Weirdly I'm doing much better than a year ago. Christmas break didn't recharge me at all. Granted, I had just come out of having a kidney stone and was exhausted for weeks.

"To ensure that no one remains stressed at work, we have made the difficult decision to part ways with employees who indicated significant stress." - sent to employees in an internal email!

Man, that's incredibly cold-blooded!

It reminds me of this, which I used to think was a joke, but now...

I know I'm a grumpy old man but work place stress today compared to 20 years ago is a joke. People working from home, coming and going as they please. Sitting on the internet half the time they actually are at work. It's a joke, the wife and I joke about it all the time and we work in completely different industries but it's the same at both of our work places. A few of us at work that have been around a long time talk about it all the time.

The lack of commitment and talent at the younger levels is stressful to work around.

Sometimes I day dream about some old-timey-modern-factory-job where I just go in and do my task, get paid well, get a pension, healthcare, and I don't constantly have to do continuing education because computer security is just non-stop evolving while constantly watching over my shoulders for the next attack. On top of being able to be reached 24/7 to answer questions.

You know what, fight bar!

That's awesome, a co-worker and me joke about the guys that come mow the lawn and how that would be my dream job coming into retirement. Bet they are not thinking about the bottom line or financial forecasts!

I miss the good old days when it was three-martini lunches, working a straight 9-5 schedule, a secretary you could call "doll" and have sex with, and wages were enough so only one parent had to work and you could still afford a house, a car, a refrigerator, and a new console TV.

So much truth in this. My boomer parents will meet you in fight bar to show you how wrong you are whipper snapper!

I'm a grumpy old man too. But 20 years ago when I left the office that was it. No one called, texted, emailed me all hours of the day and expected me to answer/help out.

Hell almost every person on our management team wife's don't work. Driving around in their $70k suv's and shopping at Target every day. Just no sleeping with co-workers these days is the only difference there.

I think that's the secret thing - that's all of our dreams! We work at jobs because of the money, not because of any intrinsic crap. If only menial and/or really fulfilling labor paid enough to make it work!

I've often thought that the moment I know longer need to make enough to pay for the kid's college/life and everything else, I could just quit and go be a bartender at some small bar in Key West or Myrtle Beach or somewhere - I wouldn't have to worry about anything, just being happy and stress-free.

Hell at my wife's job she can't find people at 2 on a Tuesday to answer a question let alone after 5. I used to get those calls but put an end to that too.

Some days I think about becoming a mail man. Just drive around in the mornings stuffing boxes? No one calling or emailing me. No deadlines other than put today's mail in the box. Just put on some tunes and go for a ride.

I don't know where you live, or the work you do, etc., so I don't want to incorrectly make any assumptions - maybe it's just different. The people I work with (public accounting/tax/consulting firm), I don't think I know anyone where only one person in the family works. Even partners that are making >$500k/yr per year are still married to other people who are out making a bunch of money. And they use that combined buying power for big homes, vacation homes, fancy cabins, etc.

I know right, I was made to be a sales ad rep in the 60's!!!
The first job interview I had out of college, the office was right out of a John Grisham novel - dark wood offices with leather furniture, and people openly smoking at their desks. And this was 1997. I couldn't believe this place. I didn't end up working there - but I got the feeling the entire "office culture" was still very much the 1960s.

Just checking the spelling on that. It is "Morale" not "Moral" right?

Live in Eastern Iowa and for a trucking company. It's all about priorities I guess. Most of the people I work with are putting all their extra money in retirement, outside of a nice house and nice cars to drive they are not concerned with 2nd homes and things like that. Vacations sure, but other then that it's pretty conservative.
