Iowa -4 vs Cincy

Should be 8. I truly believe this is the year of grit and mental toughness. We will lose some, but will win against teams we shouldn't on paper by keeping it close and winning at the line and in the paint. The one thing is while I hate the fact 3 guys who were key are gone and we are razor thin, everyone of the 8 or so that will play will grow immensely. We will be better for this. Doesn't take away this sucks and JBo doesn't deserve to have to deal with it but at least now it will be dealt with and he likely will be back to be a cold blooded assassin on the court, especially late. What an opportunity for Toussaint. He has the autobahn now to shine. He may break the autobahn speed limit. Watch him grow. We will be fine this year so long as no further major injuries. And man we could win the BIG next year if everyone is back. That would be the 1st time since Alford promised the world we can legitimately say that.

Could be close. I hope that after the long hiatus that we come out with good energy and not be flat. Play good defense, take good shots, and not turn it over. Also hope Luka recognizes double-teams early and wears the mouth guard. Also would like to see good help defense on the baseline drives.

A lot of truth in this. He's been a contributor but truth is his health and play thus far is not the reason Iowa has been winning games. I do think they will miss some of his leadership and calmness on the floor.
Just a killer to the depth too, foul trouble or someone not able to go, danger zone time.

I love jbo but the stats say he wasn’t adding a lot to this team this year.
His value this year was much more than stats. His presence on the court NEAR the 3 pt line made opposing coaches start screaming.
JT probably adds 2-3 steals on JBo and probably 4pts on drives to the hoop so its not like JT hasn't taken up a bit for JBo but can he or the others still make teams have to play the 3 pt line the same way they did.
JT only needs to hit 1-3 3s per game at a decent % and he will pick up the slack.
It would be nice if RK would let the game come to him just a little bit more and he will be good for 4-6pts more a game.
Cordell just looks like he is still fighting his body to get it to do what he wants. I think the drive is still there but like us old men its hard to do the things you used to with ease.

I’m worried our depth will hurt us because of foul trouble. Cumberland is a foul generating machine. When their offense stalls, he takes the ball to the hoop, it doesn’t matter who or what’s in his way. Sometimes it’s a charge, often times not.

Not true. Gesell, Uthoff, Clemmons, Woody had a chance to win it all. And they came darn close.

That noted, I think we have an excellent chance to be in the Top 3 of the B1G for the next 3+ years. With a VERY good chance to win it all.

This is going to be a fun ride. Enjoy!

Go Hawks!

10 assists and zero turnovers against ISU say you are wrong. Plus, he is our best freethrow shooter and the main ballhandler in tight games because other teams don't want to foul him. If that isn't effecting the games then........
Agree that Iowa will miss JBo’s handle, calm presence, and at least perceived threat (this year) from the perimeter. The way he handled ISU pressure towards the end of that game was a thing of beauty.

It's just not the loss of Bohannan, Nunge, or Patrick, but the lack of offensive production from Pemsl, Evelyn, and Till that is discerning.
Fran and his staff are going to be tested every game from here on out to push the right buttons going forward.
Iowa has a very talented starting lineup but they can't be counted on to play every single minute and we all know how Fran loves him some hockey line changes. We'll see starting tomorrow if Fran tries to keep at least 2 scorers on the court at all times.
Playing Evelyn, Pemsl, Till, Kriener, and Toussaint on the floor at the same time will be interesting going forward, it worked OK during the Iowa St game hopefully it won't cost us in the future.

Am I losing my mind or is this some inside joke about his assists vs ISU?
I agree though. He is a very underrated ball handler. Plus huge balls.

The 10 assist game was at home against Minnesota.

This will be a different team without Jordan. When things got weird he would take the ball with confidence. He would reset or try something different. The general on the court if you will. Will be interesting against the moving trees Cincy has. We are going to have to be Sonic the hedge hog against these guys! Not our style by miles. Fran knows this and will have to adapt. Big game for him.

Fredrick, Wieskamp, Connor, Toussaint, and Garza and even Kriener can all shoot free throws at a respectable rate of 70% and above.
It was quite comforting when Jordan was at the line knowing he was almost automatic, but we should be alright and although his production is going to be missed, that part of Iowa's game should be well represented.

You realize Jordan created his own lanes. Other players skip and jump. Who is going to create?

Hopefully Toussaint, only 9 games into his freshman season but without Jordan to share the load, he will have to grow up fast! The kid has great moxie and with the help of Connor, Wieskamp, Fredrick, and Garza he won't have to do it alone.
I've only seen Cincy 1 time and that was their last game against Tennessee. Their guards try to smother you with pressure and Iowa will not be able to advance the ball over half court without most of the other 4 players touching the ball.
If Iowa is able to avoid turning the ball over and giving up easy layups they should have the advantage.

Just for historical context, I would note again that Iowa's 14-0 Big Ten champions of 1970 played with a SIX-MAN rotation. That team averaged over 100 points per game in conference play long BEFORE the three-point shot.

That was one of the greatest teams in Iowa history, but it had NO depth whatsoever after those six guys.

The current Iowa team is less talented, but barring further serious injuries, an 8-man rotation should be plenty for the Hawkeyes to have an outstanding season. And as some others have noted, Iowa will be developing some young players at the same time. It won't be perfect, but Joe T's upside is huge, and CJ Fredrick is a JBo-type assassin who will now have the opportunity to show it.

Regardless of what happens tonight, I like this team because it has the swagger and attitude and toughness most recent Iowa teams have sorely lacked. That will carry the day over the long haul.

Connor is shooting 90%+ at the line this year. He is strong with the ball and will help fill in for JoBo in shooting FTs at the end of games.

Yep Connor is the money man at the end of games now. I don't think it's reasonable that anyone could replace JB's gigantic testicles and leadership though. Our "run-stopper" all along was and is going to be Garza. When we really need a hoop to quiet a crowd, they're gonna feed him.

With JT getting the bulk of those minutes, I think we'll see that offense decline in terms of efficiency (almost impossible for it not to), but the defense will get better. JT is far superior perimeter defender to a banged up JB, or maybe even a 100% JB.

Ben McGilmer was an outstanding sixth man and if the three was a available then, he could have drained it as much as Downtown Freddie Brown. Another Iowa Alum, Don Nelson was a great sixth man for the Celtics in the 60’s.

Cincy was 7 seed last year. Did they graduate a lot? Not to disparage the Hawks at all, but what’s up it cincy? Their coach left?

Lost a couple of starters but Coach Brannen’s uptempo approach is probably the biggest factor. Sometimes changes like that can jumpstart a team(like when Tom Davis took over at Iowa) or it can have the opposite effect.
