Iowa looking at grad transfer guard from Valpo...

Are you talking about the team that went 30-5 last year and lost to a Final Four team by 1 point in the first round? Too embarrassing, right?

If this doesn't sum up the loser mentality of some in the Iowa fan base, I don't know what does. The fact you got so many likes for pumping up New Mexico St shows just how mediocre the Iowa basketball program has become.

Unbelievable.

Does New Mexico St. play in P5 conference or have an athletic budget that in in top 20 nationally.... $117 million...If N. Mexico St is a powerhouse all it shows is how a dynamic coach can make a difference.

Las Cruces is nice during the winter months.

It’s actually cold as heck for as far south as it is. During the winter there’s this nasty cold blast of air that shoots all the way south from Colorado through the state of New Mexico. I’ve actually been snowed in at Las Cruces on the way home to Tucson.

It will definitely be a bad look to lose another transfer target but this time to a mid-major. However, the point the poster was trying to make is that its understandable why a kid would want to go somewhere he could make the tourney and be a major contributor. Like others have said, he's probably not more than a backup here. Losing DJ Harvey was way worse since he had a legitimate role here and Vandy stinks.

If we lose this guy, I'll be disappointed, but I'm also not going to storm Gary Barta's doorstep with pitchforks and torches like the village people of Frankenstein.

I think this would be a good move for Iowa; he was originally a 3 star when recruited by Nebraska. Had a pretty solid year before he had some injury issues, I think this is a smart move. Either way, its not like we are blowing a scholarship on him when it could be going to someone else, its just going to sit vacant otherwise. Hope he can help out...if he chooses to come that is.

Iowa needs to go after these guys: Quentin Grimes, Jaylen Fisher, Kerry Blackshear. Might as well swing for the fences.

One would think that Fran is going for all of them. They just need to show mutual interest, or enough to get our foot in the door....

If Fran isn't making every effort for all these top players, then something is very wrong. Wish there was a way to find out about that...

Sounds like Blackshear is a Kentucky lean.

If Fisher is healthy, I would love to land him. Grimes was pretty bad last year, especially for a Top 10 kid coming out of HS.

Although the player's profile is unimpressive it's at least slightly encouraging that there is some interest.

Well you do know all transfers are thugs right?

I knew some clown would post this. Funny how you don't understand the difference when Freddie was getting ridiculed when he was bringing in early on guys like White and 2 michigan st guys who were kicked off the team vs guys who are leaving on their own accord due to bball reasons looking for a new school like a guy like Shayock last year or kid from PSU you just got.

Not sure if the saracasm meter is on or not. I apologize if it is said with saracasm. Looking at the offer list for the recent classes Fran has swung for the fences. He's gone all in with a number of highly rated prospects. Landing them is another story.

I don't question Fran and staff's effort. They put in the time seeing guys. That has never been the issue.

Since no one mentioned it, Evelyn’s game is significantly different than Moss’s. When healthy he is much more physical and can score through contact. He has a much better handle and assists the ball well. Bakari is very quick for his size, and gets his shot off quickly. If he chooses Iowa and his ( healthy) game translates to the Big Ten, then I would see it as an underrated fit and would expect some crow eating by clone fans.

And? You fault him for maybe wanting to play for a dynamic coach who just led his team to the NCAA Tournament and conference championship.

Oh yeah I forgot it just wasn't the transfers the entire team were thugs last season.

I hope we get this kid and we need him this year. I'm not counting on him for much. Moss had 50+ teams interested in him and Evelyn had Iowa and New Mexico St. as his top offers along with a few others. Many on this board and in this fan base were not sorry to see Moss go.

I get what you're saying, I hope we get him too. Given the choice of the two, I would rather have Evelyn. We are in dire need of someone with his size, quickness and handles. I just hope he can play solid defense.

Los Cruces is a crap town. However, the scenary is beautiful. I go there almost every march for the Bataan Death March and the weather is always awesome.

Ok. You think what ever you want so you can cry about it later in another thread. No one minus maybe one or 2 called your team a bunch of thugs. Lard and Talley I'm sure some would say so. But nice deflection on your original whining statement that I corrected you on.

thanks for the input. He's an interesting prospect. Iowa needs veteran talent at guard. he looks like a good option.

If we are going to bring in a transfer I want someone who brings something more than backup skills. I'm sure this young man is a good kid but it doesn't he will make an impact. I would love to be wrong about him.
I would agree with you if he were a sit and then play transfer, or if we weren't looking at the possibility of having CMac as our only guard with any experience. The tapes for CJF and JoeT are very promising, but we don't know how they can play against B1G level players until they do. I don't like the changes Fran might have to make to the rotation if he is forced to play JoeW a lot at guard. Normally, I also would like to see starter skills in any transfer, but under the circumstances, I think I would be happy if we can get a solid 10-15 min contributor. I hope the kid wants to prove that he can play successfully in the B1G and he sees a big opportunity for playing time.

I agree. I'm not saying tar and feather Fran.

But I do think the fan base needs to view Iowa basketball as bigger than New Mexico St.

He already played in the B1G ... well, for Nebraska. :)

50 offers is a lot different then 50 teams showing initial interest. That’s just like getting recruited out of HS - a kid might get 50 letters from colleges but only 2 actual offers.

Also, I haven’t seen anyone on here proclaim Evelyn would be “the answer” or be some huge difference-maker. Most people are just hoping he can be a rotational player and provide guard depth (which by the way when Moss left we didn’t know about Bohannon possibly being out for the year, which of course drastically changes the scenario).

Not sure how good this kid is, not great numbers in a pretty B level conference. On the other hand Hawks have only 2 point guards and 2 wing players so depth is a major issue.

Oh I know. I just don't want people to put too much on this kid. If he can give us 10-15 competent minutes a game and score 4-6 points a game and play some defense, I would be thrilled.

If he is healthy he looks like he could contribute more than 15 minutes and 4-6 points, but another guard would be very beneficial.
