We have a lot of talent and I do appreciate what McCaffery has done while
At Iowa but it’s like once every 3 years we get a treat and go to the NCAA Tournament (but one and done) then suffer mediocrity the other years ... time for a change or at least bring in some great defensive coaches who can help them out ..

Iowa has probably 10th - 11th place talent in the Big Ten. If you look at teams like Indiana, Minnesota, and Ohio St they have higher rated recruits then Iowa. I’d be really pissed if I’m their fans. Iowa has such slim margin for error. They have to get better guards if they really want to get to higher level. I love what Bohannon has done this year and realistically he probably has got the ceiling in his potential but tonight he couldn’t even get a shot off. And yes it’s nice to see Moss actially be aggressive and drive but he can’t finish and he just can’t consistently produce anywhere close to what a really good team needs outbif their SG.

For me, Fran has never been close to competing for a Big Ten title in 9 years. The teams he has taken to the NCAA tournament haven’t won more than one game, and didn’t have the potential to do anything above that.

Like the OP said, it’s been mediocrity with Fran during his best years with some bad seasons sprinkled in.

Yes, he has made the NCAA tournament, but was never going to compete or make a run and never has.

Newsflash.........there are no great defensive coaches. No such thing. Good Defense is heart, desire, quickness and athleticism.
Ummmm I'm not sure if you're trying to sound stupid, but that is 100% false. Just go look at the 08 Celtics with Tom Thibs and how dominate they were on defense.

Iowa finishing tied for 3rd and losing all the tiebreakers to actually finish 5th is not the same as actually finishing 3rd. Both happened in exceedingly weak years in the league.

In 9 years, Frans best teams are a couple of 7 seeds that got blown out in the second round of the tournament. One of them was a team that started 4 seniors and a junior, and were ranked in the top 5 in the country at one point in the season. We had another team that was ranked in the top 10 at one point, completely crash and burn down the stretch, only to make the tournament as an 11 seed.

I think if any coach is ever going to consistently win at Iowa, it will be someone who can figure out how to win the ugly games. Play tough defense, and limit turnovers and possessions.

Fran simply doesn’t have the athletes needed to play his style of ball, and he’s too stubborn to adjust to his players strengths. Greg Gard or Matt Painter probably win a few more games with this roster, and have a hell of a lot less embarrassing blowout losses.

Iowa won 10 games in the conference, a GREAT accomplishment. This is the bar coach has set for the team. Be happy with that. Next year with two McCaffery's in the starting lineup, this team will be much better.

Because of his poor recruiting Fran gives the team a very limited window for success.

1) Can't play man defense or contend with it offensively because the guards simply aren't athletic enough. This is not a matter of coaching "better" defense.
2) Good shooters can't get shots because they can't create their own shots and we don't have any guards who can penetrate and kick.
3) Zone works until teams figure out to get a guy to the free throw line or shoot well from 3.
4) The players Fran recruits do not and have not fit his system. No shot blocker, no lock down defender, no slashing wing players or dribble drive guards who can kick or finish.

Because of the above Iowa has little / no chance to compete with mid+ level teams and if they do it's highly likely they lose in the last 5 minutes due to 1, 2, and 3. This means Iowa has to beat up on the mid / lower tier teams in and out of conference which Fran was able to do this season based on a favorable schedule and some late game heroics. Keep in mind TWO wins against NCAA teams this year.

How Fran can be so oblivious to the glaring deficiencies on this team is beyond me. Please don't tell me he tried to get this 4-5 star guy because those are pipe dream offers for a program like Iowa. Look at the guards Buffalo, Wright State, pretty much every MVC team has and tell me Fran can't get guys of that caliber. Hell I would take Keno Davis' guards at Central Michigan. Adding Touissant, Nunge, Pemsl, and PMac isn't going to impact what I mentioned above. As we have seen in the past, playing more guys just means more disconnect.

There is a big difference between MAKING the NCAA
tournament and WINNING games in the NCAA.

This season we lost 6 out of our last 8 games and are
suppose to make the NCAA tournament. We honestly
do not deserve an invite to the Big Dance. We belong
in the NIT

Bottom Line: We might win a game in the NIT but not
in the NCAA

But the coaching has to demand it and manage game time accordingly. No defense or lack of effort then you sit and watch. Demand is the key just like Virginia, Wisconsin, Michigan, etc.

Iowa doesn’t “deserve” anything. No one does. But there is no reason Iowa can’t do better.

The sad thing is....every year in the NCAA there are teams that pull off upsets,and/or make the Sweet 16. Every year there are #10-#12 seeds that “you don’t want to play”. When was the last time anyone said that about Iowa in the BTT or NCAA? It has been a looooong time since Iowa was even a threat to make the Sweet 16, much less go further.

You just don’t hear anyone say “Oh no, we have to play Iowa” when it comes to the BTT or NCAA. When looking at tournament brackets, you never hear the talking heads say “Watch out for Iowa”.

Next year we will start zero McAffery's.

Yeah if everybody is back, Tyler stays, Nunge and Pemsl are dependable health-wise, I wouldn't be surprised if PMac redshirts. I would be shocked if either McCaffery starts a game next year (injuries notwithstanding).

Yes, he has made the NCAA tournament, but was never going to compete or make a run and never has.

I don't agree that none of his teams had potential to make deep runs.

Specifically:
  • 2014 we had a loaded roster (Uthoff came off the bench and Jok hardly played at all) and going into February was ranked in the top 5 of KenPom. That team with Marble, White, Basabe, Olaseni, Gesell, Woodbury, and was Oglesby's one good shooting year (made 40% of his 3s) was likely the best of the Fran-era but fell apart down the stretch. Despite being an 11 seed, they still had all the talent to make a deep run.
  • 2016 we ascended all the way to #1 in the KenPom in January and were ranked in the top 5 in the polls for 3 straight weeks in January & February. Uthoff and Jok were a two-headed monster on offense that year while Gesell, Clemmons, and Woodbury gave us great defense. They started 10-1 and then 11-2 in the Big 10, but finished a disappointing 12-6 in league play.
I don't mean to bring up these seasons as a defense of Fran. Indeed it can actually be an indictment of Fran because both teams collapsed down the stretch by losing virtually every close game. Those two teams were more talented than this year's team.

There were plenty of people that thought Iowa could be dangerous in 2014 and 2016.

Not sure Iowa (or any team) really deserves more success, but yeah they have under achieved.

If you look at JBo's stats versus all the teams above Iowa in the standings, they are anemic. He has feasted off of the bottom of the conference. Realistically, he is a MVC or MAC level guard. He would probably be POY in either conference.

I’m going to assume the B1G coaches who voted him third team all conference feel differently. Just a hunch.

He has put up tremendous numbers and hit crucial late game buckets against the teams below Iowa in the standings. I would suggest mike Daum of South Dakota State or the MVC POY Marques Townes would both make at least 3rd Team all B1G as well.

You have no clue what you are talking about. None

i think you are proving his point . Bo recruited mentally tougher than nails kids with a lot heart and desire , they hated to lose . teaching defense is more about teaching a mindset . until we recruit more athletic players we will struggle . the best thing they could do would be try and copy everything boheim does at syracuse with his zone defense .

How many NCAA appearances will it be with McC when Iowa goes again this year? And how many years had McC been at Iowa? I'll give you a hint - 4/9...that a visit every 2 years and, if you lop off the first 2 years considering the dumpster fire he started with, it is better than that.

Be careful what you wish for, it could get a LOT worse. And I see better things for this team in the next 4 years.

That's absolutely not true.

Good defensive coaches teach and demanded defense.

Do you think it's just a coincidence the same coaches always have best defensive teams?
