This one was painful. Iowa lost to a 1 win Northwestern team who didn't have a pulse. How did it happen?

1. McCarran. He's undersized, has stubby arms, and isn't the fastest guy on the field, but he played his heart out today. He stepped up as our #1 WR with eight catches for 78 yards, and looked as good or better than King in the return game.

2. OL Play. Wow. Northwestern had just 6 sacks all year. They got 7 against the OL guru's crew. Cole Croston wouldn't start for most MAC teams, but he's our starting left tackle? In the last 5 recruiting classes, we don't have anyone better to protect CJ's blind side? Zero holes for our running backs, despite their best efforts. We just gave Brian Ferentz a $100,000 raise 2 weeks ago. Did he earn it? Time for another raise, or should he just be handed offensive coordinator duties now?

3. King. King is a man among boys. Northwestern was the first team that actually threw at him, and he made them pay. He batted away 3 passes, and was on guys like white on rice, giving up zero yards after catch. Great special teams play as well. Ferentz will go down in history as wasting King's talents, mark my words. Why isn't King guarding teams' best players yet? Why can't he run a few routes on offense?

4. DL. What happened to our pass rush? We came into this game as a top team in QB sacks. In this game, we barely laid a finger on the QB and failed to contain the edge at all. The Nelsons were no shows. Last year we routinely stopped the run. What changed?

5. Clock Mismanagement. Some say it's "old kirk," but I think the guy with the phys ed degree is just not bright. Before halftime, Northwestern had 4th and long from the Iowa 28 yard line with 2:15 left. Rather than calling timeout and putting the team in a position to score, Kirk chews his gum, let's them run the clock, and by the time CJ takes the field, we have just 1:16 left. A full minute lost! Then, our first play call, with good field position, is a run up the freaking middle to run another 30 seconds. I mean SERIOUSLY!?!?

6. QB Play. CJ's just not right. He's tentative, super scared to make a mistake, and lacks the kind of swagger a 5th yr senior who has already been all Big 10. His lack of awareness of pressure is going to prevent him from sniffing a down in the NFL. He's underthrowing his receivers, throwing balls behind guys, and just not sharp. Perhaps this is a bigger issue with QB's getting worse rather than better at Iowa. It happened with Christensen, Tate, Vandenberg, Stanzi, Rudock, and now CJ. Sad but true.

6. Fat Cats. De ja vu. What happened the last time Ferenz won games and signed an insane lifetime contract with huge buyouts? The fat cats entered Iowa City for a span of 4 years. Well, after the ISU game, Ferentz upped the ante, took a HUGE pay raise (even though he wasn't going anywhere anyway), and what has happened since then could have been seen from a mile away. Our teams are unprepared, and show virtually no emotion out there. They are taking on the persona of their coach.

7. Officiating. It's been years since I thought reffing was severely one sided, and I don't think the refs alone cost us this game, but the officiating in this game was so one sided in favor of Northwestern that I'm shocked our big DT was the only guy who talked back to the officials. CJ gets facemasked and doesnt say a word? Our WR gets mauled and Ferentz just keeps chewing his gum? Do these guys even want to win?

I did not watch the game but it sounds like the refs didn't help any yet iowa played bad enough to lose anyways

CJ's "swag" directly reflects the confidence he has in his offensive line. Peyton Manning in his prime would have tough time showing any swag with this line up front. He is well aware of how awful they are.

Northwestern out-rushed Iowa, 198-79. The Wildcats recorded six sacks and nine tackles for loss.

We were man handled AGAIN.

We are too weak on the lines.

/thread.

This^^^^. We can't run the ball with any consistency and our d-line gets pushed around. Thats our biggest problem. We have many other problems right now, but if we can get those fixed it helps the other problems be very minimal.

The refs were definitely a factor and you could make an argument they were directly responsible for a 14 point swing, but Iowa also was terrible so its hard to yell at the refs too much.

Honestly, this is probably the sole difference between last year and this year. Last year, the lines could block or at least maintain their gap on defense. This year, it's almost like they don't even understand what they are supposed to be doing out there.

Well this sucks, Hawks lose AND I agree with iowalaw. Is it time for Phil and BF to start coming up with some answers?

The saddest part of all of this is we finally made it to the point we could have atleast looked around and we signed KF again. My entire teenage, 20's, and 30's will be spent watching Vanilla a$$ football. Hope those recruits pledges are strong.

Gap control by DL...or lack thereof....is the primary issue on D and leads to all the other breakdowns.

Pass protection by OL is astonishingly bad and directly leads to many of the down and distance issues we've had.

Offensive creativity is also lacking. When you can't pass protect, maybe consider moving the pocket, misdirection, delayed draws, things that take advantage of over pursuit. But no...we stay base drop back with long-developing pass plays. It really is hard to understand.

Elsewhere today:

Rutgers, the team we beat by just 7 points last week got annihilated 58-0 today by OSU.
Miami of Ohio...perhaps the best team we beat this year, dropped to 0-5.
Iowa State, our only other win, played out of their minds today, and dropped to 1-4.
Northwestern was 1-3 before us, with losses to Western Michigan and Illinois State.

Kirk and his agent were very shrewd exploiting the softest schedule in Big 10 history last year and the easiest non-conference and first two opponents in the Big 10 this year to sign an unconscionable contract extension. This falls on Barta for being blind to it.

If you want to see how real big ten football should be played, turn on the Mich v Wisc game. The talent differential vs Iowa is insane.

Per Desmond King, one of our lone bright spots today, in his post game interview...Iowa was "outcoached" today. I wonder if that gets him in Kirk's dog house? He's already been booted from being team captain. This sign of internal termoil could be the tip of the iceberg.

Link? When and what did he say? If THIS is true the capt has lost thr ship.

What led to him being stripped of his role as team captain?

Post was excellent. Spot on. No sane person can disagree with any of this.

There's several tips that we should have all picked up heading into this season which are a sure fire give away that's it's going to be a dumpster fire.

1. Expectations. Whenever this program has any they are totally unprepared to meet them. In fact we employ a less creative, risk averse approach the garuantees losses. Last time it was the coach was out fundraising. What's it going to be this time?

2. When I hear 'the guys are really working so hard in the off season'. The result on the field always indicates the opposite. We have completely melted down in almost every fourth quarter and second half this season and we have yet to play a good team! So much for facilities and S & C.

3. Bower is rocketing up the depth chart. He makes almost no plays. Does he have a single TFL, sack or pick this year? Josey has to play his gap to now. In 2014 when he was on the outside we got gashed on the edge. Now he's on the inside and we are routinely gashed there. Another KF attempt at either a good story or union card gift. How he beat out Mends is shocking.

Actually, it's quite possible. After your best defensive player does a blatant retaliatory face mask to make up for the missed possible face mask yelling at the refs too much is exactly what happened. For a game that was on the line, you'd expect more maturity than pissing away 30 yards like that.

In before someone points out the last name you misspelled, thereby rendering all of your opinions as useless shite.
I'm not that someone.

Riley McCarron said in his post game interview, "It's hard to execute plays when your quarterback is getting sacked." Their seems to be some finger pointing starting to go on, which is concerning.

Right. Iowa's stupidity makes it hard to blame the refs.

Anyone think we'll see a drop in season ticket sales next year ? Bet all those fair weather fans feel pretty stupid right about now.
Yep 8 dropped mine last year but picked up a set this year. Coming off 12-0 was worried about getting tickets for the games against UW and MI. Turns out I could have gotten tickets straight from the box office for any game right when they went on sale. I'll keep my tailgating spot drop my season tickets and still go to all the games next year at half the price. Supply and demand economics for Hawkeye football!

I disagree as I want finger pointing. Enough with this PC bull crap of 'cleaning & fixing up' a few things until the season is lost. Everyone lay their cards on the table and get it known that this program was badly mis-managed once again.

This team is weak on both sides of the ball.
