Iowa High School State Championships

Ignorant. Their JV squad can beat most varsity squads. They have had kids who wrestled 3 years jv and then get one shot at varsity and place.
Without vast proof regarding how some of the elite kids end up at these top level high school programs, some of it is kids hanging with other top level kids at various tourneys...think Fargo as an example.
Friendships develop and one kid says to the other "Join us at XYZ school".
In youth basketball/baseball, it happens a lot.
Hell, my grandkids have/were approached as early as 7th grade by teammates around Des Moines.
Is it the right way to do thngs???
Everyone makes a decision they feel is in their best interests.
That's the current environment.

tell me about Carlisle.

they graduate most but man, they had a good tourney. really like Jaxon Miller and been on him for quite a while.

hadn't really heard much about Carlisle before though.
Think most of the Carlisle boys and Raccoon river girls are all Ubasa kids. Nothing fancy but it seems like they keep getting better year after year.

It’s high school sports. Not serious bidness. People tend to forget it’s supposed to be about competing, learning, building character, etc. and not about wins and losses or college scholarships.
It still is for vast majority of kids. But there’s a small % of kids that are all in on wrestling, absolutely love the sport and want to be in an environment and culture where they can thrive. Why should you, I or anyone else be the judge and criticize these kids / families for making that decision to immerse themselves in an environment they are drawn to?

Some see the virtue in doing the best you can with what you’re dealt, and the character it builds, while others do not. I never once said there weren’t positives to the other point of view. Quite the opposite,
It’s a big decision to uproot your family and make a move where a kid is unknown and has to make new friends. A lot of uncertainty and risk to it. There’s good lessons in that also and will test and build character.
It is high school sports, not college. That is the difference. Loyalty to the community you were raised and supported in should matter.
Tell that to Mr. Arnold next time you see him.

Come on. That is to train in the Iowa room, where he has committed to wrestle in college, not to make ICH 3A team champs or Gabe a state champ. Not even close to what we are discussing.

Yeah but that’s not what you asked.
Here is what I asked: Is he going to have to put on 50 or 60 pounds to be wrestling and effective against the bigger guys? Or is he going to wrestle 30 to 40 lb lighter than the 285 limit? I'm surprised you had trouble figuring that out, given it was in black and white. Have another Keystone Light sport... your reading comprehension is going to hell.

Your argument is just dumb. Your first assumption is that he has to weight somewhere between 265-275 to be effective against guys that size. It is possible that he can still be effective against guys that size while being under 265 pounds...a lot of guys have done it.

He’s a HS junior who is wrestling 215. It’s not a massive jump for him to put on good weight and wrestle around 250-260 in 2 1/2 years from now if he redshirts.

You think maybe the reasons he came to IC were similar to the reasons he went to Sem?

“It was time for change, and there’s nothing wrong with change, especially when the change is going to be positive and keep moving you forward toward your goal. That’s how I viewed the move to Iowa City.” -GA

Man think of all those disloyal to their community kids that went to Blair, Sem, etc. over the past few decades. Especially the Hawks you cheered for.

When is Southeast Polk going to split into two high schools? Three? Land in Altoona and Pleasant Hill as far as the eye can see, and being developed at a rapid pace.
Good question...they're up to the 4th largest high school in the state right now. I was shocked to see Johnston at 3rd, but they're pretty much landlocked now and don't see tremendous growth there.

This maybe was asked and answered before, so pardon me if it's a repeat. I see Ross is going in the 215 lb weight class. But Okie state has him as a heavyweight recruit. Is he going to have to put on 50 or 60 pounds to be wrestling and effective against the bigger guys? Or is he going to wrestle 30 to 40 lb lighter than the 285 limit?
He is just at as big as Kerkvleit was as a senior with weight and frame. He will be a heavyweight and I don't see him having much trouble getting to 240 to 250. If the shoulder holds up he is going to be very good IMO. His movement and speed capabilities as a heavyweight will be next level and he won't be a part timer.

Guys that appear worthy of keeping an eye on. I excluded people that I know wouldn't go to Iowa.

DeSalvo
Landers
Crosson
Fox

That may have been Ben Keuter’s plan as well. How is that working out to date?

This is an 18 year old kid, nobody knows if he is going to put on weight or not. Granted most freshman put on weight, however it’s not an absolute.

He didn’t assume anything he simply asked if people on this board thought Ross would be more effective putting on weight or could he be perform well not gaining 50-60 pounds.
