One of them is 6' 4" and the other maybe 6' 2". They got a taste of it last year and hoping they break out in spring and fall camps, get a lot of reps in the summer with the QBs and have great seasons. The hawks need the passing game to at least get to 180 yds/game, get big chain moving catches, and make some deep catches to back off the opposing Dee.

I have not heard of their 40 times so does anyone know those times?

With the loss of KJ2 and the addition of Gronowski, I'm willing to bet that Lester will run a lot more passing plays this year. He was limited by bad QBs, but made up for it with a generational RB. We'll have to mix things up a little now that we have someone as accurate and experienced as Gronowski. We can only hope the WRs step up.

When was the last time that Iowa broke from their 50/50 run pass balance ?

Iowa doesn’t get blown out a lot, except when they play the top teams….so overall every Iowa game is played in the mud and we’ll continue to see 20-25 carries, and 15-25 passes

The 50/50 run pass balance is a proven winner and the hardest offense to stop if you are really able to do it.

Not arguing against it in theory, it’s more the way Kirk seems attached to it no matter the situation.

It does seem like no matter who the OC, there’s multiple games where we seem to abandon one or the other for no logical reason.

We could march down the field running the ball or passing, get into the RZ, and we decide that’s when to switch.

I would like to see us get to the point of having 65-70 offensive plays a game. That means the defense is stopping the other team most often and our offense is clicking. I dont care what the run-pass play calling ratio is because sometimes if you can run the ball down the other teams throat then you can also get big chunks in the passing game with fewer pass plays.

I might have to agree with this. I see RSV, Anderson, and Phillips as the most likely top pass catchers of the WR group this year. I don't know that Iowa has had a 4th WR catch at least 10 passes since Kirk arrived.
Gill and Wetjen as well. Ostrenga and Ortwerth are also going to need targets. Probably gonna have to be some injuries for Buie and Howard to break out this year.

When was the last time? Just last year. We only avg'd 20 passing attempts per game, but 40 rushing attempts. So we were a 67/33 split last year. I'm guessing we get closer to 28ish passing attempts and 35 rushing attempts next year, which would be more of a 55/45 split, which is honestly where I think Lester would like to be.

Oh geez. Forgot about those 2 coming back. Especially Gill. That makes it even less likely that either Dayton or Bouie has any meaningful production this year.
Not sure about Howard but I would confidently bet the Over on Bouie O/U 10. Yeah there will likely be games where he doesn’t record a reception but there will be several where he has 3-4 receptions (he had 3 catches in the bowl game). Granowski is not Petras.

Possibly, but the 3 receivers I mentioned weren't around to play that day. Its likely that if they were he doesn't see the field. Take that game out and he had a total of 6 catches for the season. We'll have to see what the depth chart looks like in the fall. If he's starting then he's got a great shot. If not it's pretty unlikely.

I don’t know their 40 times but I would guess that if they were fast at that size they would not be at Iowa.

Given the focus on TEs in the passing game, I get the skepticism, but it happened in 2021 (Ragaini, Bruce, Jones, and Johnson). I didn't go back to check any further, but it probably hasn't happened often.

I noticed Howard in warmups before the Washington game last season. He looked like a big-time receiver: quickness, hands, speed. I would agree that he and several others have great potential. Get 'em coached up and make sure the QB can get 'em the ball, and the Iowa passing attack could be a huge surprise this season.

I don't know about Howard and Buie, but Wetjen and Kaleb Brown got limited snaps last season because they apparently had trouble learning their assignments (e.g., running the wrong route). Gill and VanderZee, however, were able to pick things up more quickly despite missing spring practice. Howard and Buie definitely flashed last year during limited snaps. Hopefully, the additional time with Lester translates into more opportunity and better production in 2025.

Which means we either have the dumbest WR in the country or the most complex offensive route trees for a second straight OC

Every other school goes thru coaching changes and scheme changes and we rarely hear this excuse.

Bring back the KOK route tree. We seemed to have more success with getting open, and anyone being able to play

Gill and VanderZee picked things up right away during fall practice, and VanderZee was a true frosh making a position change from QB. That makes it sound less like complexity and more like guys are either dim or unfocused.
