Is it really stand your ground when you put the second shot in his head?

So in addition to common sense laws about how young people can be to have registered hand guns and assault rifles, we need to look at competency tests after a certain age. This 84 year old probably is not sure what month it is right now.
Is he still wearing his bib from dinner?

This is one of the things I've said for years. We need to treat guns like we treat cars. Be licensed to have one, and the older you get, the more often you have to go in and have a vision test, or pass a user test.

Oh, FSU's own Benjamin Crump is on the ground and representing the family. That doesn't seem like a positive development. I wonder why he's there? This doesn't seem like the kind of ATM cases he prefers.

As a KC resident this is just terrible. First the shooting. He’s going to jail for whatever life he has left. The fact he unloaded a 2nd shot and just left him there is insane. Then the kid was able to get up after 2 shots, one in the head and go to 3 other houses and all these pieces of shit wouldn’t even help him. It’s amazing he’s alive. The neighbors should be charged as well with something. So glad the kid is going to make it. **** that entire neighborhood.

We've got another one. A woman was shot in upstate New York after she and some friends mistakenly pulled into the wrong driveway while looking for a friend's house. A man fired two shots, one of which killed 20 year old Kailyn Gillis.
WTF is wrong with people?

You know a few weeks ago I was in an unfamiliar neighborhood and pulled into a driveway to back up and go the other way. Not far from where this happened. I’ll admit anymore it’s probably just dumb to do. Way to many crazies out there.

What perplexes me is in this day and age with anyone being able to drive for Doordash or Uber, plenty of people get lost and go to wrong addresses.

It’s coming out now that the White racist thought the kid was a burglar even though the kid parked in the driveway and rang the doorbell

Seriously, I would love one of these families to sue Fox News as an accomplice to some of these actions. We all know people who have been manipulated into dangerous thinking by their misinformation.

This whole stand your ground thing isn't working out quite as expected. So surprising. This kid obviously had a very bright future ahead of him. This is another reason I'm glad Dominion isn't settling w/Fox. Not that it really matters, as they'll just make a payment and move on. WTF is wrong w/people.

Ya, but who is going to follow-up on these things? Let's say this guy purchases a gun in his 30s and never commits a crime. Who's going to come to his house 50 years later to see if he's still competent enough to still use it?

Has a bright future, he's at home recovering. At least they finally charged the guy with something.

In his statement to police, 85 year old Lester said he "had just laid down in bed when he heard the doorbell ring," according to the probable cause statement.

Lester told police he picked up his gun, a .32 Smith & Wesson 1888 revolver, and went to the front door, which consists of an interior main door and exterior glass storm door, both of which were locked, the statement reads.

"Lester stated he opened the interior door, and saw a black male approximately 6 feet tall pulling on the exterior storm door handle. He stated he believed someone was attempting to break into the house and shot twice within a few seconds of opening the door," the statement reads.

Lester told police he had never seen the man before and that "no words were exchanged during the incident and the male had not said anything prior to pulling on the door handle," according to the probable cause statement.

The suspect told police "it was the last thing he wanted to do, but he was 'scared to death' due to the male's size," his own age, and his "inability to defend himself," the statement reads.

Must be a Tennessee thing for a burglar to ring the doorbell before breaking in

Kid went to the wrong address to pick up his sibling. Man answered the door and shot him in the head. Then stood over him and fired again. Cops let him go.

Ummmm, there is a lot missing from the story. What happened that resulted in the kid being shot in the first place? You can’t just shoot a person because they knock on your door. That doesn’t pass a stand your ground defense. Was there a threat that took place? Is it accurate the kid was there to pick up his sister? I realize the kid was shot a second time, but this is where journalism fails. What happened that the guy shot him? Why is that not in here?

Actually I've seen this tactic used many times, the perp rings the doorbell to see if anyone is at home. If they answer quickly the perp gives some story they must be at the wrong house. If nobody answers they proceed to break in.

It's not unusual for a break in artist to ring the doorbell

Why isn’t that in the article? I’m sorry…. Being a white male, when I knock on a person’s door even during the day, I am always standing a good 6 feet or more from the door and many times down the front steps and on the sidewalk as to not frighten the person. Not justifying the shooting at all, but the kid clearly made a bad decision to knock on a door at 2:00 am where the house was likely dark and not take into consideration that he could scare someone and should back away from the door.

The OP's story was from a very liberal news site which is known for omitting facts.

I agree with you that it's not a smart move attempting to open someones door in the middle of the night

For ****s sake it wasn’t at 2am. Quit trying to justify this you morons. The crazy scared old coot shot him through the door and then put a 2nd bullet in him and left him out there to die. Didn’t call 911, didn’t do anything.
