Iowa Baseball @ B1G Tournament

In this day and age, you'd really think a coach could just text the bullpen to get someone up rather than using a corded landline. Maybe it is encrytpted or something.

I don't believe coaches are allowed to have any type of communications device with them in the dugouts during games

Too many 2 strike hits. All of the sudden, Ohio State passing on balls and swinging at strikes left over the plate. Fk Ohio State for being try hards.

Figures that we would come up juuussst short. Seems to be a recurring thing these days. Why ever it is that this keeps happening, it needs to knock it the f*** off starting now. You're welcome.

Fwiw, it is what it is but Ohio State, essentially, was given two chances to beat us once while we needed to beat them twice in order to win the championship. Big Ten might wanna rethink that or f***ing get rid of their lying excuse for a double elimination format. But yeah yeah we should've just won and all that garbage.

fun to watch them this week. Heller will be kicking himself for a while for not sending the runner in the 8th. Maybe he gets thrown out, maybe he doesn't, but with 2 outs you have to make them make a play there.

with that one second-guess out of the way (easy to do I know), I love what he has done with the Hawks and look forward to watching them in the future!

Agree. The CWS used to be the same way....and they corrected it by making championship a best of 3 series.

I still would've liked to see Mathews go into the 4th, even if they had to pull him. Why not?......

What a run by the Hawkeyes! It's a shame we couldn't get the W, but Iowa really battled. Mathews was really hitting his stuff, especially his offspeed stuff. It's a shame the shoulder issues did not allow him to go further. Coach Heller said Iowa had to win it in the 8th and I agree with that. However, Iowa got two quick outs in the 9th and OSU hit the double about the only place where they could've got one. Just bad luck I guess. Anyways, it was a fun tournament and Rick Heller is definitely the man for this Iowa program.

Go Hawks!

If I remember right, that was during CBS's brief stint at televising the CWS, and they requested a format where there would be one guaranteed championship game for their pre-selected time slot. Thank goodness the NCAA fixed that mistake pretty quickly.

If the B1G already plans for a possible 15 games, I would think it should be workable within the current format, although probably a bit challenging in a year like this with all the weather interference.

Agreed. And for the record, Doodle wasn't suggestiing best of three for the BTT. But certainly it doesn't seem out of the question to just play out the double elim format all the way to fruition. Essentially this year Iowa and OSU split 1-1....but OSU gets the hardware.

Yep. Only way it would be 2-out of-3 would be if both teams came out of their brackets 3-0, like if Sparty had beaten OSU last night. Under current format, in that scenario the runner-up is GUARANTEED to only have one loss, in a DOUBLE ELIMINATION TOURNAMENT. Not right.

I agree with the "double elimination" concerns. There is essentially no penalty for losing a game outside of having to play one extra game, which isn't as great a penalty as it would seem because a team's best pitchers typically pitch early in the week and are rested enough to throw again in the championship.

Otherwise, I was proud of the Hawks for making the run they did. They absolutely shut down two of the Big Ten's best teams in Minnesota and Maryland, and showed a lot of resilience in both OSU games. For a team that was supposed to have a bit of a rebuilding year this year, they were fantastic down the stretch. Also, credit OSU. They had some nice pitchers and every one of their batters had great speed and hit the ball well.

Can anyone offer a reasonable explanation of why Matthews was pulled? Maybe they just wanted to match the mistake OSU made when we played on Friday?
His arm was about to fall off. He couldn't throw anymore. Felt a pop. Heller said he was crying after 3rd inning. Couldn't go back out.
