What’s the maximum number of players you can have on scholarship? MBB is 13 but I count 15 on your 22/23 roster.

The D1 scholarship limit for WBB is 15. One caveat to that: I'm not sure if a player taking a Covid year counts against that limit.

If the Covid year does count toward that limit, we can only bring back a max of 3 of the 4 seniors (not including Czinano) next year. If it doesn't, we could conceivably bring everyone (but Czinano) back, at least for now.

I am pretty sure it does count against the limit. I thought that was why Lisa told Logan Cook and Tomi Taiwo that they couldn't come back for an extra year.

That's my guess too. I'm just not aware of anything from the NCAA that specifically confirms it (but I also haven't looked extremely hard to find it).

My understanding is that it did not count against the 15 the first season it was available ( 20-21), but does in all subsequent seasons. So Czinano and someone else won’t be here in 23-24 even though someone would have at least another year.

Is Iowa a serious contender for Jasmine Brown ? She has quite the offer list.
It's possible that some of Brown's offers are no longer committable. We're actually pretty late in the process for 2023 recruits. I assume anywhere a recruit is visiting at this point is a serious contender. As Kyle noted, Brown being teammates with Johnson-Etienne has to help.

Unfortunately, Jasmine does not tweet out her visits like others do, so I have no way of knowing if she has taken recent visits to other schools or even to Iowa in the past.

“Jones is ranked as the 83rd best girls basketball player in the nation in the Class of 2023, according to ESPNW's top 100.“
“She reached 1,000 career points scored this past season as well.”

“She also participated in track and field where she qualified for four events at the KSHSAA state track meet. Jones was the CKL league champion in the high jump (won the event at the 4A level in 2021 at the state meet). Jones finished on the podium in three of the four events she competed in. Jones also dominates in volleyball as one of the top kill leaders on the team.”

"I chose Iowa because it has a winning culture, the incredible fan base, and it just felt like home," Jones said.

You are correct. The COVID year will count against scholarships starting this upcoming season. Iowa is at 15 scholarships for the upcoming season. With Jones commitment today, at least one of the current seniors will not be coming back as Davis has said she plans to play 2 years. I would guess that more than one is likely not coming back. If I had to guess I would say Kate and Gabbie are not likely to come back. Kate has already been rumored to be on the fence, and with Ettiene committing, a guard leaving is likely.

I could also be they expect one of the younger players to transfer out as well. People on these boards were confident that Kate would be the most likely of the three to stay, but I have no idea. It does seem like they are stockpiling a lot of people at the 3/4 right now. But every position except the point is three or more deep. It's gonna be really hard to keep everyone happy. With offers out to some highly rated recruits it's gonna make for some hard choices if one or more of them pick Iowa.

I actually think Kate is the least likely to stay because this upcoming season will be her 5th year. I agree we could also see one of the younger players leaving if they decide there's not enough opportunity for playing time. The 3-4-5 are all pretty deep. And in 2023 we'll be 3 deep at the point.

I would guess Iowa is likely done for '23 as there's not too many big names left and will focus on '24 where at least 1 scholarship is available if no one transfers. If all three players opt to not take their COVID year, Iowa most likely would look to the portal for a grad transfer to fill the scholarship for '23.

Too slow to play the 3 and too small to play the 4.

We will see what this year brings. I wouldn’t be surprised to see her transfer after this year, especially if the freshman coming in pass her

The “marquee” game is Thursday morning. Missouri Phenom against All Iowa Attack.

Game will feature Levin, Bourage, Houston, Zediker, Coons and Speiser.

I’d be shocked if Bluder and/or Jensen are not there.
Kyle, do you know whether those games will be televised, or at least recorded in some way we could see them later?

Feels like a good time for a full reset on the WBB recruiting list. It has changed a large amount since the beginning of this thread.

Kyle, you go beyond the call of duty. Keep up the great work!

I thought that AJ looked lost last year

Too slow to play the 3 and too small to play the 4.

We will see what this year brings. I wouldn’t be surprised to see her transfer after this year, especially if the freshman coming in pass her
The coaches anticipated AJ would be a 4 when she committed, she was 6'3 & a with good but still developing perimeter shot. Coach Stamp said once she arrived on campus she practiced at the 5 almost exclusively but did get a few early minutes at the 4. She added some size which probably changed their plans since she became too slow to play at the 4 in Iowa's current offense. She's still the best shooter from range of all the centers on the roster. I'm not sure where her minutes are going to come from though.

What I observed in limited minutes is that she has a high motor and is an aggressive rebounder. She establishes well defensively in the post.

I think the coaches should have a serious talk with AJ about redshirting as there's simply no playing time at the 5 at the moment.

I disagree that she's slow but I do think she needs time to develop. She got spot minutes at both the 4 and 5 last season. She does seem more comfortable playing in the post though than out on the perimeter. Minutes are going to be hard to come by at either the 4 or 5 unless players transfer.

Czinano, Kate and Warnock ready to move on but that could change.

Marshall considering returning.

Czinano does not have any eligibility left after this season. I could see Kate leaving as well. She has been here a while and could be looking to just be done.

I have heard that Kate is interested in the possibility of coaching. She may go the GA route but not sure that is an option at Iowa. Lisa doesn't seem to use GAs regularly.

Clearing up some confusion in this thread:

-WBB gets 15 scholarships.

-Czinano will be out of eligibility after this season.

-Molly Davis, the CMU transfer, will be a senior this year, but has indicated she'd like to stay at Iowa for her COVID year. I'd pencil her in for the 2023-2024 season. She's in the same class as Warnock, Marshall, and Martin, so any discussion of whether those three will return should also remember Davis.

-Given the two recent 2023 commitments, there isn't room for all of Martin, Marshall, or Warnock to use their COVID year at Iowa, since that would put us over the allowed 15 scholarships. At max, we have room for just 2 or 1 depending on if we sign any more 2023 commits or want to leave room for transfers in. Of course any of them could grad xfer out and use their final year at another school, like Taiwo and Cook will be doing this year.

2023-2024 Scholarship Chart (two scholarships open at the moment):
Superseniors: Davis
Class of '24: Clark, Goodman, Feuerbach, Wetering
Class of '25: Affolter, Ediger, O'Grady
Class of '26: Stuelke, McCabe, Gyamfi
Class of '27: Ava Jones, Kennise Johnson-Etienne

Assuming Davis returns, and Martin, Warnock, and Marshall all leave Iowa has 2 scholarships remaining.

I would move Goodman and Wetering to '25 as they have a medical redshirt available.

I think Iowa is done recruiting and the staff will likely pursue a grad transfer if anyone else leaves so they can have more schollies available for '24 which is a deep class.

Well considering Jasmine Brown just had an unofficial visit, they're likely still open to signing one more '23 commit. I have a hard time believing they would turn her down.

Exactly.

Re: Gabe. I recognize that Goodman and Wetering have the medical redshirt option, but until we know one way or another what their plans are, I left them in the class they came in with for simplicity.
