’re blaming the officials for the game when the blame should be placed on Iowa. No question that call against Bohannon at the end of 1H was wrong. It was an anticipatory call. But to blame the refs for the loss isn’t the right thing to do. Joe W disappeared in the second half. The team didn’t pound the ball inside to Luka when they should have. Connor did nothing as usual nor did Frederick.

People talk about fouls...If Iowa (outside of Luka) went to the hoop, there would have been more calls. Illinois scored 54 points in the paint. 54. It’s ridiculous to give up that many points in the paint. You give up that many and you won’t win.

For everyone calling Kofi a thug, just shut up. Dude is strong and plays hard. He’s a very mild mannered kid. No one on Iowa is strong enough to match up with him. Because he outmuscled people it doesn’t make him a thug.

Please show me where I said anything about officiating being why iowa lost. Iowa lost but officiating overall sucks, which is all I was talking about.

Why are you arguing it if you don't care?.........

And like I said, the replay on the monitor showed the angle facing the hoop. The baseline shot showed McCaffrey getting hit in the face, clear as day.

I'm not lying to you, either. Again, deal with it.

Was more like sternum area from what I saw, but was a pretty blatant fore arm shiver. I dont know if it was to the letter of the law but if that type of play is legal then that is a problem.

Yes both team are well coached Illinois just has more talent and athletes.

As for next year, when Kofi comes back to run it again with Belo, Miller and Nimari Burnett, well....we'll see.

Not Iowa's best game by a long shot. Some of that was due to Illinois defense. But I still believe these teams are pretty evenly matched. First game was down to the wire. I believe Iowa will especially benefit from some extended rest and recovery given the injuries to Weezy and CJF. Time will tell as we had into the dance. I believe Illinois will go far, I would predict Final 4. I think Iowa makes at least Elite 8.

Illannoy is not going to be able to play as physical in the dance as they did today. They will get called for a hell of a lot of fouls. Still, there aren't a lot of teams who can stay with their talent, so they have a really good chance of making a deep run.

I agree that was a bad call, but it was 1 of 10 bad calls that went Iowa’s way. Outside of the flagrant foul you mentioned, the officiating heavily favored Illinois.

We were dumping the ball down to Kofi nonstop while you guys were jacking 3s.

You guys shot nearly 33% more from 3 and had 3 less offensive rebounds and we shot a whole 6 more free throws and you act like those numbers are daunting.

Did you watch the game? Your kids allowed to play grab ass virtually everytime down the floor, yet a quick whistle on Iowa for bumping a wrist on a traveling (insertANYIlliniguardhere).

Gets old & you become numb to the way the league calls the games. Fortunately, I think reality evens out in the tournament - tournament that matters.

This post shows what a dumb homer you are.

They review hook and holds if Garza gets away A LOT as you say. Why is not reviewed as they review way too much nowadays? Since your are dumb I will answer it for you. It is because he doesn’t do it.

Now on the flagrant one. All three announcers plus the retired ref they went to ALL called it a flagrant.

Also re watch the game ans see how manny times the announcers who are neutral parties say Illinois got away with steps or a travel or a push off or a foul. Then count how many times they say Iowa got away with something.

But congrats to Illinois you finally have a good team and you did not have to pay recruits and cheat.
A hook isn’t a hook and hold. Imagine calling someone dumb when you are completely ignorant.

First of all, Illinois is 22-6 and has played under all kinds of officials. You’re seriously reducing our team’s upside to needing some specific kind of crew?? Lol. Also, total BS. You wouldn’t take the young talent Illinois has? To act like this is some last chance for great teams with Underwood seems wishful, IMO.

That’s just it though, they need to call it the right way and things will get cleaned up really quick. The Big12 & ACC title games look dramatically different than rugby on hardwood.

I agree in theory, especially the grabbing on screens.

College officiating is just a mess though.

In order to clean it up everyone has to be on the same page from the get go and thats never going to happen when all these guys are independent contractors.

To many coaches in the big ten want to play that way and the reffs just don't have the stomach to call a foul every time.

The only way they would is if they have to answer to someone in charge who is dictating it to them.

Easy to get open when you can lower your shoulder and just slam him off his feet, that's a Kofi play. CJ had three drives on which he was obviously fouled with no calls. Garza was fouled many times and it wasn't called.

The one sided, especially in the first half, officiating may not have been dispositive of the outcome but it certainly made it that much easier for Illinois to play defense.

This has been a common complaint about the B!G Ten for 40 years. Its not just Iowa or other people in the Big Ten talking about it. If the B!g Ten wanted different officiating they would have it. Back when Minnesota and Wisconsin, mid 90s, started talking about legal action the officiating improved. It is not as bad as it was 30 years ago but it still very incompetent and unfair.

You can't control the refs but you can control your substitutions and lineup. I'm tired of the CMAC shit show. We get another year of it too.
With our luck he'll use his covid redshirt and bless us with 2 more years. Expecting to beat elite talent with our #30 handicap is an exercise in futility

I really don’t understand why that’s not a offensive foul.

Illinois is going to be in trouble in the NCAA tournament when the refs call all the traveling, three seconds in the lane, and all the fouling.
In Cloyd’s video of the Drake/UCLA semi-final game in 1969, the refs called “3 seconds” twice...once on both teams....since then, I don’t think it has ever been called in college. “All the fouling” is really subjective...it is a foul when the ref blows the whistle...either the ref blows the whistle all game long and BB becomes a FT contest or you let the game be played as it is now. Can you imagine if FB decided to call all the holding and pass interference that occurs, how much longer a FB game would take to play..and how boring the game would become?

Maybe I’m wrong but if Curbelo was a Hawkeye I think you’d think he was the best guard in the country and the Hawks were destined to win it all, which they might or might not. Jbo is a better long range marksman so you lose that but you get a terrific ball handler distributor and dare I say it a much faster guard. Regardless I love all Bohannan has brought
Curbelo and Davison... two pretty good and aggressive defensive talents..and both make big plays.

With respect towards all and disrespect towards none....when watching Iowa play Illinois this year, I had the feeling that he Illinois’ guards can steal the ball from us any time they wanted...they see #3 dribbling the ball up the floor, and their guards look to the Illinois bench and ask..” Hey Coach...can we steal the ball this time?”
Their aggressive guard play, their BIG guy(s) in the middle and their wing players ability to hit shots from the corners make Illinois a very good team...not invincible but a tough nut to crack.

Teams would clean up their act if the above were to happen.
I think a study of defenses over the past. 50 years or so would indicate this is not the case....like football, the players are bigger, faster, stronger, more aggressive and better coached as the years pass on and “ contact” is a result of this progression...
Just wait and see what happens next season when “ home crowds” are reintroduced to the equation..it will be interesting then.

Da'Monte's arm wasn't close to the head region on the replay. The announcer said it was the extension of the arm that was bad. I don't know the rule and don't care either way.
It doesn't need to be to be a flagrant. He deliberately punched him and should have been ejected.

That's fair, not sure it was Illinois' best either at least as far as shooting goes. Only 3-15 from 3 and most of those were wide open looks. Maybe we'll have a 3rd game back in the same venue.

Love when jbo was sitting on the floor getting punched in the head and the result is a steal and runout for a basket. Literally punched in the head two or three times in front of the ref....no call. Illinois players should have been ejected there as well.

To show how much the game has changed during the 80s to mid 90s fouling multiple players on both sides was common place. It’s such a rare occurrence now, MSU/Izzo and Wisconsin spread this disease.

We know it’s going to be called this way, at some point you have to accept it and do the same shit. Our team isn’t especially built for the Big Yen, let’s see how the tourney goes.

Oh the whining is so tiresome. Basketball refereeing is like an umpires strike zone. If your team doesn’t adjust, that’s a deficiency on your team. Frankly, team lacks the ability to play physically as a whole since many are not athletic enough. You have a handful of guys that aren’t significant pieces at this point who can, but JBo and Wieskamp aren’t built for it. Garza can play physically, but he’s not a good defender on the whole. That’s your issue.

The reffing is never good, but it’s a bit like complaining about the weather-we all endure it and have no control over it. What you shouldn’t do is expect it to be sunny when you see it’s raining out, not bring an umbrella, and bitch that it’s raining. Put on your big boy pants and raincoat next time. The refs didn’t decide this game.

Only ask that they call it the way the game is supposed to be called. See what happens from there. Which I still believe Illinois wins, just a lot tighter.
