Not authoritarian.First teachers could be thrown in jail for going on strike. Now they can be thrown in jail for holding a book. Power has corrupted the Republican party in Iowa. These measures are not just disturbing, they are un American.

And you can't even name any book you find objectionable, but you are not blowing things out of proportion.Exactly. That is book burning according to the op.
This is all something that goes back to a thing that doesn't exist...a boogeyman...now here we are wasting time debating and arguing over a non problem being turned into a problem...because the public is not very bright. The public should have a say in what publicly funded materials are used in schools. I don't think that's unreasonable, in and of itself.
If the schools were promoting material racist material I'm sure the left side of things would be saying the same. There would be public objection and there would have to be some sort of pathway to changing material.
The problem is dealing with idiots and bad ideas while at the same time acknowledging the consideration above as relevant.
Great participation in this thread today, Doobie. All full of faux rage and letting it rip!I believe that is what started this in the first place. There has been other threads about it. So, to answer your question, I can't.
Now, I have a question. Do you think such a book should be in a school library?
This is another reason they are restricting press access to the legislature. They wan't to act in secret.Republican lawmakers really do want Idiocracy to become reality, don't they?
When you fear and belittle an educated, intelligent electorate, it's likely because you know what you are doing is unethical and immoral but don't care.
You're correct. Can you name one book they are trying to burn? And you can't even name any book you find objectionable, but you are not blowing things out of proportion.
The faux rage is the op you Moran. LolGreat participation in this thread today, Doobie. All full of faux rage and letting it rip!
I can name a few books that have been subject to bans, but I'm not the one supporting the legislature's efforts. You're correct. Can you name one book they are trying to burn?
So just making shit up? Ok then.I believe that is what started this in the first place. There has been other threads about it. So, to answer your question, I can't.
Now, I have a question. Do you think such a book should be in a school library?
No, but I wouldnt want a book that graphically depicts oral sex in my son's school library.
I am sure some books is the reason a married couple with degrees are moving out of places like Wright county. They are doing a good job of driving people away. Roughly 2/3rds of Iowa counties saw a decrease in population in the latest census.
Another decade of catering to the far right will surely speed up that decrease.
Are you talking about school boards and the public meeting that they hold in the communities that they exist? Because it sounds likes that's exactly the type of thing you're referring to when you bring up the idea of a mechanism for dealing with a subject similar to deciding what is in a school's library. The public should have a say in what publicly funded materials are used in schools. I don't think that's unreasonable, in and of itself.

I'm not sure I agree with this. Iowa used to have one of the best educational systems in the nation. We were always seen as being on the leading edge of educational opportunities. Now we are sliding towards the bottom. Every year we lose ground educationally.I am sure some books is the reason a married couple with degrees are moving out of places like Wright county.
has nothing to do with jobs they desire and entertainment.
I don’t care how good the schools are, people are not going to stay in rural Iowa in big numbers.
So, because I personally can't name a porn book, there is no such thing? I have to know the title if every book in existence to have an opinion? Duh. Also, I am not the one disapproving the legislature's efforts so I am not the one that has the burden. You are claiming it is book burning yet cannot name one book that is being "burned".I can name a few books that have been subject to bans, but I'm not the one supporting the legislature's efforts.
If you don't know the name of books you find questionable, how are you going to know if your son brings one home from the library? What library book(s) does your son currently have checked out?So, because I personally can't name a porn book, there is no such thing? "I'll know it when I see it!"Can you find pornography in a school in Iowa? Can you define pornography?

Neither of which graphically describe oral sex. In fact, the only thing mentioned in Part-Time Indian is masturbation.Chapman got his tighty-whities in a wad about "The Hate U Give" & "The absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian".

Tell me you didn't read the link without telling me you didn't read it. LolNeither of which graphically describe oral sex. In fact, the only thing mentioned in Part-Time Indian is masturbation.
Also, if you're focusing on the masturbation mention, then you're missing the point of the entire book(which, unsurprisingly, most of these people are).
Tell me you didn't read the link without telling me you didn't read it. Lol
Tell me you only read the first three paragraphs without... well, you get the idea."In a standing-room-only meeting Thursday night in Johnston, Sen. Jake Chapman used a public meeting over two nationally controversial books to ramp up his rhetoric on the topic saying: "I don't know why the school thinks that they're above the law. But I intend to do something about it."
Chapman, an Adel Republican, was one of at least 60 people - including students, parents, and teachers - who packed the district's boardroom Thursday as a seven member committee discussed local couple's complaint about two books used in the districts curriculum.
Committee members said parents Mandy, and Rodney Gilbert complained at the beginning of the school year that bestsellers "The Hate U Give" by Angie Thomas and "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" by Sherman Alexie were inappropriate and obscene "

Did I say that?Wait please tell me you aren't seriously arguing that Chapman doesn't want those books banned?
They have been gone for a long time. Which is just great. We get anything we want or need in rural Iowa for the most part. Nice and peaceful. All I need to do is spend a day in Omaha or Des Moines to realize how good I have it.I am sure some books is the reason a married couple with degrees are moving out of places like Wright county.

I'd like to see the book and read the passage that people find objectional before forming an opinion. Often things get blown out of proportion.
Here's my point. Parents would like to "see the book and read the passage" just like gohawk here and yet somehow the op calls that book burning. It is not.Well maybe articulate your point so we don't have to play 20 questions.

I have no problem with the parents reading the books and forming their own opinions, but that will be a little difficult if the parents don't even know the title. I'm sure any parent would be welcome to visit their schools library to read the books available for students to check out. Here's my point.
