Iowa doesn’t look well coached at the moment

I think the talent drop off is the problem. Syd's injury has REALLY hampered her and Steulke, while playing well, hasn't made huge strides this year.

Olsen is having to carry a big load at guard with the youth there.

I do think Jan is learning a bit as well about rotations but they aren't giving her a lot to work with given the turnovers and missed free throws.
I don't know that Syd's injury is the issue. She runs the floor well, and looks fine. Her "cleanup" procedure was pretty minor. I think we're seeing the difference in a role player benefiting from playing next to a GREAT player, and having to become a key player herself. Syd plays hard. She still get lots of rebounds, and does the little things. Those things were a big help when that was her role. Now its not. She's just not that skilled. She's off balance attacking the basket. Her jump shot from three is a chest level push shot. Not a repeatable % shot from distance. Watch some replays between her jumper, and CC22's or even Kates. Its just not a really good shot. As for Hannah not making strides, its a square peg in a round hole. She also lacks the skill to play where Jan wants her. She's not a good jump shooter from the mid range or certainly from three. You can see this in her free throw shooting as well. Not good repeatable form. She's an undersized back to the basket post player. She can drive to the hoop one on one, but in traffic she's a turnover waiting to happen.

I kind of wonder too with the upper class how motivated they really are. They have already experienced the highest level of success that they will get in their time with the program.

Well, as I said, all we heard in the off season is, "its our time" like they wanted to show it wasn't all about CC22 and Kate. Well?

Combinations aren't clinking. It seems like there is talent that shows up and disappears. Playing the number of frosh accounts for much of that.

All along I've been concerned about the lack of upperclassman leadership you would expect. Olsen is a veteran, talented but doesn't seem able or willing to take over at the crucial moments, ala Caitlin, Watkins or Hildago.

Maybe it's b/c Jensen doesn't have offense sets to utilize her skill sets, or maybe she is a shooting guard rather than PG. I have been thinking PG and FWD has been our weak areas but until post play improves how can we compete? The missed bunnies are ridiculous. This is lack of assertion and aggression. If Hannah and O'Grady can't hit uncontested layups or shoot above 70% within 5' of the basket put in players that can or will. If you don't have players who can it's time to reevaluate recruiting.

Put in Ava. Let her develop, make her share of mistakes. But 40 minutes of crap ball, losing against marginal teams like Illinois when Iowa has set a high bar is not enjoyable to watch and will tarnish Iowa's image in a hurry. We are trying to maintain a high profile to appeal to top recruits. National rankings are essential to keep programs in front of recruits' eyes.

Interesting point.

Not good sentiment for a program with designs for being a power. Players without a hungry attitude are dime a dozen and fill rosters throughout the NCAA universe. They don't belong at Iowa.

I hope Addison Deal comes in with the attitude that this is my team and be the leader. Maybe Guyton will develop this as well?

The "take over" attitude is exactly what we need. Deal's 5 star rating, the accolades and the fact her HS program in considered among the top 5 in the country all point to her being the real deal. Caitlin came in with that swagger and confidence.

Also had a weird thought that crossed my mind that goes along with this. Since they scored the lowest points in a long time against IL, it crossed my mind that maybe because the crowd size is so low that they're bored or not inspired as much not playing in front of packed houses. CC always packed them in no matter where they went. They're use to getting that extra adrenaline boost to feed off of large crowds in game and when they run out of the locker run and onto the court. Probably not much to this, but just a thought that goes with enthusiasm and motivation to excel.

Iowa scored has had scores of 110, 91, 71, 94, 86, 71, 72, 75, 92, 84, and 80 so evidently they are capable. I doubt the players and coaches including and mainly Jan have now forgotten what's needed. They are in a funk. It happens. Have some patience and some hope.

When you keep throwing the ball away 100 times trying to feed a well guarded post, that is not a funk.

Explain that to me…so if the coach preaches ball security all practice and then the players go out and consistently throw it away. That’s on the coach?

I’d say more likely for 4 years we had one player handle the ball 90% of the time. There isn’t a player on this team who doesn’t consistently throw the ball away.

Maybe she should bench everyone and bring in students for tryouts?
yes--if I am coach and preach ball security and thye cannot fulfill this demand they are on the bench=

if you are turnover machine and we are not able to reduce them in a short while on the bench--not that hard amigo.......

play well and within the system of what we want to do your minutes go up--keep piss pooring around and your minutes go down....

Yeah, I don't agree with that poster either. I think almost all players think there's a chance to go far in the tournament.

The problem is the TO issue isn't limited to just a couple of players....

Yesterday Chad Leistikow tweeted what follows. Note who liked Chad's tweet.

The tweet:

Exactly 3 months ago on @IowaWBB media day, here is what Jan Jensen said about expectations. Feel like this is a good time to revisit this quote (and column, if you wanna read). Link to the column

I do not know that part never seen where the whole team doing it--in my watching games I think JJ needs to have them relearn how to feed the post if she is dead set on it--need to figure angles et such better--
will b interesting as they have a lot of nice pieces but are a lot of loose cannons....

I posted this in the game thread, but the schedule coming up is gonna be rough

I expect a loss against Nebraska and then you have to go out west and take on Oregon and Washington who are pretty good teams as well

2-7 conference start very probable

Yep. 8 straight years of 20+ wins could be at an end, and I think the upper classman are starting to feel the pressure of all this momentum that had been built coming to an end could be their legacy.....

Right now I just hope Addie Deal sill comes. This is not a good look right now. The offensive woes are a red flag. Have they ditched the 'read n react' they've been running for years and gone to something else which the veterans are not comfortable with?
