Iowa Baseball @ B1G Tournament

What a finish to the game. The Iowa contingency was loud and let the team knew they were behind them. I am not going to lie, I thought it wasn't in the cards thru 8 innings. Iowa could not get things going against the OSU lefty. Tyler Peyton did not have his best stuff either today it seemed, he was throwing 86-88 it seemed most of the game. He was hitting 90 during his last two innings, which I know he can throw consistently.

Then in the 9th, the balls started to drop and OSU's back end pitchers imploded.

How about Devin Pickett? Hell of a time for his first career RBI. It was definitely a great day for Iowa Baseball.

It was also Rick Heller's 100th win as Iowa head coach.

According to the radio crew. KXIC Saturday moring and if they win and make the championship game, WMT on Sunday.

THat's correct. Iowa wins one more game they are in the championship. They have to lose twice to not make it. Obviously you want to win once and go to the title game though.

Maybe true with 5-1 we sucked last year, but if it would have been this weekend IN Lincoln ( since we have had to play in IC the last two years) we would have won the series. :p
I haven't followed baseball very closely this year, but looking at the schedule, it looked like Nebby had the benefit of playing a lot of the bottom feeders in the conference.

A lot of teams had that benefit. No offense to Northwestern & Purdue, but they were terrible this year. Purdue was 10-44 (2-22) and is now searching for a coach who had been there forever. Northwestern was 15-38 (7-17) under a first year coach.

Rutgers was the other team in that tier, they had a decent Friday guy in Howie Brey. However, they were not great. I believe Iowa & Illinois were the only teams in the conference that did not have a series against any of those three. The rest all played at least one, two, and some all three.

Iowa earned their tournament bid, I said all year I felt they were a top eight team in the league regardless if their record showed it in the end.

It is Iowa vs Maryland on Saturday.

Maryland is going to be very tough out folks. They have pitching and some pop. Their bullpen has been saved as well. They've had two complete games thrown in the tournament so far. The only good news is we will not see any of their top three rotation. Two of the guys threw 100+ pitches and the other threw 81 earlier today.

I have no idea who Iowa will see, but they do have a lefty that looks like he has started some midweek games and thrown 31 innings this year. Iowa does have trouble with lefties.

Iowa will need to be ready and stay hot. Maryland will be very tough.

In a perfect world, Iowa will get a good outing from Calvin Mathews and Nick Gallagher/Ryan Erickson. If they win, then you start Gallagher or Erickson is the title game OR game two vs Maryland.

Iowa also might need to call upon Cole McDonald our midweek guy to start a game.

3-4 innings from Matthews would be good, then probably Gallagher since the Terps don't hit righties with good secondary stuff.

Radtke is also an option to start if needed.

Sounds like either Hunter or Stiles will get the call for Maryland. Neither have been consistent this season.

Finally got a chance to sit down and get online after todays game. What an awesome ending to an to an otherwise frustrating game. Great crowd, got behind the team and nobody left till the game was won. That place was rocking pretty good in the 9th and 10th. Didn't look like a big crowd but it was loud for how many were there. Living 6 hours from IC, my chances to see the Hawks play ANYTHING close to home are few, so having this in Omaha, just 2 hours from home, is awesome. My 3 boys had such a blast today. I may have them hooked on Hawkeye baseball. Hopefully Heller can keep them a fixture in the tourney.

It looks like Calvin Mathews or Shane Ritter are listed as the probables for the 9am game today. The OSU/Michigan game was suspended in the 2nd inning last night, but they will resume that game at 1pm.

Hawk Fans showing up today. Couldn't make this one but lots of black and gold on the stands. Go Hawks!

So who does Iowa send to the mound tomorrow? I love the fact that team we face MAY have to play possibly 3 games in 2 days. Ohio St and Michigan are finishing a game suspended in the 2nd inning, then the winner plays Mich St. IF Mich St loses to whoever, they play a 3rd game again tomorrow morning to see who plays the Hawks. That kinds of schedule chews up your pitchers!!!

Gonna guess Eldred will start, but who after that dont know. OTOH whoever we play will have tired staff also.

Begins Wednesday in Omaha. Iowa will either be the #7 seed and play at 1pm or the #8 and play at 5pm. If Iowa is the #7 they play the winner of Nebraska/Indiana (today). If they are the #8 they will play Minnesota.

We will know our seed based on the MSU/Maryland outcome. If Maryland wins, Iowa is the #8. If MSU wins then Iowa/Maryland are tied at 12-12 and Iowa wins the tie breaker, so we'd be the #7.

I already have my tickets for Wednesday & Thursday. Here is to hoping I have to buy some for the three days after!

GO HAWKS!!!!! What a team and what a coach!

I'd love to see Mathews start and throw a few innings.

I am sure they would love to get 2-3 innings out of Mathews if possible. Now with that said, I think you're looking at maybe a similar situation like today. Hopefully find a guy (Cole McDonald?) that can give Iowa 2-3 solid innings then go to Ryan Erickson. I don't see Eldred being available for Iowa, he threw 96 pitches on Wednesday.

Iowa should also have Nick Allgeyer, Tyler Radtke, and Zach Daniels available if need be. We could also possibly get some work out of Martsching or Vandermaten too? They each threw 23 and 25 pitches on Friday.

I wonder if McDonald is on the weekend roster (limited to 28 players during conference play).

I think Mathews will start and hand it off to Erickson or Erickson starts all together.

I really have no idea what will happen. Gallagher and Erickson has been better in long relief then when they start it seems. It would be huge if a guy could give Iowa 2-3 innings then we could get 4-6 out of Erickson.

Ohio State beats Michigan. So Ohio State plays Michigan State in the other semifinal. MSU wins once and they are in, OSU would have to win tonight then again at 9am to play Iowa at 1pm.

Likely Matthews will start. 3-innngs would be a good outing for him.

Other than Peyton and Gallagher EVERYONE is available for at least an inning. Eldred, Peyton and now Gallagher going deep into the previous games has set the Hawkeye's bullpen up as well as could be hoped.

Michigan State is hot like Iowa right now, they are hitting the ball well. Not going to lie, MSU scares me as they are playing really well as well.
