Jan is in big trouble. Luckily she's at Iowa so she's got another 14 years to figure it out
Recruiting, recruiting, recruiting. Just look at Maryland—it’s the difference-maker these days. Coaches assemble, coach, and develop players, but at the end of the day, recruiting is everything. But if you miss, it’s a huge setback. You need at least three solid players—two guards and a post—or you’re in trouble. Role players are great, but without consistent scorers, you’re toast.
Iowa needs to bring back the run-and-gun offense. Syd and Hannah thrived in that system with Caitlin—let’s push the pace, run the floor, and find open players in transition.
If we’re going to stick with a half-court offense, we need more off-ball movement—flare screens, down screens, and backdoor cuts to create open looks. Also, it’s time to ditch the lob passes—they’re just not effective. Instead, we should focus on handoffs and interior bounce passes to keep the ball moving and create better scoring opportunities inside.
One big issue I’ve noticed—when O’Grady, Hannah, or Ava get the ball in the post, they’re not looking for the open jump shooter—a huge mistake. When you collapse the defense inside, you have to kick it out to keep them scrambling. Doing this forces defenders to stay in position, which opens up even more opportunities to exploit the interior later in the possession.
