Should be a great opportunity to bond and play together vs live competition.

All 3 contests will begin at noon CT (which is 7 p.m. local time).

The 3 games will be played differently than a typical game. The team will be split into three groups of seven (with some overlap) with assistant coaches Sherman Dillard, Matt Gatens and Courtney Eldridge coaching one game with their groups.

Game Times:
Aug. 8 Paris All-Stars Noon (CT)
Aug. 11 Valencia All-Stars Noon (CT)
Aug. 14 Barcelona All-Stars Noon (CT)

the best part about this will be all the practice time they will get out of this trip. before they leave combined with the practice time they will get on the trip.

this will give Fran and the other coaches time to mix and match on different lineups. finding out who play's where and which combinationwork,

with Fran its not so much who starts as its more about who is on the floor at the end of a close game,
will it be a short lineup, tall lineup or just the typical 5 man lineup.

matching up with these teams will be interesting for the coaches to find the best lineup for the upcoming season.

will somebody keep us updated on how they are doing and the starting lineup for each game then the ending lineup at the end?

So, it would appear that if Fran is targeting a late portal addition it will have to happen by mid-July. I wonder if they already factored in airfare and lodging just in case?

12 on scholarship

6 brand new faces

This trip will do a lot of good.

I am just hoping to hear anything about how they are doing. anything after that will be gravey on the potatoes at this point. beggars can't be choosy this early in the season.

I hope he can show all those skills that got him zero decent offers out of high school and zero meaningful minutes at Iowa and zero options when he entered the portal.
never heard about him entering the portal, sounds like a BS lie that you made up. when was he supposed to get those minutes as he was a FR who was RS'ing. last I knew FR in college BB CAN'T play. that just confirms the notion that all you know how to do is make up lies.

He put his name in the portal and as soon as the coaching staff told him they'd be moving on from him if he stayed in he pulled his name out as he knew a walk on wasn't going to get a sniff. It was why he put out a highlight tape. And he RS because he wasn't good enough to play meaningful minutes...you do know that freshman are eligible to play these days, right? Go tell L to wheel you back into a corner give this site a break from your insanity.

Do you have a source on Nimmers being in the portal? I have no memory of that, though I know there was speculation he might do so when the the video was released. But I don’t believe he ever did. I’m happy to view a source indicating otherwise.

My understanding was that Nimmers was injured prior to last season, hence the redshirt. Is this not the case.....

If true there should be a record of it.

That probably wasn't the only reason.

He had zero real offers out of highschool for a reason.

Theres obviously elements to his play that are lacking in some way.

My assumption has been its probably mostly bball IQ which is not an easy thing to fix.

An injury had nothing to do with the redshirt decision.

The wrist injury suffered during preseason camp prevented Nimmers from playing in Iowa's preseason exhibition game and he had his right wrist wrapped while watching from the bench the November 11 win over North Carolina A&T.

***** At the time of the red shirt announcement, Fran said that Nimmers' wrist "is fine." However, by redshirting him, they wanted to:

(1) maintain eligibility for him on the back end; his eligibility does not run out until 2027;

(2) give him a year to get adjusted;

(3) give him a year to learn the system; and

(4) have him continue to develop as a player.

The story from the Quad Cities Times:

Hawkeyes' Nimmers will Redshirt
Steve Batterson
Nov 14, 2022

Amarion Nimmers will redshirt this season for the University of Iowa men's basketball team, a decision that is more about his future than the present.

The freshman walk-on from Rock Island has dealt with a wrist injury in recent weeks but coach Fran McCaffery said Monday the ultimate decision came down to what the 6-foot-2 guard can become as a player as he gains experience.

“It makes no sense for a walk-on to play his first year," McCaffery said. “You look at the track record of Austin Ash, Michael Baer, Darius Stokes, Riley Till, even guys like Kyle Denning who we ended up giving a scholarship to as we did with Austin, you want to maintain that eligibility on the back end, give him a year to get adjusted, to learn the system."

In Nimmers’ case, it also provides him with an opportunity to continue his development as a player.

McCaffery said he sees potential in Nimmers’ game.

“It enables him to take advantage of five years to play four if he wants to. If he wants to graduate, he can, but I think you know when he’s 22 he’ll be a pretty darn good player," McCaffery said.

“It will either be playing here or playing somewhere else. He’ll have options and I think I have the responsibility to make sure he has options."

A wrist injury suffered during preseason camp prevented Nimmers from playing in Iowa's preseason exhibition game and he had his right wrist wrapped while watching Friday's win over North Carolina A&T from a spot on the bench.

McCaffery said Monday that Nimmers' wrist "is fine."

Nimmers chose to take a walk-on opportunity at Iowa after averaging 24.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and two steals per game last season at Rock Island.

The second-leading scorer in the history of the Rocks program to former Stanford guard Chasson Randle, Nimmers led the Western Big 6 Conference in scoring the past two seasons.

With McCaffery in the stands at Rock Island Fieldhouse to watch an opposing team’s player last December, Nimmers established a school single-game scoring record with a 45-point performance last season against Dubuque Hempstead.

I know bashing the kid because he didn't receive any offers out of high school is the in thing to do now a days, but word from a local source informed me he lost his mother after his sophomore year do to a heart attack. Give the kid a break, he's a talented player and just because he was brought on the Iowa roster as a walk on shouldn't hinder his ability to see minutes on the court if he shows McCaffery he deserves playing time. We shall see, one way or another the kid will see time on a court whether at Iowa or somewhere else.

I just recorded a Big Ten Network 3 part series on a 2014 trip to France by the Wisconsin bball team. 30 minutes per episode.

I sure hope they do a series on the Hawks trip this summer. I would love to see a little of what sightseeing they do and a bit of their 3 games.

Other BT teams are traveling, too. Illinois will be in Spain around the same time as Iowa. Too bad they can’t play an exhibition over there and broadcast it on BTN.

"I don’t really need to see what Tony Perkins can do, I know what Tony Perkins can do. I want to find out what other guys can do, and that’s more important.”

With 6 new faces, Fran states he doesn't have his starting line up figured out yet. Iowa gets 10 additional practices to go along with the usual summer workout schedule. As you will read, Fran will be splitting the Hawkeyes into 3 teams of 7 players for the games, with each assistant coach — Matt Gatens, Sherman Dillard, and Courtney Eldridge — working as the head coach for a game.

Good story on what to expect to see during this trip.

Foreign Trip Bonding Time for Hawkeye Hoops

Iowa Heading to France, Spain Next Month

Iowa City, Iowa - Don’t dissect the box scores.

Don’t worry about who got playing time, and who didn’t.

Don’t worry about the final scores.

Iowa’s August men’s basketball trip through Europe has deeper meaning, which is what coach Fran McCaffery wants.

The Hawkeyes will leave August 5 and return 11 days later. They’ll spend four days in Paris, three days in Valencia, Spain, and three days in Barcelona.

Yes, they’ll play three games. The emphasis, McCaffery said, will be on much more than basketball.

“It’s a cultural, educational, team-bonding opportunity,” McCaffery said Thursday. “I’ve been fortunate to do this more than a few times, and the impact is so much more impressive when it comes to the big picture than it is specifically related to basketball. The games themselves are moderately important, to be honest with you. And that’s been a shift.

“In the past, when we would go, we would play it like it’s the Final Four. The last time we went, it was much more relaxed. Get guys playing time, get them confidence, get young guys opportunity. I don’t really need to see what Tony Perkins can do, I know what Tony Perkins can do. I want to find out what other guys can do, and that’s more important.”

McCaffery plans on splitting the Hawkeyes into three teams of seven players for the games, with each assistant coach — Matt Gatens, Sherman Dillard, and Courtney Eldridge — working as the head coach for a game.

“I’m not going to approach every game like, ‘This is my starting lineup,’” McCaffery said. “We don’t have a starting lineup now. So we’ll put three different teams together — seven guys, they’ll play the whole time. We’ll have different combinations — young guys, old guys. I want everybody to go over there and feel like they’ll have an opportunity to play. So if they don’t play today, that means tomorrow they’ll play 30, 35 minutes.”

Iowa gets 10 additional practices to go along with the usual summer workout schedule, and that can be beneficial for a team with six newcomers, including four freshmen.

“We’re fortunate, as freshmen, to have that overseas trip,” said freshman guard Brock Harding. “We get 10 practices, so we can put everything in now, get that put in our heads, so when practice comes in the fall we’ve already got everything put in and then it will be easier for the transition.

“Normally, we wouldn’t put in now what we’ve been putting in,” McCaffery said. “So we’re throwing a lot of stuff at them. And they’ve picked it up really quickly. We’ve got six new players, (including) four freshmen. And they’ve picked everything up amazingly quickly. That’s impressive for me, because a lot of times that takes a while.

“We’re throwing it all at them. It’s pretty involved. Normally we don’t play until November, so we’re not worried about that. But we’re playing in August.”

Harding said the trip will break up a long summer of workouts, especially for the freshmen.

“Coming in here, it’s the first time we haven’t had AAU basketball,” Harding said. “So having games to look forward to in August, that makes the summer grind that much more fun, knowing that we have something to look forward to with the games coming up pretty soon.”

It’s the first trip for the program since the 2017-18 team took a summer trip to Germany, Switzerland, and Italy.

McCaffery has taken veteran teams overseas as well as teams with inexperience, so he knows the value of the opportunities the trip presents.

“We’ve got some pretty veteran guys,” he said. “But this is a young team, a new team. A lot of those six new players are going to play a lot. It has more impact when it’s a young team.”
