Iowa women

Gabe, what were Whitney's statistics for this year at her new school ? I don't agree that she is a special player.
Her senior year of high school she was player of the year for Indiana and Buss who plays for Indiana was player of the year in Illinois. The Iowa staff chose Whitney who is no longer in the Big 10 and Buss has led her team to a likely NCAA berth. Buss is the far superior play of the two.
Whitney is small and fast but was out of control much of the time. She appeared to be unhappy at Iowa.
Buss is bigger and more physical and seems to have an aggressive attitude, something Iowa women players usually don't exhibit.

Whitney is redshirting per NCAA transfer rules. Whitney is an excellent penetrating PG and a solid outside shooter. She also had an uncanny ability to get fouled. Her leadership is what we missed the most.

I'm going off memory here, but I don't think Tom Davis ever lost a 1st round NCAA tourny game while at Iowa, and he was in plenty of them. Comparing the two is asinine.

Then there was his dismal big ten tournament record, if I recall was ofer somenthing.

I've seen Jennings take over the game in GameTime League. She has extraordinary offensive skills when she's not being bumped around by larger, stronger players. Given Bluder's preference for transition basketball, I can understand why she was recruited. But that didn't transfer over to regular season games in her time at Iowa. From my POV, everything that was a problem this season was also a problem last season when she was still here. I intend to follow her career at Butler and hope she does well.

Exactly. Her scoring left a lot to be desired. She shot 37% overall and 32% from 3 last year.

Women's BB is a different beast than the men's game. Those that say Iowa needs to recruit more athletic players are right but unfortunately the women's game has far fewer of those types of players due to less competition and less focus of the women's sport. There is a very limited number of elite athletes in the women's game, particularly at the 4 and 5. Elite PGs are also hard to find but there's more to go around than there are bigs. Outside of the top 5 programs the odds of landing elite players are slim. Bluder has been very successful at being consistent which is no small task considering the state of Iowa BB after Stringer left. The loss of Davis hurt as did inexperience at PG in general.

The loss of Whitney Jennings prior to the season was probably the biggest factor in the way Iowa has played this season. Jennings was special and made everyone around her better. Jennings was a complete combo guard that opened the offense for everyone and without her defenses were able to collapse the paint limiting Iowa's bigs and closing off Ally's ability to drive. Coley was much better last year when she was able to maneuver in space.
The state of Iowa basketball after Stringer left was pretty good for 3 years with Tangela Smith and company. The next two years, not so good.

to be honest only 3 maybe 4 teams have any chance of winning the NCAA's. Everyone else is just playing to be playing some games and say we made it to the dance. Until something changes the womens game is not interesting the way it is now.

I can't care about WBB on a national level. Same crap over and over

We have four great D1 programs in iowa though. It's amazing.

Good call so let's support them the best we can

Gustafson is a beast inside. Add Tania Davis back next year. Watch the growth of frosh Meyer, Doyle, Cera, and maybe Ollinger. Stewert and Coley can play some. Add new athletic frosh Houston next year. Should be a good team, though still missing the outside shooting of Dixon, Logic, etc. of recent past. Hoping for fewer TOs next year, too, with more experienced youth.
I wish Bluder's teams could rebound and play tougher D. Two more athletic kids would really help both areas. Another question is who the leader will be??

I think all the returning players will improve & become more consistent. However it will all depend on what Bluder does with her rotations & asks her players to do. I hope she does a better job than she has the last couple of years. I'd like to see her go bigger at the "4" using Mohns & Ollinger who are both versatile inside/out players who can help space the floor. I think Ollinger could be a big surprise as she has good size, strength, & can shoot it too. Coley is going to have to get it together & be engaged every play night in/night out while showing some more toughness.

As for as who will be the leader, I'd say the on court leaders will be Gustafson, Davis, & Doyle with the latter being more vocal in huddles. Will be interesting to see what happens at the point when Tania returns. The seniors Coley and Buttenham will likely be more "off court" leaders as they don't have the game the other two do. Houston will help with her athleticism but will take some time to develop & get comfortable.

Coach has done a good job at Iowa. Her overall record at Iowa is something like 300+ wins and 170 + losses ... We've been a consistent part of March Madness (12 of 14 years) ...

There's just a big, big drop off when you take an Iowa and match it up against a Baylor, UConn, Maryland, Notre Dame ... Among those four programs are a combined 7 losses ... 7!

There aren't many women's programs who can even touch UConn ... Bluder has done a nice job at Iowa. She's been there forever (2000) ... I don't ever seeing us moving past the round of 32 ... Perform admirably in the Big 10 ... earn a big in March ... Play one game ... maybe two ... and call it a day ... Seems to be on par ...

Alexis Sevillian - redshirt freshman in 2017-2018 will be very important until Tania is back 100%, or if she takes a redshirt next season.

Iowa got to Sweet Sixteen two years ago. But after that group of seniors graduated, which included Logic, Dixon, and Doolittle, the team has yet to found its groove again. This year's freshman class was supposed to be No. 7 in the nation by one publisher, but evidently they are not good enough yet.

On the brighter side, Coach Stringer's last recruiting class at Iowa was compared to the "Fab Five", but they had a losing record in their freshman year. Coach Stringer left after that season, and Angie Lee took that group to two Big Ten champions, one Big Ten Tournament champion, and a Sweet Sixteen. So maybe there is hope yet for the current group.

Some of those Stringer teams were fun to watch ... Man, they were good ... I use Stringer as the perfect example of a coach who could recruit elite talent to 'little ol Iowa ... I never buy recruiting excuses ... A good coach and good recruiter can recruit elite talent to join them anywhere ...

Except UConn. Because f*** UConn.

Nobody wants to see them win anymore. Get off my television.

Betting that a player or two leaves, partly because of their experience this year and especially if the rigid 8-player rotation seems to be the future. Predicted Jenning's departure in January last year. Going with Mohns this time and maybe one more.

It is appearing as though you could be wrong about that bet. The transfer season is nearly over now and so far everyone is still here. I'm sure you are not really disappointed though. I do think that Carly could decide to graduate (with her classmates) next year and then possibly transfer for her final year of eligibility. Of course, a lot could depend on how she does this next year.

Not disappointed at all. Think Carly can be a wonderful player.

Last winter Mohns was saying she was healthy (told Oakhawk that, I think), vs the coaches who didn't think she was ready to contribute yet. Would have been nice to see for ourselves where Mohns is at in the GTL. If the difference of opinion between Carly and the coaches continues, I'd think a graduate transfer would be a good possibility. Also, if the staff continues to go down the 4-guard path, that leaves very few minutes to spread among the forwards.

Yes, it is certainly possible. But it takes the right coach to be able to do so. Stringer was a legend, who was also African-American with deep roots in the Eastern U.S. who quite frankly was much more able to successfully recruit minority athletes to Iowa than Bluder has been. This is not surprising whatsoever. On the men's side, Iowa has had great talent if led by Hall of Fame coaches (Ralph Miller, Lute Olson and Raveling).

This is not to say that it's impossible to get great talent at Iowa. It's just more difficult. Kids who grow up in big cities tend to want to go to school in big metro areas. And if not, then to one of the traditional powers like a Kentucky, Kansas, etc. where basketball is going to be front and center of everything.

Vivian was a legend, and it was terrible what happened with the sudden passing of her husband. I don't begrudge her whatsoever for starting over in Rutgers for the last chapter in her career.

I'm almost positive you are correct on TD never losing a first round ncaa tournament game. Pretty amazing feet.
Yea, but he never beat a higher seeded team except once he won against a team seeded one higher than us. So, those wins in the first round were all against lower seeded teams.
