Iowa Hawkeyes being 'dissed' by Espn......surprise

True but it was 10-0 at half.

Wasnt Iowa down 28-0 in the first Q?
Yes...Iowa game was over in 10 minutes. Spartans played a better team as well. As for the Northwestern line...pretty sure expectations were zero for them. Face it...the worst Rose Bowl anyone has ever seen.

that was a generation ago the schedule strength was very suspect last year. we shouldnt be ranked high this early

The weak schedule is a tired argument.

How many teams had easier schedules than ours? I assume all of those teams finished unbeaten as well?

The ESPN FPI was new last year and had Iowa 33rd in their final ranking after running the table in the Big 10 and playing in the Rose Bowl. So, take that index with an Everest- sized pile of salt.

I think that you need to look at some results before questioning it too much. For example what was the score of the Rose Bowl game? It wasn't pretty. Michigan State beat Iowa in a close game for the B10 Championship, but what happened to Michigan State in the playoffs. Total embarrassment.

The ESPN FPI is based on the results of the previous season, the returning players from that season, plus the recruiting results of several years.

I am not a big believer in the FPI to precisely predict the finish in preseason. But it should be reasonable as to the TOP Ten, 11-20 in no particular order. From 20-50, it is probably hully gully w/ #49 sometimes showing up as good as #21 or even better.

I was referring to your comment about preseason ranking based on bowl game. How is ND always overrated. Also the SEC.

There would be about 7-8 SEC teams favored over Iowa and a couple of others would be no worse than 3 point underdogs if that much. ND would also be favored over Iowa. Football games don't always go to the favored teams, but most of the time they do

I would think after last season's overall dismissal my the national pundits, fans wouldn't get too caught up with what anyone outside of the program says. We've heard this song before ... Ignore, ignore, ignore Iowa ... Until finally they are "forced" to talk about the Hawks when we are sitting atop or near the top of the Big 10 West in late October. And then the "experts" will jump on the bandwagon as if they were on it all season long. Nothing new here.

The Clowns over at ESPN, have developed some kind of Football power index in their
Dreams. With basically little or no logic to it, they have IOWA ranked
#35 in their 2016 preseason Power poll.

Espin has become the Worst.............

GO HAWKS :D

They rely heavily on recruiting rankings for their projections and rankings and Iowa was rated in the 50s for 3 of the 5 classes suiting up this year. Not saying it's accurate, just that they do that -- some their on-air experts (or whatever you want to call them) have even admitted that they base a lot of their projections based on recruiting rankings. That's one of the big reasons they always have Ohio State and Alabama ranked in the top 5 every year. It's not entirely without merit, but they do underrate on-field results and fail to reconsider past rankings on guys ranked with 2 stars (5.4 or 5.3). Look at Wadley, a 2-star guy with a 5.2 rating. He's performed more like a 3-star guy at 5.6 (and could wind up performing even higher than that the next two years). That's the main reason their heavy use of "original" rankings leads them to underrate and overrate -- though they aren't WAY off the mark too often.

Yah I have to think Iowa being depantsed, and generally not looking like a D1 team vs Stanford, has a large amount to do with it.

Nebraska was an abysmal team (although heavily slanted towards the defense) for most of last year. We go out and hang a W on a decent UCLA team, and all of sudden people are picking us as Dark Horse playoff contenders.

Its the nature of the beast.

Just take care of business. Doesn't matter where you start. Win all your games and you'll have a chance at the playoff. Say what you want about Iowa's schedule. Strong, weak, conference's fault...doesn't matter. They took care of business and were 3 points away from the playoff. I'm just hoping Nebraska can win 8 this year.

lets be realistic here. our last 4 bowl games epitomize our schedule strength, as we have been beaten up by halftime. the combined scores at half are 98-7!

Okay I am being realistic. Our SOS was not that hard. My point still stands,. How many teams had easier schedules and how many of those teams finished unbeaten? Does zero sound about right to you? If you have bad players, bad coaches and bad systems which many on this board said last year, how can you ever have an easy schedule?

Shit happens and Iowa's last 2 bowl games were awful and there is no denying that.
