Iowa Womens Bball Portal Targets

I think that's the issue. When it just comes down to who has the most money, the game really loses some of its luster, and the identity of college hoops. Then we're back to a few blueblood schools, or greenblood in this case.
Kurt I agree with you 100%. But if this past 2 seasons showed ANYTHING, it showed that 1 person can make all the difference. Running to the bluebloods may get you on the bench of a great team for 3 years. Go to ???? (Iowa) and take them to the title game. Which is better. Sadly the answer probably is whoever pays the most. I agree that will ruin most if not all of the momentum this year built for WCBB whether they want to admit it or not. Having UConn vs SCarolina the next 2 years after unbeaten seasons will send the numbers right back where they came from.

Maybe I was bit too high on her. Not exactly a super impressive list. I rly thought she’d be the kind of kid Bluder would want to reach out to. I’ll be shocked if she’s not at Indiana.

Tbh the narrow net Bluder has cast — ONLY to two kids, each with ONLY one year left — makes me think she is betting on the 2025 recruits coming thru. God I hope it doesn’t blow up in her face.

It's still fairly early in the process. The portal has become like professional sports free agency where the top players available hold up the market for everyone else. "Come play PG for the national runners up two years running" is still a very good recruiting pitch. It's just not as good for a player like Olsen with so many options. If Iowa doesn't land her they can pivot elsewhere.

The interesting twist the portal adds is that if Iowa doesn't land Skinner in 2025 they could always try to bridge 2025 with another 1 year portal player to the Greenway, Lewis, Bjorn class. Or hope that Stremlow, Guyton, etc. are ready by 2025.

I like her approach so far, I absolutely love the fact that she is swinging for the fences in regard to 25&26. As far as it blowing up in her face, Certainly can happen, If it does then she has the portal to use to her advantage in regard to fill holes. I obviously could be completely off base but I believe she can really sell the fact that at Iowa she won’t recruit over you with the portal (ie LSU) and instead will let you develop.

This creates a family type atmosphere that a player is special to the team and players want to stay and play for the team and coaches. Close bonds are essential in a team concept style of play.

I am sure it has been explained previously, but would someone please explain how we have one open scholarship next year? We have five seniors leaving and five new recruits, and I thought we were at our scholarship limit this year. I do not follow the scholarship distribution closely and am sure it is an easy explanation, or I am just incorrect with my numbers above.

You don't have to be at the max roster size every year and quite a few teams don't carry the max on a yearly basis. 5 in & 5 out doesn't necessarily mean there is no open scholarships.

Iowa was at only 14 this year.

Not sure what "people" were saying that but that team had Marisa and Owusu. Ciezki was absolutely not handling the ball or initiating any offense.
I meant the announcers like Meghan McKeown. Thanks tho, that makes sense! Probably B1G announcers talking all the athletes up as they tend to do overinflated my sense of her abilities lol. I didnt watch PSU games closely, I was just going off of hype and position when considering her as a target. I also assumed she was a true PG bc MD and IU (whom I do watch more closely) have both been badly in need of one so that tracked.

Gotcha! You should know better than to trust anything McKeown says. 😂 As far as IU goes, although CMM isn't a natural PG, I see no way in hell Moren is going to move her back off the ball unless there was a clearcut positional upgrade (like Olsen/Hagemann/Chen). IU needs an off ball guard to replace Scalia who can spot up and finish plays which is where Ciezki would fit in.

Iowa was at only 14 this year.

Thank you, for some reason I thought 14 was the maximum. As I mentioned, I do not follow the scholarship allocations closely and rely on the experts in this thread!

There are multiple things at work here.

Last off-season the roster was at 15 right after the season ended. Then Wetering entered the portal a few days later. Iowa "filled" that open scholarship with Guyton in the 2024 class bringing back to 15. Then Goodman announced she was leaving the program a year earlier than anyone anticipated to bring it back down to 14 again.

They were getting tuition paid, room and board and probably a lot of other freebies. Nobody was making them do it if they didn't want to
Most don't even know how much college athletes made prior to NIL. Heck their food/food cards/stipend alone are likely close to the national average for salary.

My quick calculation: 20 hours per week in season for practice and 2 games. 6 months. That is 500 hours. 10 hours per week off season. That is another 250. That is 750 hours. If out of state, I think tuition at Iowa plus board/room, etc is $40K or 50K. Say $45,000 divided by 750 = $60 per hour. Pretty nice for doing something you like/love at age 18!!!! I know there is other time spent for travel, etc but seeing new places especially for tourneys in nice places with tutors, etc for study isn't so bad. Unless you really dislike teammates.

The 1st message regarding women's basketball & donations was April 4th from Goetz. Swarm posts one 3 hours ago & now this one...Not getting the feeling that things are going as we all hoped.

Everybody knew this would happen...Iowa NIL sucks for most all sports and is ok to average for football....expect all Iowa sports to go back to middle of the pack till a big time donor steps up

I'd say your hours are off but with that being said, so is your total compensation: closer to $75k-$125k depending on school. Plus not having a student loan is never discussed.

Can anyone explain why basketball and football have a limited amount of scholarship? I don't think wrestling has any limits.
Penn State can have maybe 100 wrestlers as long as they have donors willing to pay for all of them???
Does anyone know if this is true?

Technically, wrestling has 9.9 scholarships. But with NIL...I don't think those limits really constrain everyone.

D1 college wrestling only has 9.9 scholarships. Nobody ever gets a full ride, the money is split up among many recruits.

Is there a roster size limit on wrestling? I think there is one on basketball, which is separate from the scholarship limit.

I know that. But with a big donor they can have unlimited people??? How can this not be regulated?

Plus there are additional benefits (ex. training table is NOT the same as dorm food, medical, training staff, TV exposure for those with pro aspirations, additional academic support...etc.)

At some point, and soon, the NCAA will need to figure out a better system of managing NIL and the portal. Right now, it's the largely unregulated wild west, and there is a clear danger that all the progress that NCAAW hoops has made in the past few years will be hacked off at the knee.

Watching recruiting now feels like watching an Iowa football game where we've played pretty well, but the other team has the ball and they are about to kick a FG to win the game in the last minute and ruin my day.
