Iowa WBB 2025 Recruiting Thread

Houston is not a 2. Houston could guard a 2, but is not a 2 offensively. . . . Houston plays hard ALL THE TIME and is quick off the dribble to the rim. Not sure how that will play at the next level, due to the length and athleticism of the competition. . . .

hawkbuck70 on Houston's position.

I've watched as much as I can of her game film. To me, she's the next Sydney Offolter. Physically strong, same size, good quickness, aggressive on the boards, good ball skills and defense. But like Sydney, she's not going to be a 4; she'll be a 2 or more likely a 3/W. Needs to develop an outside shot. It will do wonders for her game, and get her meaningful minutes in the Hawk lineup. Like so many of the players her height in HS, they won't dominate in college around bigger players. Question is whether they can adjust.
One more thing she definitely will draw a lot of fouls. She has a very quick first step.

Prospects Nation with newly updated rankings of ‘25 class, including 4 from AIA (other Iowa targets also ranked):

Speiser-14
Bourrage-17
Houston-30
Zediker-40
Jasmine Davidson #2
Addison Deal #5.
Brynn McGaughy #18
Layla Hays #21
Bella Hynes #32
Jaliyah Davis #34
Taliyah Henderson #35
Destiny Jackson #37
Aniya Trent #46
Adelaide Jernigan #54
Avery Gordon #57

Bluder has set her sights pretty high for this class.

Also, we haven’t rly discussed Zediker. I remember someone saying she would have signed with us if given the chance, but wasn’t. What happened there? Overhyped?

Any interest from Jasmine Davidson? Is that real or not?
Nothing overly positive. On the plus side, her AAU coach LOVES our staff and Ava Heiden is her teammate. That’s it tho.

Zediker was in for a visit but I don't believe she was offered. I don't recall seeing her rated 40th in the country ever, so maybe a great summer on the AAU circuit.

Adelaide Jernigan-#54 also has an Iowa offer.
Updated. I also missed Jaliyah Davis.

Also, I checked the P/N 2024 rankings and our commits have seemingly fallen off a cliff. Neither Heiden nor Mallegni are listed anymore. Stremlow barely makes the Top 60. Guyton is nowhere to be found either.

ESPN Hoopgurlz has Heiden as the #3 listed post, at #32 overall. Mallegni is at #62, and Stremlow at 71. Don't think I've ever seen Guyton listed, or Levin. Prince has fallen to #25. I still think this is a good class; Heiden will be a great post, Stremlow a good floor general and leader. It does lack that 6'2" athletic 4 to come in behind Stuelke.

Watching film I think Mallegni is a far better ball handler than Warnock but otherwise they have similar game.

BTW, looking at film of AIA; on the floor with Houston, Zediker, Bourrage, Speiser, etc; the one who was dominating the two games I watched was Libby Fandel from CR Xavier, of whom I'd never heard; but they were playing her as a 3, a 4, even a post. She seems to have a cornucopia of skills, including a great 3. She's just 6'0", but was playing beyond her size. Only recruited by Drake, S.Dak and N.Dak, which didn't look right. Anyone familiar w/her game?

Agreed. Thing is, the women's game is evolving so quickly that you can't just compare a player to their predecessor, because their opponents are getting better too. So Teagan might end up being a better player than Warnock, but who will she be lining up against in the next few years? Plus, Makenna played mostly as a 4, and I'm thinking Bluder sees Mallegni as a 3. ? By the way, are you guys all basically Hawkeye fans, or do you follow the WNBA, national teams etc?

I think it is a good class too, I’m familiar with their rankings (see my other post about 3 of 4 making the ESPN top 100, updated the other day — Guyton is #60 btw). Someone shared here that Levin likely had no chance to make the cut when she left AIA. Kyle H said he thought she’d make it, but he isn’t rly an authority on WBB recruits tbh.

Just saying, you never want to see your recruits trend down. Strange bc Heiden and Mallegni both (slightly) trended up when the ESPN top 60 became the Top 100 in June. They were both in the last iteration of the P/N Top 60 (can’t recall their ranks but they were very similar to their rank with ESPN), which is why it’s alarming that they’re gone now. Mallegni I guess was borderline anyway so not as jarring but Heiden dropping 20 or 30 spots is…not ideal.

Back to 2025 tho. A friendly South Carolina fan posted this random tidbit about Addison Deal on Reddit:

“I got to see Deal play in person a few times. She’s the real deal. Definitely top 10/15 prospect. Interesting note many don’t know is she is a Baton Rouge native and her parents are from LA but her social media is flooded with Iowa and LSU stuff so it’ll be interesting to see where she ends up (as I’m alluding it seems mostly between these two schools).”

Hopefully being in Baton Rouge within shouting distance of Kim Mulkey makes her realize she wants to get away as soon as possible.

She's primarily played point guard in younger age groups & is more of a 1 or 2. She's probably 5'10 as well. Natural athlete that gave up club volleyball to focus on AIA & hoops. I could see Iowa offer if they miss out on Bourrage & if they're looking for another PG type. She's more athletic than Levin in my opinion. Does have a BYU offer as well.

She's not a 2 at this point. She's been a post for years. Stopped growing so again, improvement with her guard skills is what we're hoping for.

Heard yesterday Divine's dream school is North Carolina. Also that Bettendorf has 3-4 transfers and one has been offered by UConn. 2 others are getting recruited at D-1 also.

Any names on these Bettendorf transfers?

Jhaliana Guy. PG from Clinton. She’s apparently a stud. This from 2 years ago. That’s one. McCorkle is the last name of the sophomore transfer from North. She started as a freshman on a state tournament team. Being recruited by D-1s.

Bettendorf with a new coach this year; had been coaching boys.

IMO Bourrage moving away from All Iowa Attack is a bad sign for Iowa's chances with her.

But Crump, Bjorn, and Lewis joining All Iowa Attack seem like a good signs.

Also, FWIW ESPN bumped Houston down to #35 on its latest Top 60 list.

Maybe it’s just me, but it seems like lately after a recruit commits to Iowa they go down in the rankings. Anyone else notice this too, or maybe the competition is so strong it’s normal to have big jumps or drops in the rankings? This also is the first year I’ve more closely followed wbb recruiting though too.

She went down before committing. Ava Heiden went up after committing, so did Taegan Mallegni. These are all for ESPN tho. Mallegni and Heiden both went down on Prospects Nation unfortunately.

I appreciate the rating changes, at least to the extent it shows the rankers are not wedded to their earlier opinions. Britt Prince as # 28 is a pretty significant fall. Same with Olivia Olson falling to # 15.

Hat's off to Jan. Never easy on the road. It is much worse than when I logged my 2M+ miles. First class has slipped, hotel services are even worse. You need to develop relationships face-to-face, Phone calls, texting and Duo calls, can only carry your relationships, only so far.

Hope there is more good news for 2025, soon.

Seriously. Frequent flying is not the experience it was pre-COVID. Entitled passengers act like infants and airlines can barely keep anyone on staff. I fly a lot and it feels like I’m constantly dodging interruptions. Cancellations, delays, etc are more common than ever while loyalty programs continue to water down their perks. Jan and Raina truly are road warriors.

Is Guyton somebody we really want vs others out there. How good is she? Really I don’t hear much about her.
I don’t think we’re in a position yet to be turning down a Top 60 recruit with an offer from Ohio State. It seems Bluder isn’t sold on any of our other ‘24 guards playing the 1, so we likely have the need as well.

Besides, if she doesn’t choose us she will likely end up at Nebraska or Illinois and will torture us for four years.
