Iowa vs GCU

I wish had had seen one game of theirs this year. Would know better how to feel about this game. Must admit I saw some lesser than .500 teams play during the season in some really lower conferences and thought they might give is a run for our money.

Ummm.....sub-.500 teams did give us a run for our money. We lost 3 out of 4 to 12-15 Indiana and 14-15 Minnesota. 😜😁😕😳😒

I’ve watched them a few times this year. My buddy is a ref in the wac so if I’ve got nothing to do I’ll watch their games if he is working it. They basically play 2 centers and their starting five play a good portion of the game (all 5 over 30 minutes) in close games really only 7 guys play any significant minutes. I don’t anticipate any issues. Hopefully Garza gets them in foul trouble and we cruise to an easy win.

Unless the kid was ill (which could be) GCU's big center wears out pretty quickly. I think that Luka will out hustle him and wear him out, foul him out. Their big guy has good hands and can score, but isn't going to keep up with Luka...so, I think we can get secondary break shots when he is in the game. When he's not in the game GCU doesn't have the beef to stop Luka...officiating could be a bid deal in this game.

GCU reminds me of some of the old school disciplined teams...deliberate, minimal mistakes, good shooters...

There's a reason those kids went to Grand Canyon U, and it wasn't that they were 3,4,or 5 star recruits. This is their 1st appearance in this tournament and will be like a deer in headlights.
Garza, Wieskamp, Fredrick, Bohannan, Keegan, Patrick, are far superior then their players and even Connor, Toussaint, Kris,. Tony, Ahron, and Josh can play toe to toe with them.
For those that think it will be a blowout, Fran is our coach, he never tries to embarrass an opposing coach so I'm guessing somewhere between 15 and 25 point spread by the end of the game. Something like 85-68

Anything can happen. That is true. From a quality standpoint, with something like the Pomeroy rankings, GCU (108) is in the same ballpark as Nebraska (95). Nebraska won 3 Big 10 games, took Illinois to OT, beat Rutgers by 21 and had several other conference games that came right down to the wire. So anything from a close GCU win to an Iowa rout is possible.

Having seen GCU play a bit, Iowa would need to play bad and have some other misfortune (such as Garza getting 2 fouls in the first 5 minutes) to not win. They really have no one who can guard Garza. Not many do, but they don't have a Cockburn or a Reuvers/Potter, etc. Iowa's perimeter players will get open looks at 3's. If Iowa shoots close to its season average from 3-point range, it will likely be fine.

Oh just friggin say Iowa will win, so we can all start panicking now, instead of going in with a false sense of confidence, already.............

72-62 Iowa.

Being the first game of the tournament and sitting in hotel rooms just thinking solely about this game will prompt the Hawkeyes to come out of the gate with cold shooting. Then they will calm down and roll to a win.
