He is NOT the same person he was in 2015-2016. He has since withheld military aid to an ally in order to extort them to provide political favors, he has tried to overturn a free and fair election, and he has pardoned people who assaulted police in an attempt to overturn that election.
More importantly, he is severely psychologically damaged from losing in 2020; an experience from which a narcissist cannot recover. In his first administration he tried to play the game by surrounding himself with experienced and serious politicians. But he is so psychologically damaged, and so aggrieved, he now (predictably) has surrounded himself with nothing but crazed sycophants, and is administration his completely off the rails.
Anyone who can read his words, watch his actions, and shrug it off as no big deal is either delusional or just a terrible American.
I believe the indirect assignment of electors was, in their minds, the guardrail against the people choosing someone wholly unfit. Those electors would theoretically cast their votes for someone more suitable. But in today's world that is not going to happen.
