IOWA Men heading to Paris & Spain Aug 5-16. Three teams of 7 players for the 3 games. Mulvey won't make the trip (wedding)

On what do you base this assumption?
Because he has nba level athleticism for his size, and shot over %40 from 3 in High-school and yet no big offers.

Thats an insane combo for no one to have offered. You don't need a left hand to play in college if you have those things.

Grades and attitude don't matter anymore, theres always people willing to overlook that.

So all you are left with is that he just doesn't play the game that well...because if he played the game well he'd have scholarship offers.

Why did you change your argument from questioning his “bball IQ” to “he just doesn't play the game that well”?

Nimmers had trouble adjusting to the size and athleticism of the team according to my friend who watches practices. He is stuck between the guard and wing positions. Not a natural for either at this level. I hope he develops.

Press Release:

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa men’s basketball team will play three games when it travels to France and Spain for its 2023 foreign trip. The Hawkeyes depart for Paris on Aug. 5.

The team’s first game will be played Aug. 7, facing off against the Paris All-Stars in Paris. Game two will be in Valencia on Aug. 11 against the Valencia All-Stars and the finale will be played on Aug. 13 in Barcelona against the Barcelona All-Stars.

All three contests will begin at 7 p.m. local time, which will be noon in Iowa City – in Central Standard Time.

The three games will be played differently than a typical game. The team will split the roster into three groups of seven (with some overlap) with assistant coaches Sherman Dillard, Matt Gatens and Courtney Eldridge coaching one game with their groups.

The Hawkeyes will spend four days in Paris (Aug. 6-9), three days in Valencia (Aug. 10-12) and three days in Barcelona (Aug. 13-15).

Looks like PMac will join the team in Barcelona; Chad doesn't seem to think he'll make the final game. The team’s first game will be played Aug. 7 (Paris All-Stars in Paris). Game two will be in Valencia on Aug. 11 (Valencia All-Stars) and the finale will be played on Aug. 13 in Barcelona (Barcelona All-Stars).

"I don’t really need to see what Tony Perkins can do, I know what Tony Perkins can do. I want to find out what other guys can do, and that’s more important.”

With 6 new faces, Fran states he doesn't have his starting line up figured out yet. Iowa gets 10 additional practices to go along with the usual summer workout schedule. As you will read, Fran will be splitting the Hawkeyes into 3 teams of 7 players for the games, with each assistant coach — Matt Gatens, Sherman Dillard, and Courtney Eldridge — working as the head coach for a game.

Good story on what to expect to see during this trip.

Foreign Trip Bonding Time for Hawkeye Hoops

Iowa Heading to France, Spain Next Month

Iowa City, Iowa - Don’t dissect the box scores.

Don’t worry about who got playing time, and who didn’t.

Don’t worry about the final scores.

Iowa’s August men’s basketball trip through Europe has deeper meaning, which is what coach Fran McCaffery wants.

The Hawkeyes will leave August 5 and return 11 days later. They’ll spend four days in Paris, three days in Valencia, Spain, and three days in Barcelona.

Yes, they’ll play three games. The emphasis, McCaffery said, will be on much more than basketball.

“It’s a cultural, educational, team-bonding opportunity,” McCaffery said Thursday. “I’ve been fortunate to do this more than a few times, and the impact is so much more impressive when it comes to the big picture than it is specifically related to basketball. The games themselves are moderately important, to be honest with you. And that’s been a shift.

“In the past, when we would go, we would play it like it’s the Final Four. The last time we went, it was much more relaxed. Get guys playing time, get them confidence, get young guys opportunity. I don’t really need to see what Tony Perkins can do, I know what Tony Perkins can do. I want to find out what other guys can do, and that’s more important.”

McCaffery plans on splitting the Hawkeyes into three teams of seven players for the games, with each assistant coach — Matt Gatens, Sherman Dillard, and Courtney Eldridge — working as the head coach for a game.

“I’m not going to approach every game like, ‘This is my starting lineup,’” McCaffery said. “We don’t have a starting lineup now. So we’ll put three different teams together — seven guys, they’ll play the whole time. We’ll have different combinations — young guys, old guys. I want everybody to go over there and feel like they’ll have an opportunity to play. So if they don’t play today, that means tomorrow they’ll play 30, 35 minutes.”

Iowa gets 10 additional practices to go along with the usual summer workout schedule, and that can be beneficial for a team with six newcomers, including four freshmen.

“We’re fortunate, as freshmen, to have that overseas trip,” said freshman guard Brock Harding. “We get 10 practices, so we can put everything in now, get that put in our heads, so when practice comes in the fall we’ve already got everything put in and then it will be easier for the transition.

“Normally, we wouldn’t put in now what we’ve been putting in,” McCaffery said. “So we’re throwing a lot of stuff at them. And they’ve picked it up really quickly. We’ve got six new players, (including) four freshmen. And they’ve picked everything up amazingly quickly. That’s impressive for me, because a lot of times that takes a while.

“We’re throwing it all at them. It’s pretty involved. Normally we don’t play until November, so we’re not worried about that. But we’re playing in August.”

Harding said the trip will break up a long summer of workouts, especially for the freshmen.

“Coming in here, it’s the first time we haven’t had AAU basketball,” Harding said. “So having games to look forward to in August, that makes the summer grind that much more fun, knowing that we have something to look forward to with the games coming up pretty soon.”

It’s the first trip for the program since the 2017-18 team took a summer trip to Germany, Switzerland, and Italy.

McCaffery has taken veteran teams overseas as well as teams with inexperience, so he knows the value of the opportunities the trip presents.

“We’ve got some pretty veteran guys,” he said. “But this is a young team, a new team. A lot of those six new players are going to play a lot. It has more impact when it’s a young team.”

Did I hear correctly that Patrick M isn’t going on the foreign trip? If so, why not?

At least if Riley Mulvey continues to be the top scholarship bench cheerleader for his 4 years at Iowa, he will come away with a degree from a Big Ten school and have no debt to speak of for the rest of his life. That's worth something....

and it's out of state tuition, too

Story from the new Register beat writer:

One thing I don't get with the Mulvey thing; I could think of lots of last minute/emergency situations that would be perfectly understandable as to why he would stay home. I am struggling to find what exactly a "prior family obligation" would be big enough to miss a trip to Europe with teammates when Riley needs all of the playing time he can get. Sibling getting married? That's about all I could come up with.

Great find. For those who don't open the link, Riley is a groomsman in Taylor Mulvey's wedding in Middletown, CT.

Saturday Aug 12th. If only it was a little closer we could road trip crash it.

He could probably do the Paris part (opposite Patrick), but I’m sure being home with family at this time is important as well. Unfortunate timing for Riley.

I edited my post w/ this: The couple got engaged in 2021 so this wedding has been in the works for a couple years.

So, it sucks that Riley can't make the Europe trip, but it's completely understandable. Sometimes timing just sucks.

Maybe it's wishful thinking but I am hopeful that Riley can give us something this season. The dude is huge.

This is from July 17:

Not saying Riley is egregiously out of line. But I guarantee if it was me I'd be in Europe. Join via zoom or something.

Especially when Riley has previously stated that there have been times when he hasn't put forth the necessary effort and time to produce.

I remember Rick Mount telling a story at an Iowa basketball camp how he skipped his prom night to get in the gym.

It's all about how bad you want something. Especially when your competition is highly motivated. You get back what you put in.

To me, at this point, I question whether Riley wants it bad enough to ever see more than spot minutes.

Hope I am wrong or that a late light turns on for Riley. He obviously has great size. His hands and feet are pretty good. Runs well and moves fluidly. Supposedly is a good passer, but he's going to have to start processing the game a lot more quickly for that skill to be activated

You make good points. I am assuming this is his brother who's getting married; I can see where it would be tough to back out when they got engaged in 2021 and Riley was asked 2 years ago to be a groomsman.

It just sucks all around for Riley; he's gonna miss out big time. What a great free trip, where he not only would bond with teammates, he'd be getting more practice and game time action in.

I am with you; I hope the light turns on soon. But I am not holding my breath.
