Is Fran a serious contender for B1G Coach of the Year?

No. I think Garza will get all of the credit for where IOWA sits. Don’t get me wrong, he deserves a lot of it, but credit should be shared.

If Garza doesn’t get POY, I’ll be much more confused.

Wasn't Iowa predicted to
finish 10th in the B1G by most in the media?

I don't think Rutgers or Illini were picked to be B1G contenders either. If Fran has Iowa among the top3 teams and Rutgers/Illini are not ahead of Iowa, then it makes sense for Fran to get coach of the year.

Tons of contenders this year, will depend on who finishes best down the stretch. A legitimate case could be made for Fran, Underwood, Chambers or Pikiell right now.

To be decided... so much left to be decided in this league but Fran is at the very least in the discussion.

I don’t know if he’s the winner right now, but he’s a finalist. Especially when you consider we lost two starters and an expected contributor before Big Ten play even really got started.

If the voting were today, he would be in the top 2 or 3 for sure. 9 more conference tilts to go so It's too early to have a feel for where things end up.

I might be biased,
But at just past the halfway point I have:

Fran - coach of the year
Garza. - player of the year (he wasn’t even honorable mention last year!)
CJ - All freshman team. Does he have a shot at freshman of the year?
Kriener - chance of 6th man of the year?
Other Hawkeyes landing on 2nd, third, honorable mention: Wieskamp 2nd Team?

depends how the season plays out.

one guy can't win the b1g alone, especially on a team that wasn't expected to do much.

why JW 2nd team? He's the only b1g finalist for the jerry west award, but no shot at 1st team?

I agree with you. I think he’s deserving of first team...will the voters put two Hawkeyes on the first team? Sometimes it gets political.

Lets let the season play out.....its february. When you can have a complete defensive flop at any time Id say no

Highly unlikely!! Let’s see if we have the end of the season meltdown before we crown him anything other than average at best!

No, not in any way. A good team should never get beat like this ever. This team and coaching staff were about as ill prepared as possible. Really pathetic!

Doesn't look like Iowa is going to finish in Top3 in B1G. You don't get coach of year for being 4th or 5th best team in B1G.

Probably not.

As noted above, 4th or 5th place in the league isn't going to cut it.

Msu lost there by 29. Are they good?
Iowa was down by 25 at half time and the second half was also a disaster. I do not care about MSU, but the verdict is still out on how good MSU actually is this year. PSU beat them last night in East Lansing.

Coach of the Year should be simple - award it to the coach of the team that wins the conference championship. Getting an award for beating expectations that are partially set on your previous inability to perform well shouldn't be a thing.
