Is it really stand your ground when you put the second shot in his head?

Kid went to the wrong address to pick up his sibling. Man answered the door and shot him in the head. Then stood over him and fired again. Cops let him go.

Kansas City is a blue town. They legalized drugs in Missouri, so there's that...
Yeah but it was in a red neighborhood. They answer the door with a bullet. Just standing his ground. If he wasn’t a drug zombie he wouldn’t have went to the address. Dam blue towns suck

“Stand your ground” was piss poor law when written and debated before it was ever passed into law. LEOs across the nation warned the politicians they were headed down the wrong road with this one. Yet, “we the people” knew best and disregarded those with experience in the law and made this POS legislation the law. Sometimes “we the people” and our politicians are arrogant...way beyond our own good.
Then for good measure, “we the people” elect GOPers to run our state....in another vain attempt to make our voting public look more intelligent than it really is.

You got a pretty head, joel. Stay strong, brother.

I'm just LOLing at a poster who's point is that a red state = a hate crime shooting. I'm sure he'd make a great lawyer...
You seriously don't think this crime fits the stereotype about some old white man shooting a young Black kid in some redneck neighborhood?

A guy answering the front door with gun in hand?

Lift your head out of the sand before you suffocate.
Kansas City might very well be a "Blue" city, but that's like saying you won't find MAGA in Iowa City.

When I took my CC permit class, the instructor (retired cop) ran through different scenarios and anecdotes about the use of force. You wouldn't believe how many people in the class thought it was justified to shoot any stranger in your home on sight, or to shoot people writhing on the ground in the head, or to shoot at people who are running away from you. The instructor set them straight, thankfully. It's crazy that a lot of people genuinely think the law says these actions are OK (but it doesn't, of course).

Mass confusion and misunderstanding of the law in this area are a HUGE part of the problem. This is the main reason why I think permitless carry is dangerous, since the low temperature IQ crowd really needs these classes so they aren't a danger to the public.

Another illustration of the problem is on the other side of the argument, how this thread and the article are conflating "the castle doctrine" (no duty to retreat in the home) with "stand your ground" (no duty to retreat outside the home). Heck, there's even a link in the article to separate article by the Gifford's Center that explains the distinction between the two.

Castle doctrine wouldn't apply. The child wasn't in his house, I assume wasn't attempting to enter the house, and has every right to be on his doorstep. Of course, stand your ground doesn't apply unless the asshat shooter somehow assumed a black child looking for his sibling constituted an immediate threat. I can't imagine what it might be that created that impression.

For this guy to be walking around free is reprehensible.

I agree, and agree. IMO the article would have been better off discussing the castle doctrine and its limitations.

And for the record the shooter is scum and should doing life in prison. These stand your ground laws are ridiculous. You can't shoot an unarmed person knocking on your door. Door to door salesman have some stones in KC.

Yup. That’s what should all do: Opine about what we THINK the facts were about a possible crime.

"Where the man might be in trouble is that there was no threat when he shot the boy a second time."

Where was the threat the FIRST time? Did the kid ring his doorbell at 2am while wearing a mask?

If you are worried about someone knocking on your door at that late at night, don't answer the door. Shout through the door that you want them to go away.

I might look through the window on the door or look out of a window of our house at the door.

Not opening up a door at 2 am if I don't know who it is.

To be fair, that depends on the home layout - not everyone can easily do that and see who is at the door.

I agree, although I think at the very least if I couldn't do that I would want to get a door that at least has a peep hole.

But opening up the door at 2 am to any person who happens to knock at your door seems like you are begging to be the victim of a crime.

SYG, Castle defenses need to be written/interpreted much more strictly than they currently are in most states.
