Iowa Womens Bball Portal Targets

Last year, Bluder spoke about not having the money to compete in the buying of certain players, my guess she was talking about either Betts or Morrow, or both. Looks like the same problem this year, which is why we're seeing these posts from Iowa pleading about contributing $$.

...whatever dammit.
Caitlin Clark or not, what Iowa WBB offers is the opportunity to be on a team of rockstars. Lots of people will be watching Iowa WBB curious to see what happens. Get on the stage in a packed house, show your stuff, start winning games, and this team and the individual players can become part of an ongoing story.

This creates a family type atmosphere that a player is special to the team and players want to stay and play for the team and coaches. Close bonds are essential in a team concept style of play.
I wish this were true but I really wonder if that is the case for the vast majority of teams. I look at Oregon State -- all underclassmen who have played together now for two years. Struggled last season but this season really came on in the tough Pac-12 and played South Carolina to a 12 point game in the tournament. All during the post game pressers the players talked of their love for each other, their coaches and the University. Now 4 of the 5 starters and the 2 top reserves are in the portal, and these are top tier players. Granted OSU is being left behind with the demise of the Pac-12 and looks to be headed tot he WCC for the next two seasons, but they would be a lock for the NCAA and another deep run in the tournament if everyone came back as USC, UCLA, Colorado, Arizona, Utah, Stanford: all quality programs would love to play the Beavers in Non-conference play to boast their RPI. Unfortunately it is gonna take big money to keep players home and attract impact players into your program. It is really tough for coaches, as they want to keep their best players and attract players that are good fits for their program and culture.

I can see what you are saying. Bluder teaches the team concept at Iowa. The issues you bring up with Oregon St are unique and maybe created the 4-5 player opting for the portal issue. To say the leased NIL has created a mess due to no guidelines. I hope it gets under control in the near future with limits on transferring and maybe a cap on money. NIL's a mess right now and needs to be brought under control.

Was Iowa the last team to play in a Final without all-star mercenaries joining a run at a natty? Don't know if that question sounds like portal hyperbole, but it seems that's the era of collegiate sports we are now entering.
They probably will be.

An entire network of alumni that, dare I say, just give ex athletes well paying jobs. IE medical sales, insurance etc
Michigan has a setup like this. One of my players was recruited by them. I think it’s for 35 years. After graduating from UM former athletes will receive emails notifying them when a job opens up at a Michigan friendly company in their major. They take care of their athletes for life.

The funny thing about her going to Maryland is that they only have 6 players returning next year (and 9 roster spots filled) lmao. Lots of questions marks there still. I’d say the only sure starters are Sellers and McDaniel. I think Brenda would
prefer to upgrade at the other positions. Hope Olsen can meet a few more returning Hawkeyes, maybe even 3 or 4 likely starters.

Well done.

Who would we rather have, Olsen?
It’s an interesting comparison. Scherr is clearly the more naturally talented athlete. She was a 5 star kid in HS. Olsen seems to have more of that dawg in her tho and I could be wrong but it seems like she is better off the dribble / in the lane (please correct me if I’m wrong, just basing this off highlights). Olsen is clearly leaving Nova for bigger and better things and I think that reflects her mentality on the floor (whereas Scherr is just trying to figure out how to navigate her coach being fired).

IMO, however, Scherr has played a stronger sum of teams over her career than Olsen with two years in the PAC and 2 in the SEC. Scherr’s experience at Oregon is especially valuable bc they play an offense-first style with pace (idk much about Villanova’s system — thoughts anyone?). More recently she has played very well against SC and LSU. Scherr seems to be a more well-rounded prospect that can help with playmaking and defense even if she’s not always lighting up the scoreboard. She also has an additional year of experience.

OTOH, Olsen is used to being the go-to scorer for her team and I assume that’s the role Bluder wants her to step into at Iowa. Olsen also just wrapped the season scoring 20+ against two B1G teams (PSU, ILL) in a tourney which is clearly great prep for the immediate task at hand.

Even though CC will be gone, the interest in Iowa WBB will still be incredibly high. If I owned a business in Eastern Iowa, I would think it would be highly lucrative to have someone like Lucy Olsen on board as a spokesperson. I have to think that there would be some decent NIL options available, above and beyond the equal monthly stipends that all participating players receive.

For all the clamoring about getting everyday fans to donate to the Collective, I think it is more likely that it’s the Swarm Inc. corporate side that could make the difference in landing a player like Olsen.

Wonder if there is a scholarship being freed up that we don't know about yet and would have room for both. Otherwise is it whoever wants to commit first? Just curious to know the behind the scenes of the offers. I personally don't want anything to get in the way of the development of the freshmen class even if it means we don't take a transfer. In that sense I'm glad we're targeting folks with just the one year of eligibility left.

If I'm a business, I'd want Hannah and Syd as my spokespeople!

You don't see many 98's on ESPN.

SIAP but was Olsen ever ranked in any the High School rankings?
Doesn’t appear so. That’s what I mean, more rough around the edges perhaps, but clearly hungry for the ball and to have an impact. A proven scorer but not as athletic as Scherr whose natural talents will likely help in many elements of the game beyond scoring.
