Iowa WBB 2024-2025 Season Thread

Sign of the times I guess. The quote is from their dad
The quote isn't great, but elite women's basketball recruits more than most probably should make NIL opportunities an important factor in college decisions.

The WNBA is maybe the toughest league to make as a player. The 2024 draft was considered a good one, and so far only 11 players from that draft have played in the league and not been cut. And two of those 11 (Nika Muhl and Marquesha Davis) barely play.

For those that do make it, WNBA rookie contracts are less than $100,000 per year for 4 years.

In men's basketball, AJ Green went undrafted in the NBA Draft, but just got guaranteed a $2.1 million contract. The NFL minimum salary is just under $800,000 and there are 1,700 players on a roster at any given time. Many pro baseball players get a hefty signing bonus once drafted, even if they never make MLB. Women's basketball just isn't in the same stratosphere in terms of earning potential at the moment.

A perfect match for Iowa culture!

Jada Gyamfi chats with Callie Levin.
Some more insight given with how the coaching change was brought to the players and recruits.

*Around the 13:00 mark.

Levin herself seems an outgoing spark. Love her passion to be a Hawkeye and how that came about with her own recruiting story. Great to have these two Iowa girls on the team. Looking forward to see how each will contribute this season.

Jada does a great job with these, Callie has so much personality! Gotta be honest really excited to hear them talk about how athletic Ava is and how she can really jump.

It sounds like the freshmen are blending in great. Can’t wait for the season to get here.

Helluva selling point on the recruiting front.
Indeed. You would think so anyway. But it hasn’t translated much recently, it seems.

A bigger mystery to me is Iowa’s missing on some highly ranked low post recruits when you have Jensen’s record of success as a post coach.

The disconnect between the optimism among Iowa fans regarding the upcoming season, and the pessimism about Iowa from most (but not all) of the national outlets is interesting.

That can all turn around pretty quickly after a few games. The big question, I imagine, is if the offense works without a supernova pulling all the defensive attention, and if Iowa can find all the points that left. It's a challenge, but the ladies on this team can play.

Being underestimated may play to their advantage. We'll see.

I think Iowa will be better than most of these projections. This season reminds me a lot of 2019-2020. That team didn't have much in the way of expectations either, but likely would've hosted the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament had it not been cancelled.

On paper, I think this year's team is equal to or better than the 2019-2020 team. That said, I also think WBB has more talent now, and the Big Ten is much better.

Where did the Hawkeye womens basketball team rank in home attendance for last season? It has to be near the top, but I can't find the rankings. TIA

I would guess second. South Carolina arena seats more. Hawkeyes likely No. 1 iin road attendance.

The main thing is a sell out- as next year we get five star Addie Deal, Houston and maybe another 5 star—- to go with this years class with a year’s experience. You will have your seats locked up for the future

Hopefully this board's focus will turn to the 24-25 team instead of CC, now that her season is over.

From the video it looks like Hannah has gotten bigger and stronger plus able to score away from the basket. Olsen really has a sweet mid-range jumper and is quick off the dribble. Affolter, McCann and Fuerbach, and O'Grady played plenty of minutes last year so need to step up. Improved post play, better rebounding and how the freshmen contribute will define how this team does.

And, since there now is a board devoted to women's basketball, does there need to be a single thread devoted to the season?

These are the two lineups I'm dying to see:

1, 2, 3, 4, 5

11, 2(2)3, 33, 44, 55.

Strictly by the numbers :D

Match the players with the numbers and they both actually can work.
