Is interest in bball at an all time low?

After last basketball season and the heartbreaking losses in football this season, I know I'm almost back to the Lickliter level of apathy about basketball. I'm still watching the games, but it's purely out of habit. I have no expectations of even being entertained, let alone seeing a good product on the court. Barring a major miracle, this basketball season doesn't look like it'll be any better than the last, and by the time it's over I'm likely to have developed a better habit than watching the Hawkeyes get embarrassed.

Good thing GB slipped that extended contract in there for Fran last year. Otherwise, I'd have say it was time to give another coach a shot at bringing this program up to mediocrity.

Not really sure WTF I just read. The line about Iowa facing challenges from the selection committee bias is complete nonsense. Win games.

The solution to hoops also isn't to expand the tourney.

The criteria to get into the NCAA isn't just about how many games you won. There a lot more that goes into it and one of the factors is who the team is and their history. If you think the committee is going to pick Iowa over Michigan St, assuming similar record, you're nuts. Iowa has to be very high in the standings if we want to make the NCAA, and that's going to be a challenge for this team.

Please list all the times Iowa has been shafted by the committee based on name recognition. You'll have to cite sources (RPI, SOS, etc) where a less deserving/more recognizable team earned a bid.

You're missing my point and that's maybe my fault. I'm not saying we've been shafted and I'm not whining about us getting into the NCAA Tournament. My point is, we aren't going to get the benefit of the doubt. There's many things the committee looks at so if it comes down to Iowa and Mich St, depending on what you look at, there's always going to be an argument for either team. One team maybe beat the other team, or it could be their away record, or it could be how they finished, or it could be how many top 25 teams they beat. So if there was one spot left and it was down to Iowa and Mich St, I'm pretty sure you could find a reason to pick Mich St, and my guess is the committee would take Mich St over Iowa.

People comparing it to the good ole days is apples to oranges. As we found out recently the playing field is/was not level. Schools like Iowa in football and basketball have a razor line margin to achieve success. People that think Iowa is or should be an elite school for athletics...they never will be in that 5%....ever. The playing field is not level.

If people would look at it as entertainment (which it 100% is) they would enjoy it more. Iowa winning and losing in sports has not a single morsel of affect on any of our lives. I have season tickets because I enjoy the entertainment....I cheer for the Hawks and get frustrated by them, but never has it affected my day to day life.

On top of that folks are roasting players and coaches after one game ....in which they won! Think about that one second. New year and they are 1-0

The best basketball in IC for the last 15 years or so has been played by Lisa Bluder's team. I know the swingin' dicks here will go all stud-boy on this comment, but if you want to get excited about some Hawkeye basketball, go watch Megan Gustafson and crew.

Maybe that should be the exhibition game next season: Iowa men vs. Iowa women. Wouldn't THAT be an attraction.... They'd fill Carver, and the Iowa men might actually learn something about how to play the game.

interest in BB and FB are at all time high when it comes to the fans that go to games and don't care about the internet crybabies that demand championships every year.

My wife and I attend nearly all the home men’s BB games and when out of tow, give away our tickets to friends/relatives. If you live within a 90 minute drive and are not attending the games, then YOU are part of the PROBLEM, Plenty of available seating at a reasonable price.
I live in Des Moines. Getting to Carver is not as convenient as you make it sound. Weekend games are about the only option. Don’t cast stones as getting to Carver isn’t as easy for everyone as you like to believe.

I still watch every game that is on TV and hope they do well.

I used to be on Fran bandwagon, but after seeing years of late season collapses, very poor record in close games, very poor B1G tournament record---I'm convinced this guy's system doesn't work. We need a genius like Bo Ryan, not a guy that doesn't bother with defense or minimizing turnovers. Too many tall slow guys trying to play fast basketball in an era where guards/small ball is what wins games.

He is better than LIckliter and similar to Alford in W/L.

Would be nice if Barta retired and we got someone that doesn't give out long term contracts for mediocre performance.

Not sure how it would go over now a days and don't know how many programs still do it. I know it's still big at Kansas, Kentucky and some of the blue bloods. But when I was a young kid I loved when my parents took me to midnight madness. Waiting outside the gates with them and family friends waiting to get in and the anticipation was always exciting. And then they did away with it and had the Black and Gold Blowout for a few years. It was at least a chance to see the team before the season started and it was always a cool experience for the kids to get their cards and posters autographed by the players afterwards. I wish one of those two or something along the lines of those events would resurface. Sadly it doesn't seem likely. But I always thought those were good events for the fanbases. Don't know the reasons for not having them, but miss those events.

When you are bad for a long period of time you get a large group of people that know nothing but a bad product. You basically lose a partial generation of fans, the never had a good product to like so the naturally gravitated to something else.

The 8pm+ start times are a big negative also. Likely hurts season ticket sales. They schedule crap teams in non conference and have a few late tips all of a sudden people are thinking “well I am not driving there for those 6-8 games so why buy season tickets”.

They looked like shit out of the gates last year and people said the same thing. Ill give them a game but we should be concerned.

Same players (except for Joe W.), same coaches--what are the odds they'll get different results?

ONE WHOLE GAME??? How awesome of you!

Wow...don't get into coaching or let your kids play sports. You will become high depressed. Look around the country and understand basketball is a much different creator than it was even 5-8 years ago.

Numerous teams lost "buy games" already that where big time favorites. The Hawks appreciate your patience and would like to know what is the number they should win by to satisfy "your" personal performance scale.

Jesus dude. You really cannot put message board chatter into context. It really isnt as dire as you read it.

But you are concerned??...others want Fran fired because of the performance the other night.

I 100% know it is not dire. Win or lose it does not affect my life in the slightest.

Yah im concerned as in i dont want the hawkeyes to suck ass another year. Did you watch the game? We looked slower than molasses. No one can create off the drive consistently.

Not trying to be a jerk ...but Fran does not coach that way. If it gets into a half court possession they will run offense. Fran is recognized as one of the better half court and out of bounds coaches in the country. You might want to see the NBA type dribble breakdown...but you will not see that in the Iowa system. I myself would much rather have a good team offense.

What is this half court offense you speak of??

I've become pretty jaded with Iowa sports. Both football and basketball.

Just really average to mediocre product - pretty much know what we're gonna get out both Fran and Kirk and nothing to really get too excited about, unless you're into NIT and Pinstripe bowl appearances. Best case is typically 2nd round blowout Ncaa tournament loss or outback bowl blowout.

It wouldn't take a whole lot to bring me back, but I'm definitely in "prove it to me" mode.

Iowa hoops has been uninspiring since Tom Davis was let go (at least) and the 2010's have been pretty forgettable on the gridiron, save for maybe 2015.

So yeah, not a lot of interest in posting much these days.

As a point of reference, Iowa fans were nuts during the last few years when Lute was coach. I remember lots of discussions about why Carver wasn't going to seat more like 20k, because fans were incredibly excited. The noise level in the fieldhouse was like going to a loud rock concert. No, dinosaurs had gone extinct before then.
In fact they split tickets so more people could come to the games, I think it was the Raveling years...

The Nature Boy was a 16 time yes SIXTEEN TIME WWE champion. I just want to see Iowa compete in a 2nd round NCAA game.

I left Iowa City after Lute's last year. Iowa seemed to be in a position to be a regular top 20 team, so I was very surprised at how poorly they played the next year. If you win, the fans will come, but the competition is incredibly tough, especially if you don't have a prime recruiting base and don't cheat at least a little...

The women may put up 120....

No Thanks.

I have had season tickets but this is my last year as I am tired of angry Fran and his equally discussing wife.

With the buzz around here today, wanted to bump this. Winning and March situations sure help with interest. Now sell beer at Carver and we're on to something going forward.
Yes beer would change the atmosphere dramatically I think. Why the hell not? They serve it(and other alcohol drinks) to the VIP's before games in their private lounges, right? Same at Kinnick. Why do VIP's only get it?

I would even offer up free softserve with seat delivery for anyone in the top 4 or 2?? rows. Show your ticket and get a free softserve without waiting in line. That would add value that it appears many who miss half the game waiting in line have proven many fans at Carver want.
