Ohio State lost one game, in a monsoon, when Elliott spent a few days during the week in the hospital for an illness. It's not like Ohio State lost 4-5 games last year. I still think they were one of the best, if not the best, teams in the country.
Winning a championship is very difficult. Repeating is brutal. Every player on that team mentioned after the loss to MSU that they could finally play loose and just play football. They dominated very good Michigan and Notre Dame teams after that loss. Urban is a very good coach and an excellent recruiter.

What's Urban's record at Ohio St? He's still a good coach. Like Im4Iowa said, he lost one game this season.
You forgot to mention that MSU was without their starting and 1st team all B1G QB. And they played @ The Shoe.

He is 28-2 over the last 2 years with those players. Overrated nah.
This. That game they lost last year was fluky. Neither team could move the ball in those conditions and it just came down to the one botched punt return back in OSU's own territory. I could've easily seen them winning it all again this year if they were selected for the playoff. His career record at OSU is insane. 50-4 overall and 31-1 in the conference. I'd say that sounds like a good coach. That being said I think he should've stuck with Cardale at QB rather than Barrett.
I was kidding somewhat- of course he's a very good coach. Iowa fans would go nuts if Kirk lost a game with that type of talent - maybe Iowa fans have higher expectations.
It will be interesting if "health / family" issues arise for urban as Jimmy and the maize and blue keep improving. Maybe a year off and Big 12 / Texas?
Oh and you are right - he certainly is no Ferentz. You can have your wins if that makes your life better / more fulfilling. Im ok with Iowa / Kirk.

Nah if you had had higher expectations you would not have kept and overpaid your underwhelming coach for so long. Average seems to be ok with you guys. Keep wishing and hoping Urban leaves tOSU. I know many other B1G fans do as well.
Had Noah Spence(transferred to Eastern Kentucky), stayed away from drugs...OSU might have had another first round pick to their credit...Think he is expected to be drafted early today?
That was also the game Elliott and Meyer kinda through the OC(Warriner) under the bus for a terrible gameplan/playcalling...
Urban is a good coach. And generally a great recruiter, or at least has been for periods of time during each of his college stops. He's proven he can go win when he has a better roster than the opponent. Nothing wrong with that, in college you recruit so that you have more talent than the other guy. He's been at places (Florida and Ohio State) where a coach can do that.
He basically turned tail and ran at Florida when it became evident that he was being out-recruited by his SEC brethren. The health/family issues miraculously disappear after 1 year away doing TV when the OSU job opened up. More power to him, he got to reset at one of the 3-4 best jobs in the country instead of going 6-6 for a few years at Florida. I'm sure we'll hear more this year when OSU is 9-1 or 10-0 about how much adversity Urban has led the Buckeyes through.

Is OP serious? tOSU has lost 4 games in the last 4 seasons. 2 of those seasons they went undefeated and won a National Championship.
This. As a huge Iowa fan and alum, I can't believe Im doing this but Im going to defend Urban.
He has won everywhere he has coached. You can't fault a coach for having a talented roster to work with. He played a major part in developing that roster. He didn't have the name brand or talent-filled roster at BG or Utah, yet managed to win. I really think his best coaching job was the year he took over OSU and went 12-0 with a team surrounded by turmoil and not eligible for the post season.
I always read about his health issues and people make jokes about it and just assume that when things started to go south, he created some sort of illness, but how do we know he really wasnt having health issues? Stress and anxiety is real and over time, it can cause a lot of problems and issues. I have some co-workers who know Urban really well and they have told me that after the titles, everything just got bottled up inside and winning was no longer good enough. You had to dominate. Based on everything they told me, I believe his health problems were real. The whole "I want to spend more time with my family" statement was easier than saying "Im having some major health issues and the stress and anxiety has finally kicked my butt."
Sure, it's easier to get talent to come to Florida and OSU versus Iowa or Northwestern, but he still had to manage that talent and push the right buttons. Not always easy to do...just ask Michigan.
Why in the hell do we have a thread about this? OSU is an ass-kicking titan of college football, with a tremendous coach (and recruiter) who beats us like a rag doll every time we play them. And we're going to attempt to talk trash about them???
Good recruiter. Has access to lots of athletes bein in Columbus (big city) or just Ohio alone. Easier draw. No "special system" just basic HS Zone read. A productive Don't make players have to think much on the field. Unfortunately this can be a bad thing. Lets athletes make plays, but sometimes costly mistakes off field too. I always wonder what if his guys were coached w Ferentz "team 1st concept & discipline". I think they'd be consistent & constant champs. Meyer ain't no Saban or Ferentz. Great coaches develop great teams, a belief & young men. IMO Meyers kids aren't as NFL ready either.
One of the more reasonable assessments of Meyer's health issues. While it fits into the narrative of the haters for him to be somehow scared of competition, it's the farthest thing from the truth. What is real is that he allowed the emotions and stress that came with his position to get to him. Ask any middle aged person who experiences angina (chest pains) for the first time and ask them what they thought.
I think him coming back to coaching after only one year was a result of a couple of things- both of which he admitted. His job at ESPN allowed him to meet other head coaches and learn how they created some work/life balance and dealt with the stress of the job. And secondly, the OSU job opened up.
Yeah the NFL has caught on to the fact that Urbans players just are not ready for the NFL. That is why you won't see many of them drafted highly........oh wait! Thanks for the laugh.

also took a bgsu team that was 2-9 and went 8-3 & 9-3 his 2 years there
OSU has so many advantages in so many areas that the average coach will look like a superstar there. All the coach really has to do is stay out of trouble and pick from the many players who have OSU number one on their list. They may have to beat Michigan 2 out of 3 times.
"Urbans players"?? The question was, is he an over rated coach? Are you saying UM made these kids pro prospects? That's like saying a 5* 6'6" 280 HS school kid will get a college shot because of his coach. He, like freeze & Saban etc. GET ( somehow, as were learning @ ole miss) top tier athletes. Weight training & a couple years in a good league makes em prospects. Urban Meyers job is nothing like ferentz or dantonio who actually have to develop & coach players. Don't be an idiot. Urban is a recruiter. HIs better athletes won a lot of games. He's over rated AS A COACH!!
