Iowa drivers are idiots

Think Tim Robinson GIF by NETFLIX

There are stupid drivers everywhere. From the Midwest to the northeast the news is showing cars and trucks in ditches or crushed under semi's. Then there are the stupid people in Florida who drive 10 mph faster weaving in and out of traffic only to be 50 yds ahead of you 10 miles down the road.
They're everywhere.

Very true. I've just witnessed a rapid decline in Iowan's driving abilities

In our defense, there’s a decent chance some of those are travelers on 80/35.

I thought the number of accidents was pretty low with this last storm. Likely because many just opted to avoid the conditions if they could

The funny thing about 80/35 is that it is always the traffic going the opposite way that stops and gawks causing traffic jam

Iowa drivers are bad? lol. Go take a road trip in Texas or Florida. My drive from Miami to Orlando was the worst I've ever seen from people that don't know what they are doing. It was nothing to see people doing well over 100 mph on that stretch. Idiots everywhere.

Well I watched a plow drive straight into a ditch on HWY 6, so there are certainly shitty plow drivers out there as well
I thought most or all snowplows had the electronic road feelers. Was talking to a county plower and he informed me otherwise.

We should probably have a talk about round-abouts.
Round-abouts Are mostly about education for most. They built all of them with no education on how they work to the public.
Especially older people like me. Still don't like them but have learned to deal with them.
I remember couple years back I pulled up to one and a nice older lady stopped in the round-about and waved me to enter.
WTF. She must have missed the statement on Google how to drive in them. Did I say I still don't like them.

What astounds me about them is single lane roundabouts and how way way way way too many drivers violate the ONE rule they need to remember when inside a roundabout.

Don't friggin' stop. That's what it does - it's designed to where you don't friggin' stop!

My new favorite is driving south on 380 from Cedar Rapids and as I am in the right lane getting ready to head east on 80, a dumbass semi driver doesn’t know where he’s going and whips the truck over in front of me before he misses that exit. I swear it happens 2-3 nights a week.

It's section 5.5 of the Iowa driver's manual.

They're everywhere.

My recent Iowa (CR) experience of something similar to this.

I'm driving northbound, left lane, 530pm weekday home from work rush hour traffic - on Edgewood Road right about where LaSalle Middle School is (so, 4 lanes with a middle turning lane used by both north and southbound when applicable).

Busy traffic, lanes clogged but moving - and I'm driving the speed limit because there's literally nowhere to go to gain anything, so everybody is driving the speed limit. A white full sized SUV behind me then gets in the middle turning lane, and proceeds to try to pass me and then merge right back in front of me. Unfortunately there was a southbound vehicle IN the middle lane already, waiting to make their turn.

I had to slam on my brakes to give the idiot enough room to make the pass, or else I get caught up in their head on collision (or, the idiot simply merges into me...whatever, both are bad for me). I resume moving normally and get to the next light at Johnson Avenue...and the idiot is still there, right in front of me. He endangered 3 different vehicles to make a SINGLE CAR PASS that gained him absolutely nothing.

I mean, wtaf.

As many of you know, I'm a school bus driver...lots of daily miles (about a hundred) throughout a big Iowa metro. You'd be amazed at the amount of absolute stupidity I see every goddam day. Stop signs and red lights are my big issue...any more, they seem to be a mere suggestion to far too many drivers, stop signs especially.

There are a ton of drivers in Iowa who dont know how to merge onto 4 lane highways that is for sure, as they just veer on over wthout yielding, and I am sure other rules of the road
They also don’t know that if you have 4 lanes with two lanes traveling in each direction, you don’t have to stop if there is a school bus stopped with its stop sign out if it is going in the opposite direction.

Or emergency vehicles unless they are turning in front of you. Also, add funeral procession to the list. It is nice to see out of respect but not required. There are just a lot of bad and ignorant drivers out there for sure.

DMV's really should do a better job holding drivers accountable about staying up to date on laws and procedures.

A written test every time up for renewal.
This is a sound idea. Just a 10- to 20-question multiple choice test where the person seeking renewal has to correct any mistakes that they make. It could be a very good educational tool to address things that a lot of drivers suck at such as round-abouts, merging, left-lane lounging, etc.

Observations:

People with the “Jesus fish” on their cars -shitty drivers

People with the “Bill Murray in 3D Glasses” stickers - overly aggressive shitty drivers

People with “Coexist” stickers - not necessarily shitty drivers, but typically shitty cars that conk out at inopportune times

People Women with the little stick figure stickers representing their family - not necessarily shitty drivers, but tend to be fvcking with their phones when the light turns green, causing some poor bastard in line to catch a red light he shouldn’t have.

But the worst - people who just fvcking have to be “good samaritans” by holding up traffic to let someone make a left turn. Especially when they’re on the inside lane of a 5-lane street and the guy making the left turn can’t see what’s coming in the outside lane.
