Indy fan ratio

Was listening to KGYM in Cedar Rapids just a bit ago, and they mentioned that as they were in an elevator @ their hotel a BTN employee said, "I feel sorry for the Michigan State fans." Thought is was like a 12:1 ratio.

Doubt it will stay that way, but should be a hoot and hollar in downtown Indy tonight!

Cheers,

Drinkin Buddy

Yea, that headstart on tickets really hurt MSU fans. There just are NOT many tickets available to purchase! Most State fans head down to Indy on gameday though because it is a short drive so MSU will be represented. It will probably 40K Iowa - 27K MSU....ish

Without a doubt the week head start helped Iowa. But MSU fans aren't a great traveling base. Yeah they show up in mass for a Rose Bowl. I remember going to MSU in 09 and their fans making comments abut how Iowa travels well. In a snide way like it was some sort of put down.

Iowa fans have been starving for the team to be playing at this level since '09 so you get a ton of Iowa fans in Indy.

Sometimes it can be deceiving if the opposing team is closer and will be coming in at the last minute. The year that Iowa played Texas in the Alamo Bowl it was about a 10:1 ratio of Iowa fans to Texas fans in the days leading up to the game. Then on game day Texas fans poured in from Austin and Hawkeye fans were clearly outnumbered when the game started.
That said, I think there will still be more Iowa fans in attendance at 7:17pm CST.

Detroit is a 4 hour drive, its not next door like you make it seem.

There are probably a few elements at play here.
1) As mentioned, the headstart Iowa fans had in buying tickets having clinched a week earlier.
2) Our first time vs. their third...they may not be coming in a day or two early like they might have a few years ago when it was their first time as well. Iowa fans want to soak up all the pre-game atmosphere, whereas MSU fans might not be QUITE as into that part of it now.
3) This is just conjecture on Doodle's part, but could it be that MSU fanbase in general feels confident enough about this game that they are saving their travel time and dollars for the subsequent game(s)? Not every fan can afford multiple trips, and they may think this one is more of a "sure thing" than the next one, so they'll take a calculated risk by missing this one in order to ensure they have the wherewithal to travel to the following game(s).

Whatever the case, by game time Doodle expects there to be no shortage of MSU fans. They just may not be quite as plentiful as the Iowa fans who have spent the past 5 years wandering in the 8-5 desert, desperately seeking the Big Ten Championship Game oasis.

Same thing happened in the Alamo Bowl against Texas Tech, early 2000's maybe - I can't remember the year. It was black and gold everywhere on the river walk in the days leading up to the game. On the morning of the game, there were red-cladded Red Raider fans everywhere, with all of them holding up their finger guns.

Our plane-load of about 100 people from Chicago had about 30 Iowa fans and 1 couple with MSU shirts on

"According to Stub Hub, ticket sales for #B1GFCG are up 386% year over year; 30% of sales are from Iowa, 24% from Michigan, 12% from Illinois"

Chicago is the city that probably has the highest volume of Iowa/MSU alums living in it under the age of 40.

My facebook page has several people complaining about all the Iowa fans on I-74. Well, not all complaining. Just the ones that went to Illinois.

Michigan State sold their full ticket allotment ... so that ratio will probably swing over to something more akin to a 2:1 ratio. All the same, Iowa fans could still "double" them.

And you pulled that out of your ass? I guarantee you there'll be waaaaay more Iowa fans there. You obviously aren't at Indy or you wouldn't open your cake hole.

I'm just going by fan base size, bowl attendance, home attendance, income levels, etc. Nothing more. Nothing less.

Flint you must be way smarter than I because what you just said made no sense in tomorrows attendance. So are we playing in a bowl tomorrow? If so how much money should've we brought to Indy?

Income levels? I have been in East Lansing, have you visited Iowa City? Our homeless are better off than your lower class. Iowa City is a recession proof city of excess.

I was comparing Iowa City to East Lansing...nothing else. I visit your state frequently, I am well aware of how much better it is than Iowa.

HAHAHAHAHAHA. Not saying Michigan is the Mecca of American culture but you seriously need to get out of Iowa.

You do realize that 35% of our student body is from the Chicago area but the more majority of the real fan base are native Iowan that live all over the country.

Judging from the bar/downtown scene, it's probably 100-1 Iowa fans right now and that's being generous to MSU.

GO HAWKS!!!!!

Walking around downtown, we saw hundreds or thousands of Hawk fans and maybe 10 MSU fans. Not an exaggeration.

Honestly, we thought "oh, they must have had certain bars in a different district cater to MSU fans"

but no, their welcome party was at the Slippery Noodle. Walked past there half hour ago and even that place had Hawk fans coming out the door.
