Iowa's pass rush is anemic.

PSU will either put a chair down for their QB while he looks for receivers, or gain 5 yards before they even reach our LB's.
DL was playing contain ... but you're right, they still should have been pressuring the QB more. It appeared to me that they stepped things up more in the 2nd half.

And were again in the GD MF 4-3 midfield. And yes. I noticed we switched to dime on 3rd and long etc Im sure someone can come in and tell me we ran 10 plays in the dime but its absolutely unacceptable to be in 4-3 consistently vs 4WR sets. It wasmt even stopping the run! They had huge windows to throw in all first half and ran as they pleased. Its absolutely unacceptable and its why we lose to teams of this calibur. I can hardly watch.

Key part is we couldn't stop the run. What the hell happened to our tackling.
Also
We have to allow our dline to speed pash rush and throw some moves. I would rather be tackling qb's in space than their wrs or rbs.

We have a bunch of tough but slow bull rushers... no one actually tries to evade or shuck blocks. We are gravy to pass block against.

I have said this before and that is we really lack playmakers and athleticism on defense. We have a number of tough, try hard guys but very little speed and agility.

What you are seeing is the reason defensively we have been getting stomped in marquee bowl games recently. When we hit teams that spread us out with better players.... game over.

Also one playmaker I thought we had was Anthony Nelson but he's been quiet on the rush. Wonder if he put on weight to play the run but lost some quickness in the process?

Even so the D only gave up 7 points the other 7 was a gift from the refs.

While we are not fast, our pass rush is a product of our scheme. Stay in your lane's. I don't like it either. It's also why AJ doesn't get more plays.

I agree with the post and it needs to improve. McSorley will pick us apart if we give him that much time.

Having said that, I think Hesse played a whale of a game today.

Anthony Nelson has not looked the same as he did last year. In fact, he's been non-exisistent so far this year.

They are not allowed to go out of their rush lane. They rarely pin arms and rip or speed rush. This is by design and it suck. It might be ok if you played a qb that is run first.

We've had lots of guys in past like Babineax, jaleel johnson, Matt Roth, Hodges, Clayborn, Mike Daniels, King that played the same defense and got sacks and TFL. Hesse looked like the best of the bunch and he is not much of a pressure guy. Anthony Nelson has taken a step back--I was expecting big things out of him.

Anemic would make it seem like we have one to begin with. It is straight up nonexistent. The past two games we've had our hands on a QB maybe half a dozen times.

The QB today finished an entire jigsaw puzzle during one of the downs before being forced to pass
Aj no? WHY NO PLEASE? Speed special talent.

My GAWD!!!!!

The last time I looked the MEAN GREEN scored Zero (0) points in the second half, (Evidently the Iowa defense needs to score more points or hold the opposition to NEGATIVE frickin' points) Another poster pointed out that one of the 2 first half TD's was a gift to North Texas.

Except for the bone head plays by both the O and the D the score should have been 41 to 7.I will take that anemic pass rush every day of the week.

Do you not get... BEND do not Break?

I realize most of you are trolls and/or know nothing about football, yet gee whiz.

Am not a troll.Honest.Pass rush.Bend but do not break. Will accept your answer.Next week.PSU.Will need heat on Qb.GO HAWKS.

Won't see it with Trace McSorley playing, will try to keep him in the pocket. My fear is our linebacking core trying to keep up w/ Barkley or if McSorley scrambles. Bower will whiff bad on both, possibly Niemann and The Outlaw due to his injury. Need to run a spy on both for contain and minimize their damage.

My fear is they will try to run base D and get shredded. PSU too talented on O not to change up the D. I have bad feeling about this game and what the Hawks can do on both sides of the ball against PSU, who appears to be the best team in the league.

The PSU TE is really good and they will isolate him again on Bower for easy scores. See last year's game tape of Bower running 5 yards behind him.

I'd have to rewatch, but I don't think they were doing a lot of stunts or fancy schemes - plain Jane pass rush. Yes, that's not like in past years when we had a beast that could not be contained, but when we do throw some schemes out, pass rush will improve. It's just higher risk when you have a back like Barkley, who might sniff out that stunt and get into the backfield very quickly for a big gainer.

Iowa will look at last year's game and make adjustments. Only problem is PSU will take that into consideration and have a different scheme and game plan we're not ready for.. they've had our number as of late!

You seem trollish yourself. 38pts to ISU in regulation is bending over in a prison shower and N. Texas State is not very good. Pass rush is poor to mediocre. Run stopping is probably okay.

Looks like Hooker has replaced Gervase. Would like to see Golston and Simon. And more Jones.

This. I know he's an upperclassman but through 3 games I don't understand why Brincks has gotten so many snaps at DE. Especially yesterday he provided zero pressure didn't hold the edge on some runs and sucked in on play action few times yesterday.

When watching the games I think it starts in the middle of the Defense line. I think Anthony and most of the ends profited having Jaleel on the interior, he drew double teams and just the overall attention of the opposing O lines. If we get consistent up the middle again, it should free up those ends to make plays.

We desperately need:
  • More speed and/or quickness at DE/DT (Hesse played darn well yesterday, Epenesa still getting feet wet, especially vs run) - probably more of a recruiting deficiency.
  • More speed at outside LB - Bower is no Kirksey, but we need someone in that mold (directionally) who can more effectively cover against the 3/4 WR sets.

Plus Parker said this group would bat down balls. Gonna need that against PSU. Plus about 40 pts on offense.

The teams on our schedule. Would you rather be 1-2 like the ugly Red team just west of us?

I didn't expect much improvement in the pass rush. We lost J.J. and gained AJ which could be a wash (fresh against sr), but has already been pointed out we lose the double teams in the middle.

I was expecting a bunch of knocked down passes based on the hype from practice, but we aren't getting our arms up or hands on the passes either. We've got to get a bunch better as B1G play begins. I get controling the lanes, but we haven't been great at controling the edge edge or plugging the middle either.

Some of those guys were actually better in the pros than college.
