Iowa doesn’t look well coached at the moment

Is it the talent dropoff or just adjusting to a new style? But the offense is plodding and passive. I appreciate the attention to D, but yikes JJ seems a bit befuddled right now.
Is it a talent drop off...........do you think???? Obviously yes, you lost the very best college player ever, that (in a couple of weeks) turned into the very best pro player. Yes, there was a talent drop off. But here is the problem. The staff last year chased statistics instead of planning for the future. Most games that we had wrapped up (20-30 point leads) still had starters playing until the last minute instead of rotating some of these good young players that just needed some playing time and CONFIDENCE!!!!!!!!!!! Lisa failed in that transition.

I agree with this and we also lost a pro in Kate Martin and she was like a secondary leader in addition to being a great player.

This team has zero leadership on the floor.

The fact that they are still throwing those over the defender lob passes to the post should be telling us something is wrong.
Those lob passes need to be stopped last week. We suck at passing and AOG can't go get any pass that doesn't land in her hands. It's an automatic turnover. This is looking like an NIT team. AOG and Stuelke in together is a bad combo.

Never have had elite coaching. Clarke made them look good. All she needed was one good player to compete vs South Carolina. She had average players and made them appear to be above average.

My thought exactly. Do we have a single player who wants to take charge in the crunch? That doesn't always mean taking THE shot, but at least making something happen. I don't see a single player who has a 40% chance of making a shot when we need it or at least getting to the line. Makes it really tough if you're behind or in a nail-biter.

Although I didn't see them play last night, this thread seems harsh. The Hawks no longer have the best player in the history of women's basketball, along with with a few other multi-year starters. Now less talented and experienced role players are having to lead the team against good competition. It's a huge transition.

This year is pretty much a rebuild. Yet, they've only lost 4 games to teams with a combined record of 51-10.

I think Jan is the right coach. The future still looks bright.

Didn’t they throw it into the post last year a lot. And hell Monica C was famous for dribbling like 19 times her whole career. So they were clear throwing it into her.

The difference is CC, the offense isn’t wildly different, the execution definitely is !
The key to an effective post pass is it has to happen right away. Any hesitation and it allows the defense to adjust. When Monica got an entry pass from Caitlin, it was quick and on the money. A moments delay and it’s too late. That’s how Monica could catch and shoot. Caitlin set an unachievable bar so it’s probably not fair to compare but they could do better.

I hope Addison Deal comes in with the attitude that this is my team and be the leader. Maybe Guyton will develop this as well?

That seems like a fair observation. The Iowa offense has no rhythm, no flow. Lots of people standing around. I like Jan's use of multiple rotations, but the downside is that there are so many different groups of people on the floor at various times that no one, it seems, knows what to do. I've seen pick-up teams at the rec center that have more continuity in their offense than Iowa has shown most of this season.

Jan needs to use practice to sort things out and then settle on a specific approach offensively. The grab-bag isn't working, especially feeding the post.

Yes and she didn’t play well when she got in 🤷‍♂️ I do know this, I’ve been told in every game thread. We should be playing the freshman more and then we’d be “OK”…🤷‍♂️

Guyton threw it away 4 times in the 1st half
I am guilty, especially about Guyton. Despite playing in front of a handful of people (4,200 "Officially"), Guyton played by far the worst she's played all season. Most freshman need time to adjust. I thought Guyton was ready. Last night showed she wasn't. Will she be ready by the next game? I don't know. The rest of the freshman played poorly too. The whole group looked more lost last night than at any time all season, IMHO. Maybe they've hit a wall and will bounce back soon and take that next step. Or maybe this is it until next season. All of this is what Jan has to figure out.

I think making the 1st quarter substitutions following the quick lead may signal Jensen struggled making a change. No good reason to change things up right there. It seems a lack of commitment to a game plan to go away from what was working (or worse, she doesn't recognize the difference.

If you desperately need 5 pts in the last 20 seconds, and all you can get out of that is a Stuelke 3pt attempt (air-balled btw), there's a coaching issue. Having HS and AOG in the game there is a very questionable choice.

Gonna have to change up the approach on offense mid-season because what they have is...Lucy scoring an occasional basket.

Lucy did run one pick and roll to Hannah. It was a really nice play. Didn't see them try it again.

But yeah, also, easy to recognize Jensen can't shoot the free throws for the players either.
I said the same to my wife. I was surprised at subbing so much so early. Maybe Jan's trying too hard to get everybody playing time. Let the kids settle in before subbing.

I think all that subbing has the opposite effect. It just tells the players how desperate and tight Jan is, and that just filters down through the team.

The one thing I thought we should have done was push tempo. We played at the pace Illinois wanted to play at. They only used 7 players the entire game. We should have tried to were them down. Use our bench. Against Tennessee and Michigan State we shot much better (minus turnovers) than tonight. We were forced to play fast. Things are not so congested and Stuelke and the freshman like to run and you get more open looks and mismatches. I think we could have used this as an advantage last night. In the half court offense we have to think too much and then the pressure is there to get a shot off before the shot clock runs out. I don't know how many times we take a bad shot because we are forced to beat the clock. Everyone is afraid to shoot. This is a game we should have won.

I would agree with most of your comment. Bluder was a good coach but struck gold with CC and it appears she knew when to get out.

Won't be very bright when they end the BIG season with a below .500 record and big question if they even make the NCAA tournament

missed the comment what was said?
I am not sure, but it was shared on this forum that he tweeted something like "he was not happy with Jenson's playing time for his daughter" and then deleted it.

But I am not sure how anyone can be happy with the current "throw it the wall" substituting going on with Iowa women. IMO unless things turn around, she won't be the only one leaving. Again JMO.

Especially considering our half court offense is abysmal. Getting back to up tempo is not going to hurt anything. Any offense designed around feeding AOG is not going to work vs decent teams.

Well, they have 5 freshman on the team and 3 top 80 recruits for next year including a top 10 recruit. Sounds promising to me.

Bluder needs to shoulder part of the blame for sure. After getting CC she didn't do a good job adding additional talent so now they are stuck with upper class role players not getting it done and true freshman who are not ready for prime time.

Totally agree and yes, the half-court offense is horrendous. AOG is probably a great person, but she is a struggling BBall player IMO. In fairness to her though I am quite disappointed in the lack of individual player growth from any of the returnees. What the h*** did they do off-season? The only thing I can ascertain is they lost partial eyesight and decision-making ability. Don't get it.

We did start the game pushing tempo. I was thinking, "Yes, we're finally doing it". Illinois was on their heels; then we made some subs and the rest of the game was back to our old ways. Seems like coaches should recognize this.

Well the what have you done lately kids we have these days it wouldn't surprise me if Iowa falls on their faces this year if we don't lose some of that promise..

Hannah had knee surgery, and didn't touch a ball all summer. She just gets back when Affolter has her knee surgery. So, 2 key returners both missed out on crucial time getting to play with new teammates.

Explain that to me…so if the coach preaches ball security all practice and then the players go out and consistently throw it away. That’s on the coach?

I’d say more likely for 4 years we had one player handle the ball 90% of the time. There isn’t a player on this team who doesn’t consistently throw the ball away.

Maybe she should bench everyone and bring in students for tryouts?
I'm sure that Jan and her staff are preaching the right things, I think the question is where is the accountability? Seniors with the most turnovers, and worst free throw %. I guess we just don't have the players in the upper classes to fix this currently. hopefully the frosh will continue to grow and Deal, Houston ,and Hays will lift this team next season. I find myself wondering where we might be with a healthy athletic 6'2 - 6" 3 inch girl who could play the 3 or 4 and get off the floor. You know someone like Ava Jones in her 2nd full year..
