IOWA a #2 Seed, Illinois & Michigan a 1 in Latest (March14) ESPN Bracketology. Jerry Palm: Iowa a 2. Mike DeCoursy: Iowa a 2. Bracket Matrix: Iowa a 2

I just want to add, I'm glad to see Indiana now on the outside looking in. It made me sick to my stomach that they were in the mix for a bid until recently almost entirely based on beating Iowa twice this year. Wish we could have those games back and play them again. Barring a BTT miracle, I'll enjoy the schadenfreude of seeing them miss the NCAA tourney for 5 years in a row, their longest stretch without a tournament bid in nearly 50 years.
Really not sure why they were ever considered in the mix.

Unfortunately, every time IU has been discussed as a possible NCAA Tournament team, the fact they swept #5 in the AP Iowa is brought up.

We are roughly the #6 overall team right now, knocking on the door for a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. A #1 seed, of course, means we don't play Gonzaga, Baylor or Michigan in the Elite 8. Now? If seeds go according to plan, we would play Gonzaga in the Elite 8.

Imagine if we had held on to that 7 point lead with 40 some seconds to go at Minny? Imagine if we had simply split with IU. We would be in such better position to make a run at the Final 4.

On a side note, is IU basketball the equivalent of Nebraska football? It just seems like both are clinging to their past and are desperately trying to get back to the dominant programs that they were.

If we are ranked 5th why do we keep getting shoved into the Gonzaga bracket as the 2 seed if they are the number one overall? Seems like we should be up against the last number one seed

Iowa remains a #2 seed (and 7th best overall team), per Bracket Matrix. So, we are knocking on the door for a #1 seed. Iowa just needs to keep winning and hope that the teams around us who are also vying for a #1 seed lose.

Note also in the chart below that Purdue has moved up to a 4 seed. Wisconsin has dropped to a 7. Purdue is gonna be a problem moving forward.

B1G teams & their projected NCAA Tournament seeds are in the LEFT column below.

Rooting interests: We not only want Illinois & OSU to lose, but check out the teams starting with Alabama, West Virginia, Houston, Villanova, etc in the right hand column; ideally these teams lose, too, this week and next.

March 5, Per Bracket Matrix:

...............................................................1 seed (#1 overall) Gonzaga

This year they are using an S curve for seeding. The committee may run into some issues using a true S curve because it may violate their seeding rules regarding placing the top 4 teams from each conference in the same region if they fall on the 1-4 lines.

Right now, per bracketmatrix.com, both the B1G and Big 12 have 5 teams that fall on the 1-4,lines. It would be impossible to follow the above rule if that’s how the seeding shakes out. Plus there’s this as well:

Teams from the same conference shall not meet prior to the regional final if they played each other three or more times during the regular season and conference tournament.

Teams from the same conference shall not meet prior to the regional semifinals if they played each other twice during the regular season and conference tournament.

Teams from the same conference may play each other as early as the second round if they played no more than once during the regular season and conference tournament.

I was just looking at where the tournament sites were located pre Covid. If Iowa ended up as the best 2 seed, they would have played at Rupp Arena and then likely in Memphis for the Regionals opposite Baylor. There would have been an outside shot at the Target Center, opposite Michigan, but that would have only been done if there were no other choice.

Thanks Fran!! AWESOME INFO!!!!!

Wait!!! A 2 seed???

On Feb 7, this was being discussed!!!!
Well there are always going to be those who can only look into the bottom of the abyss as soon as any thing negative comes our way. We all know people like this on this board as well as in real life. I've said before there is a different mental strength and leadership to this group. They rebounded well from their swoon when they lost 4 of 5, and I think its 95% on these leaders that they took it upon themselves to change this groups attitude toward the defensive end of the floor. Any team can certainly falter in a one and done scenario as will be the case for every game after today, but lets enjoy the ride and what we've witnessed in this most unusual of all college basketball seasons...

Conference tournaments rarely move the needle a ton. That said, Iowa would be in the conversation for a 1 if the path was Wisc/Wisc/Illinois/Michigan
IOWA‘s only path was for Illinois to lose to tOSU and then in 1st round BTT, and for tOSU to lose in 1st round and Iowa to beat MIch in BTT final, Bit now if all goes to seed ,it’s Iowa vs. Baylor

i see some are saying that Iowa can now afford to rest Weezy and if we lose the opening game of the BTT it won't matter (they think we have a 2 seed locked up)

with wvu, FSU, Ohio st and Villanova all losing this weekend really helps. If Houston would’ve lost today would’ve made it even better. But besides Alabama think we are in next best shape for 2 seed and agree even if we lose first game should be ok as long as it’s not to Nebraska if they win the 11/14 and vs Wisconsin which is highly unlikeable.

March 5 Update

Bracket Matrix, which combines MANY bracketologists, has Iowa right now as I type a #2 seed & SIXTH best overall team.

Check that out here: http://www.bracketmatrix.com/

According to Joe Lunardi, ESPN:

For those wondering about OK State:
They received a one-year postseason ban by the NCAA infractions committee. The Cowboys appealed, and the NCAA has confirmed that OK State is eligible while the appeal is undecided. That is why many bracketologists are including OK State in their bracket because we are now close enough where a no-decision seems feasible.

Important Dates:

March 14:
The Bracket will be announced (Selection Sunday)

April 5: The NCAA Tournament will conclude

NOTE: All games are going to be bubbled in Indianapolis/the Indianapolis area. The primary adjustment from a normal year is, of course, the playing of the entire NCAA tournament at a single site (in a single region). There is no need to bracket any team away from a regional or subregional it is hosting, or attempt to give teams geographic priority based on their position on the seed list.

Iowa has been no worse than a 4 seed since July 15, when Lunardi's first bracket came out.

3 seed on July 15
1 seed on Dec 15
1 seed on Jan 19
3 seed on Feb 5
4 seed on Feb 9 & 12
3 seed on Feb 16
2 seed on Feb 19, Feb 23
3 seed on Feb 26
2 seed on March 2 & March 5

Lunardi says this about #1 Seed IOWA in his Dec 15 write up:

Concerns about Iowa's defense are pretty much moot if the Hawkeyes continue to average more than 100 points per game. With a quarter of them coming from presumptive Player of the Year Luka Garza, Iowa's short climb to the top line of the bracket was perhaps inevitable. We spent the entire offseason looking for a fourth No. 1 seed to join Gonzaga, Baylor and Villanova. The Hawkeyes clearly belong in that group.

So . . . listening to a podcast last week . . . I believe that it was either Emmert or Leistikow who claimed that a #2 seed Iowa could not be put in the same bracket at either a #1 seed Michigan or a #1 seed Illinois and that it would be "set in stone" that a #2 seed Iowa would be placed in either Gonzaga or Baylor's bracket.

I found this: https://www.cbssports.com/college-b...-a-no-1-seed-heading-into-big-ten-tournament/

Based upon that content, I see that teams from the same conference have to be placed in different regions if they are among the top 4 seeds. So . . . let's say Illinois and Michigan both get #1 seeds. Looks like Iowa and Ohio State will get #2 seeds. Purdue is a #4 seed. In this situation, there are 7 B1G teams seeded either 4th or higher. That means that there is no way that the committee can avoid putting B1G teams in the same bracket.

Here's my question: If they are placing teams through a "S" selection process (i.e. the top #1 seed (1st overall) would get the lowest #2 seed (8th overall), the second #1 seed (2nd overall) would get second #2 seed (7th overall) . . . and Iowa is considered to be either the #6 overall team, then why would Iowa get placed in either Baylor or Gonzaga's bracket? If Iowa is the #3 team and #6 overall and HIGHER seeded than Ohio State (#7 overall), why would it be forced to play in the #1 or #2 overall team's bracket while Purdue (as a #4 seed - anywhere from #13 to #16 overall) is placed in a bracket opposite of Michigan or Illinois? That makes zero sense. Not only do you have the potential (if chalk plays out) of two B1G teams playing BEFORE the regional final but Purdue avoids being a #4 opposite of the top two seeds.

Because this year presents rather unusual circumstances, wouldn't it make more sense to slot Iowa according to the "true" selection process and have them opposite Illinois or Michigan? OSU (again, assuming it plays out) would be the #7 and be slotted in Baylor's region (as the #2). Purdue, as the #4, could be placed in Gonzaga's bracket.

I'm not sure why it makes sense to push Iowa to Baylor's bracket, push OSU to Gonzaga's bracket and then placing Purdue to opposite of either Illinois and/or Michigan. That seems to be rewarding the lower seeded team (Purdue) to the detriment of the higher seeded teams (Iowa/OSU).

That's my $.02.

And, FWIW, I think that Baylor's guards would have a field day against Bohannon and McCaffery. I really don't want to see Iowa in that particular bracket. (Perhaps I'm still suffering from PTSD after making the effort to go to MSG to see the NIT final when it seemed like Baylor was dunking at will and embarrassing Iowa in all aspects of the game).

Purdue, as the 5th selection(4 seed) is exempt from the seeding guidelines. So, yes, they could end up opposite Illinois/Michigan. The committee has been pretty stringent in the past regarding not placing the top 4 from each conference that fall on lines 1-4 in the same region. I don’t expect them to deviate from that.

I went back and re-read the rules and I see where I was misinterpreting them. Strange as it may sound, I'd rather see Iowa be placed in Gonzaga's bracket than Baylor's bracket.
