Iowa women

Same 'ol story under Bluder: not quick nor athletic enough to do any more than make the tourney (which they won't again this year) and bow out in the first round.

Not a bad coach by any means, just slightly above average.

exactly--teams always turn it over too much and are not good on D, just good enough to keep the wolves at bay. My issue is we pay her a lot of money for some reason..

JEDN, I know it's your opinion that losing Tania cost the Hawks 3 to 5 wins but it's my opinion that you are being very generous about Tania's abilities. I don't think she would have made a difference in today's outcome.

The times I saw her play i wasn't overly impressed either.

Thanks Lady Hawkeyes for an interesting season---some good some bad but always interesting

I think Iowa would have won today had Tania played, plus the Michigan and Indiana games. She would bring dribble penetration that the current roster sourly lacks. And there would have been less turnovers.

Bluder is the tom Davis of women's program. Get to NCAA 7-8 times in 10 yr span. Rarely if ever get past opening week. Interesting name to keep an eye on is former Iowa player Jenny Lillis (married with different last name now). Head coach at drake. They are undefeated in conference and beat Iowa this year. Not sure how old or many years bluder has left but Iowa could look to drake again for next head coach.

Did make the Sweet 16 a couple of years ago.

Agree that Drake is looking pretty good. Nice combo of skill players and bangers (better that Iowa's) which is what is needed these days. Would guess ISU would be hard-pressed to beat them again.

Let's not forget Iowa beat NW by 19 points recently in IA. City without Davis. This game was lost when the ref called an early foul on our center. After that she had to play Coffey soft and she had her way with Iowa.
Iowa has too many holes in its lineup and outside of Gustafson , no one is capable of scoring unless Disterhoff is on.
Hopefully, next year the game will slow down for Doyle and her shots will drop. Only layups are going in for her now.

Iowa better make that move quick if they're going to do it.

I doubt Lisa is retiring anytime soon. She continues to recruit the type of young women that she always has, and I don't see that happening. If you think Iowa will be competing for Big Ten championships on a regular basis, you just as well find another team. For most Iowa fans and those that support the team and go to the games on a regular basis, winning 20 games and getting into the Tournament annually, satisfies most of us.

I'll take a "Tom Davis" coach any day of the week.
Tania's a great player, but we were .500 in the B1G with her and .500 in the B1G in games without her. In tight games they just seem to play well enough to lose no matter who is in the game or the opponent.

I think this year it came down to no mid or long-range consistent shooters.

I do think that 1) both OSU and MD this season are better than the various B10 conference champs from say, the Printy years and previous; and 2) the rest of the conference has a lot of teams that can be dangerous on a given night. That is, this Iowa team would be more successful in the B10 from 8-10 years ago.

One of the reasons NW won is the PG from NW is very good at stealing the ball. I think with Tania at PG it would have happened fewer times. Those turnovers were big momentum changers, IMHO.

I try to like Bluder as someone else mentioned, But her teams seem to play soft and always lack fundamental ball kills. Especially passing the ball, it is like they go blind IMO.

Davis hurt in the last few games may have made the difference in a couple of the close games. She knows how to get to the basket and Doyle was not quite ready for that. Doyle seemed to have a little trouble with the speed of the game when given the point guard duties. Team also lost confidence in their 3 pt shooting in last few games, always seemed to pause, look to pass and then think about the shot. Need that Melissa Dixon quick trigger. Also struggled to rebound but that has been a problem for several years with the womens team.

I have said for years that Bluder runs a triangle offense with un-athletic players and that doesn't work.

Iowa isn't the most athletic team but she puts them in a system that keeps them moving and cutting which opposing coaches say makes them the most difficult team to prepare for. Bluder scrapped the triangle offense midway through the season about 8-9 years ago.

Women's BB is a different beast than the men's game. Those that say Iowa needs to recruit more athletic players are right but unfortunately the women's game has far fewer of those types of players due to less competition and less focus of the women's sport. There is a very limited number of elite athletes in the women's game, particularly at the 4 and 5. Elite PGs are also hard to find but there's more to go around than there are bigs. Outside of the top 5 programs the odds of landing elite players are slim. Bluder has been very successful at being consistent which is no small task considering the state of Iowa BB after Stringer left. The loss of Davis hurt as did inexperience at PG in general.

The loss of Whitney Jennings prior to the season was probably the biggest factor in the way Iowa has played this season. Jennings was special and made everyone around her better. Jennings was a complete combo guard that opened the offense for everyone and without her defenses were able to collapse the paint limiting Iowa's bigs and closing off Ally's ability to drive. Coley was much better last year when she was able to maneuver in space.

I'm going off memory here, but I don't think Tom Davis ever lost a 1st round NCAA tourny game while at Iowa, and he was in plenty of them. Comparing the two is asinine.

I'm almost positive you are correct on TD never losing a first round ncaa tournament game. Pretty amazing feet.

As my post said both normally made the tourney but rarely made it past opening weekend. Davis was like 3-8 in 2nd rd games and bluder has done it once. Point is both above average and make the tourney and don't make too much noise there. Judas not saying they are exactly alike such as Davis never losing first rd game. In grand scheme of things with careers lot in common.

Gabe, what were Whitney's statistics for this year at her new school ? I don't agree that she is a special player.
Her senior year of high school she was player of the year for Indiana and Buss who plays for Indiana was player of the year in Illinois. The Iowa staff chose Whitney who is no longer in the Big 10 and Buss has led her team to a likely NCAA berth. Buss is the far superior play of the two.
Whitney is small and fast but was out of control much of the time. She appeared to be unhappy at Iowa.
Buss is bigger and more physical and seems to have an aggressive attitude, something Iowa women players usually don't exhibit.

I've seen Jennings take over the game in GameTime League. She has extraordinary offensive skills when she's not being bumped around by larger, stronger players. Given Bluder's preference for transition basketball, I can understand why she was recruited. But that didn't transfer over to regular season games in her time at Iowa. From my POV, everything that was a problem this season was also a problem last season when she was still here. I intend to follow her career at Butler and hope she does well.
