Our orange schedule does not do us any favors. Too many guys on this team wrestle like robots. Stiff and slow, terrible at scrambling. PSU gets all their guys to leave it on the mat. Thank god we can put away the fantasy about hanging with PSU in a dual. 125, 133, 149 and 197 a healthy 285 are the only legit weights we have. Brands better figure out how to peak a team because fading has become all too common. Recruiting a room full of "room" guys is not getting it done.

Minny beat PSU 2 years ago and PSU then crushed them in the NCAAs. Don't get overly negative, it's your only loss of the year. Like Johnstown, I still think Iowa is PSU's #1 threat.

We saw the same thing just last year when Mizzou came into town. A pattern has developed where Iowa runs into B1Gs and Nationals and looks to be in mid season form while everybody else is ready to let it all hang out.
We're still good enough to shit down our leg and end up in the top 2-4, but that isn't the goal.
Count me also as a PSU guy who will say don't give up the ship just yet. Not trolling. I think Iowa will be very tough at B1Gs, where the waters aren't quite as deep as NCAAs and given the fact they are in Iowa. PSU will have to wrestle at the top of their game to win B1Gs and if they don't Iowa will be there. PSU will be a big favorite in NYC, however. But if Iowa gets on a roll at B1Gs, stranger things have happened.

I actually thought it was a great idea to have Ironside call it. I had been wondering why BTN goes with know-nothing student announcers when there's some really good local talent, like Ironside.
I will say, I learned a lot listening to Ironside tonight. He's very honest. Not an Iowa homer, at all, altho' he bleeds black and gold. And he has those championship insights that only the very few who have walked the walk have. Plus from being so close to Gable and the Brands.

I have noticed this as well...but I don't know if it is unique to Iowa or if that goes on with other programs too. But I saw it clearly at least twice tonight and I was sitting about 75 feet from the tunnel.
Honest question...were there Iowa wrestlers in days gone by that blew off Gable...at least immediately following a loss...and if so, what were the consequences, etc?
AND...at least the last two TD's were like pushing over a grandma for Jack. In the end, the team score differential was large enough that one point here or there would not have changed the outcome.
But, Clark did not wrestle for the major, at least in a smart way, and Grothus all but walked off the mat late in the match and gave up a TECH FALL! Jeeezzz.

For the first year of being on here I just read the blog and waited to start posting until just recently. This is the most depressing thread I think I have read except for some of the PSU guys posts. I expected them be really letting us hear it and instead offering the same encouragement we should be giving. The hardest times is when we need to do it the most. I am a Hawkeye that doesn't quit on my team when shit gets tough. Is it hard when guys seem like they are not putting the full effort, absolutely. Unlike a few idiots on here that think we need a coaching change, I trust our coaches have a better grasp of what has to happen more than any of us. BELIEVE!! 1997 every guy met or exceeded their ranking at the NCAA Tournament! Hopefully our wrestlers are believing in themselves even if you are not. I will be at the Big Ten Tournament cheering our guys on believing we can win it! Hopefully Stoll and Brooks are not injured, just hurt. That is my main concern right now.
I appreciate the positive attitude, and I'll be there with you rooting on the Hawks in Iowa City. I don't think fans are giving up, but after tonight's disaster, I think fans have every right to express their disappointment in the pathetic effort we saw in Carver. It was the most un-Iowa-wrestling-like performance I can remember in a dual meet dating back to the Zalesky era. Throw in the fact that Brooks and Stoll very possibly will be less than 100% heading into Big Tens, and you have a massive bummer of an evening. I'd fully expect Hawk fans to be blowing off some steam over this debacle.
While it's fun to reminisce about the 1997 team, the fact that Iowa has underperformed in probably the last 5 NCAA tournaments doesn't give us a lot of hope that they'll flip a switch and revert to the 1997 team's ways, as much as we'd all love to see it. And let's not kid ourselves -- that 1997 team had more horses, and less gaping holes in its lineup, than this team has. Nobody wants the Hawks to overachieve in the post-season more than I do, but I think there's plenty of room for some realism, too.
I enjoy watching great wrestlers, whether Gilman, Dieringer, Gwiz, Retheford or Nickal. I enjoyed the PSU/OSU match more than tonight's match not simply because the Hawks lost, but because I saw better wrestling in the PSU dual.

Hate like heck to write anything that might be even a little positive about the goofers, but PSU hardly crushed them. The Goofs had a lead (4.5 points) going into the finals with 2 in the finals. One of those finalists was a 2 time defending champ. They were goofer for 2, Ruth and Taylor grabbed 2 titles and 9 points, and the Goofs got a nice tee shirt and the Lions a nicer team trophy.
That said. I agree with your point. I also believe the Hawks will truly b in the hunt. Iowa is always the chief threat until mathematically they are not.
I get where you are coming from and I didn't write anything right after the match because I may have been right there. How many National Champions achieved their goal by not believing? Yes, it's different for fans and I am just trying to stay positive when frustrated too. They are our team and I feel us believing in them when others don't may help. "if you think you can you can, if you think you can't you're right."
Thanks Willie, but I think the majority of us were or are holding on to the idea of a National Title this year for the Hawks.
The chances were kind of slim with how strong PSU is this year, but there was hope.
Tonights forgettable performance snapped a lot of us back into the reality this a team title this year is probably a further reach than we previously thought.
I got my years confused. 2012 rather than 2014. Although that loss to Minny was early in the season.
Funny he gets all the blame. Tom and terry run that team. Morningstar side coaches and gets commitments from top tier wrestlers. Without M* we don't have the bigger recruits coming in like we do now. This board is a disease.
